I Let a Coding Agent Audit My NAS for Duplicate Files—and It Found 2TB I Was Backing Up Twice

A duplicate-file scan found 2TB in my NAS setup, but matching files alone do not prove a backup bill was charged twice. Here’s how to interpret the result and clean up cautiously.

A coding agent helped me audit my NAS for duplicate files, and the scan found 2TB of duplicate data in my setup. That is my experience, not an independently verified result or a typical savings estimate. A duplicate report can show matching files on the locations it scanned; by itself, it cannot prove a backup provider charged twice for the same content.

What the 2TB finding does—and does not—mean

The 2TB figure is a storage quantity from my audit, not a dollar amount. It describes files identified as duplicates under the scan’s rules; it does not establish that I reclaimed 2TB of billed cloud storage or reduced a bill by a particular amount.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Those are separate questions. A file-level scanner reports matches among the paths and file types it examined. Whether a backup service stores or bills for repeated content depends on that service’s deduplication, incremental-backup, retention, and billing behavior. The available evidence here does not identify my provider or verify an invoice reduction, so the headline’s cost implication should be read as my account of what I was backing up, not as a proven provider charge.

What a duplicate-file audit actually checks

A duplicate finder identifies files according to its matching method and configured scope. For example, rmlint documentation describes hash-based detection and an option for byte-by-byte comparison, as well as controls for output and which copy is treated as the original. Identical-file matching is not the same as finding similar photos, near-duplicate documents, or different versions of a file.

The result is only as broad as the scan. Shares excluded from the scan, file categories it did not include, size thresholds, and matching rules all affect what appears in the report. A coding agent can help configure or interpret a tool, but it cannot make an incomplete scan comprehensive or turn a match into proof of a billing outcome.

How NAS file scans differ from backup deduplication

A file-level scan and a backup system’s storage optimizations operate at different levels. Synology’s Storage Analyzer is one DSM example: its specification describes duplicate-file detection, CSV report export, and custom analysis criteria. Its default categories include archives, pictures, videos, audio, documents, web pages, disk images, and executable files. The specification lists a maximum of 5,000 duplicate files per report; check the current specification and your NAS support before relying on those features. Synology’s backup guidance describes Hyper Backup as supporting block-level incremental backup and cross-file deduplication, while Snapshot Replication replicates changed data blocks. Those are product-specific backup behaviors, not evidence that a separate duplicate-file audit will cut a cloud bill. Synology: How can I back up my Synology NAS?

Synology’s Active Backup for Business white paper describes destination-side inline deduplication and global deduplication across tasks in one shared folder. In that product context, it describes 4 KB chunks fingerprinted with SHA-256 and changed-block tracking for incremental backups. These details apply to that product and the white paper’s context; they should not be generalized to other NAS systems or backup services. How to review and clean up matches safely

  1. Document the scan scope. Record the NAS model and operating-system version, shared folders included or excluded, file categories and size thresholds, and whether the scanner used hashes or byte comparisons. Without this, the result is hard to reproduce or interpret.
  2. Make sure you have a current, restorable backup. Before a substantial reorganization or deletion, confirm that a backup exists and that you know how to restore it. The rmlint caution guidance recommends keeping backups current before major reorganization or deletion.
  3. Start with a report or dry run. Review representative groups of matches, including their paths, sizes, and timestamps. Choose the copy to keep based on your folder organization and any applications that depend on those locations. The rmlint guidance cautions that duplicate finders can produce false positives or more serious bugs.
  4. Make removal reversible at first. If practical, move candidates to a quarantine or holding folder rather than permanently deleting them. Any reflink or other space-saving option depends on the filesystem and should not be assumed to work across NAS devices or backup-and-restore workflows.
  5. Check the result. Confirm that expected applications still work and that your backup remains restorable. To make a cost claim, compare the provider’s own storage accounting and invoice before and after the cleanup, taking its retention and billing rules into account.

What would verify a backup-cost saving

A scan report can substantiate which files matched under particular rules. To support a claim that those matches led to lower backup costs, the record would also need to show the provider’s storage accounting or invoice and how it changed after cleanup. A useful audit record includes the scan scope, matching method, duplicate count and total bytes, the copies kept or removed, and the relevant provider accounting. Freed space on a NAS alone does not establish a lower charge.
