Apple’s first foldable iPhone arrives after Android foldables have already established the category. That makes the iPhone Duo an exception to the usual “Android copied Apple” complaint—not because there is evidence Apple copied a particular rival, but because Apple is entering territory Samsung introduced years earlier.
What Apple announced—and when
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, calling it its first foldable iPhone. The company says it has a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, and features for the foldable form in iOS 27. Those are Apple’s specifications and descriptions, not independently measured results. Apple announced that preorders would begin October 16, with availability from October 23, 2026; those dates are planned launch dates, not confirmation that the phone is already on sale.
Apple CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” That is Apple’s characterization of its product, rather than an independent assessment. Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement also names two accessories: the iPhone Duo Case for US$79 and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for US$129. Apple said both were expected to be orderable from October 16, 2026.
Samsung announced a foldable iPhone-like category first
Samsung announced Galaxy Fold on February 20, 2019, more than seven years before Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement. Samsung described a 7.3-inch folding main display alongside a cover display, with App Continuity between the two screens and Multi-Active Window for using up to three apps at once. Samsung later announced US availability in September 2019.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
That chronology is the basis for the title’s provocation: Apple is not the company that introduced the foldable-phone category. Samsung’s launch announcements document what it offered and when; they do not establish the devices’ performance in independent testing. See Samsung’s Galaxy Fold announcement and its September 2019 availability announcement.
“The exception” is about the direction of the timeline, not proven copying
The familiar accusation that Android brands copy Apple usually imagines Apple setting a direction that Android manufacturers follow. With foldables, the broad sequence is reversed: Samsung announced and released a foldable phone years before Apple announced one. That makes the iPhone Duo a pointed exception to the complaint.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
But chronology is not proof of copying. The available announcements do not show that Apple copied a particular Samsung feature, Microsoft Surface Duo, or another Android device; nor do they establish design lineage or Apple’s intent. It is fair to say Android foldables preceded Apple’s announced foldable. It is not supported to turn that into a factual claim that Apple copied a named product.
What the launch announcements let us compare
| Point of comparison | iPhone Duo (Apple announcement, 2026) | Galaxy Fold (Samsung announcements, 2019) |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Announced September 9, 2026; preorders announced for October 16 and availability for October 23, 2026. | Announced February 20, 2019; US availability announced for September 2019. |
| Display layout | Apple reports a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. | Samsung reported a 7.3-inch folding main display and a cover display; the cited announcement does not state the cover display’s size. |
| Multitasking and continuity | Apple describes foldable-specific iOS 27 features; the announcement does not specify a maximum number of simultaneously active apps. | Samsung announced App Continuity between displays and Multi-Active Window for up to three simultaneous apps. |
| Launch price | Not stated in Apple’s cited announcement. | Not stated in Samsung’s cited announcements. |
| Accessories | Apple announced the iPhone Duo Case at US$79 and iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at US$129, both expected to be orderable October 16, 2026. | Not stated in the cited Samsung announcements. |
The platforms’ maturity and app support are meaningful comparison points, but these launch materials do not provide enough evidence to rate them. A display measurement or announced feature list also cannot settle real-world usability. The cited announcements do not support a verdict on durability, crease visibility, battery life, performance, or which phone is better to use.

What Apple has said about Pencil support
Apple says iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later in 2026. That is a stated future capability, not confirmation that every Apple Pencil model or configuration will work. It may matter to someone considering note-taking or markup on a larger foldable screen, but the announcement does not establish how the experience compares with other devices.
