Moving a Windows user folder to another SSD can free space on the system drive, but the evidence here does not establish that the move made Windows faster. No Windows version, relocation method, workload, or before-and-after measurements are available for this reported experience, so it should be treated as an anecdote—not a repeatable performance result. Microsoft also warns that moving a complete profile can create app-compatibility and servicing problems.
What the reported difference does—and does not—show
The reported experience is that moving a Windows user folder to a second SSD made a surprising difference. Without the Windows build, the profile paths moved, the SSD models and connections, the relocation method, and measurements from a defined workload, it is not possible to identify what changed or attribute a performance improvement to the move.

Several factors could matter on an individual PC, including how full the system drive was and which files or applications were involved. Those are possible explanations, not established causes in this case. Microsoft lists reducing demand on the system drive and arranging storage as reasons people may consider relocation; it does not say that moving a profile to another SSD generally improves responsiveness.

Moving a complete profile carries Windows support risks
Microsoft recommends keeping user profile folders and ProgramData in their default locations unless a supported, validated deployment scenario specifically requires relocation. Its guidance applies to Windows Client and Windows Server and warns that moving these folders can cause updates, hotfixes, service packs, or in-place upgrades to fail or behave unreliably. Support can vary by Windows version, folder location, and update deployment method. Microsoft’s Windows servicing guidance describes these caveats.

There is a separate app risk on Windows Client: Microsoft says Microsoft Store apps are not supported or expected to work if the Users directory, an individual profile, or ProgramData has been moved from its default location. It specifically advises against changing the default location of C:Users or an individual profile. The relocation methods linked from that support article are provided as-is and intended for test environments. See Microsoft’s Store app support guidance.
Choose the storage change that matches your goal
| Approach | What changes | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Move the complete profile | Relocates an individual profile or the broader Users directory, depending on scope. | Microsoft documents servicing risks and warns that Store apps are not supported or expected to work after these paths are moved from their defaults. |
| Redirect selected known folders | Points particular known folders to a local folder or a file share. | This is not the same as relocating every profile folder. Check that the folders and configuration fit your Windows and application needs. |
Microsoft documents Folder Redirection for directing known folders to a local path or file share, and describes roaming profiles as a way to carry settings between computers. These are managed Windows features, not assurances that any profile subfolder can safely be moved. Microsoft’s overview of Folder Redirection and roaming user profiles explains the distinction.

If you are considering a move, weigh the risks first
- If the goal is more room on C: consider moving selected personal-data folders using a supported Windows feature rather than relocating the whole profile. Verify which folders your setup supports.
- If the goal is better performance: do not assume a second SSD will make Windows or apps faster. The available account gives no controlled measurements or configuration details to support that conclusion.
- If a full relocation is required for a managed deployment: confirm that the exact Windows version, destination paths, and servicing method are supported for that scenario, and plan for updates and app compatibility.
- Before changing paths: make a recoverable backup and establish how you would restore the original profile location if Windows servicing or apps fail. The reported account does not identify a relocation procedure that can be recommended.
What would make this result reproducible
A useful before-and-after account would specify the Windows version and build; whether the change moved C:Users, one profile, or selected folders; the relocation method; both SSDs’ models and connections; and whether either drive was close to full. It would also name a consistent workload and metric, report repeated runs before and after, and explain what else changed between tests. Without those details, the observation may be real for that PC, but it cannot show that profile relocation caused the difference or predict the result on another computer.
