Is Obsidian’s graph view actually useful? I used to think the answer was no: the whole-vault graph looked like a hairball, more decorative than informative. The mistake was treating that view as the only graph. Obsidian also has a Local Graph, which focuses on the notes connected to the one you have open. That smaller scope makes it easier to inspect a note’s neighborhood without asking a map of the entire vault to explain it.
What Obsidian’s graph shows—and what it doesn’t
Obsidian’s Graph view visualizes relationships between notes in a vault. Each circle represents a note, and each line represents an internal link. That makes the graph a visual map of connections recorded in your notes, not an automatic analysis of what those notes mean.

A line tells you that one note links to another. It does not prove that their ideas are substantively related, that the connection is important, or that you have captured every relationship you intended. That distinction matters: the graph can help you inspect linking patterns, but you still decide what those patterns mean.

Those are different scopes, not competing versions of the same map. The global view can make a large vault feel crowded because it shows connections across the collection. Local Graph starts with your current note and limits the view to its connected notes. Obsidian documents both views and their controls in its Graph view help page.

Open Local Graph and adjust its depth
- Open the command palette and search for Open local graph, then run that command with the note you want to inspect active.
- In the Local Graph controls, adjust the depth. At each level, the graph includes notes connected to notes revealed at the preceding level. Increasing depth therefore expands the neighborhood beyond the active note’s immediate connections.
- Keep the depth narrow when you want to examine direct links; increase it when you want to follow connections farther out. If the display becomes hard to read, reduce the depth or narrow the visible notes with filters.
This is a practical way to ask a more specific question than “What does my entire vault look like?” For example: “What notes connect to this one, and what appears one step beyond them?”
Reduce clutter with filters and groups
Graph filters can narrow which nodes are visible. The documented options include search terms, tags, attachments, whether a file exists, and whether a note is an orphan. Excluded files are omitted from the graph. When a local view feels noisy, try filtering for a term or tag relevant to the note you are exploring, or exclude categories that are not useful for that inspection.

Groups let you color-code notes that match a search term. One possible workflow is to use a filter to focus the graph and a group to distinguish a category within the displayed notes. These controls help organize what you see; they do not add meaning to a link or explain why two notes are connected.
Use layout controls for readability, not interpretation
Display and force controls change how the graph is drawn. Center force, repel force, link force, and link distance affect placement and spacing, so they can make a view easier or harder to scan. They do not change which notes are linked. If two nodes move farther apart after a layout adjustment, that is a visual change—not evidence that their notes are less related.

That is why Local Graph changed my view of the feature. I had been judging a vault-wide overview as though it were meant to explain one note at a time. The local view is the better starting point when the question is about the note in front of you; the global view remains a broad picture of links across the vault.
