I Made Windows 11 Feel Faster Without Upgrading a Single Thing

Windows 11 may feel more responsive after targeted changes to startup apps, storage, visual effects, or power mode. Start by identifying the bottleneck, and know where these fixes have limits.

You can make Windows 11 feel more responsive without buying new hardware, but the right fix depends on what is slowing it down. Check Task Manager first, then target the likely cause: startup apps, low storage, visual effects, or power settings. These changes can reduce software load; they cannot remove a hardware limit, and Microsoft says older PCs may not improve significantly.

Start by finding what is slowing the PC

Before changing settings, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes tab, look for apps using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources; the Performance tab gives a broader view of current activity. Microsoft’s performance guidance identifies low storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and older hardware among possible causes.

Close an app only if you recognize it and are not using it. If a resource remains heavily used, investigate the app or activity behind it rather than repeatedly ending unfamiliar processes. A single busy moment is not necessarily a persistent problem.

Reduce apps that launch and run in the background

Apps that start automatically can delay sign-in and keep using resources afterward. Review the list and disable only items you do not need immediately when Windows starts. Microsoft documents two ways to manage them in its startup apps guidance:

Dell Windows 11 Desktop Computer OptiPlex 5060 | Intel Core i5-8500 Six Core (4.3GHz Turbo) | 16GB DDR4 RAM | 500GB SSD Solid State + 1TB HDD | WiFi + Bluetooth | Home or Office PC (Renewed)
  • Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
  • Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
  • Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
  • Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
  • Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off nonessential apps.
  2. Or open Task Manager > Startup apps, select an item, and disable it.

Keep security tools, accessibility components, device utilities, and apps you rely on immediately after sign-in. Disabling startup launch does not necessarily uninstall an app; you can open it yourself when needed.

For apps that offer it, you can also limit background activity in that app’s settings. The background-permissions control is not available for every app, so its absence does not mean something is wrong.

Free disk space if the system drive is nearly full

In File Explorer, open This PC and check the available space on the drive containing Windows. Low storage can be associated with sluggish performance and can interfere with installing updates. Windows provides two built-in ways to review cleanup options:

  • Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations presents categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps for review.
  • Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense can remove temporary files and, depending on its configuration, items in the Recycle Bin.

Inspect the selections before deleting anything. Removing a previous Windows installation can take away the option to roll back to the earlier version. Storage Sense does not remove files from Downloads or cloud files by default unless you configure it to do so. See Microsoft’s drive-space instructions and Storage Sense guidance.

If you are short on space, Microsoft also suggests connecting a USB drive or SD card and moving personal files to it. That can ease a storage shortage; external storage does not directly make the processor faster.

Try visual effects or power settings only if the tradeoff suits you

Visual effects

Windows visual effects use system resources. To favor responsiveness over appearance, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the matching Control Panel result, and select Adjust for best performance. This reduces visual polish, and it is an optional tradeoff rather than a guaranteed fix. You can restore a preferred appearance setting if you do not like the result. Microsoft explains this option in its Windows performance tips.

Power mode

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review the available power mode. Best performance prioritizes performance; Balanced or Best power efficiency may be more suitable for everyday use or running unplugged. Best performance can use more power, make a laptop run warmer, and drain its battery faster. Which choices appear can depend on the device and its configuration. See Microsoft’s power mode instructions.

Let Windows handle drive optimization in most cases

Windows generally optimizes drives automatically on a schedule. The operation differs by drive type: HDDs are defragmented, while SSDs are trimmed. You can inspect the schedule and status by searching for Defragment and Optimize Drives and opening the tool. Do not apply blanket manual-defragmentation advice to an SSD; Microsoft describes the distinction and automatic optimization in its drive optimization guidance.

Make one change at a time and judge the result

After changing a setting, use the PC normally and check whether the specific issue improves: sign-in delay, sluggishness when storage is low, or slow response during demanding work. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify what helped and to undo a change that did not suit you. These steps address software load, storage pressure, visual effects, and power behavior—not the limits of aging hardware. Microsoft’s performance guidance cautions: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.”
