In go-tool-base (GTB), a package that “wants to leave” is one that could be useful outside the framework as a standalone module. Matt Cockayne scored 27 packages on whether they should be extracted, their value beyond GTB, their code quality and how easy they would be to decouple. His central finding: a package can be worth extracting without being ready to extract.
What the scorecard measures
Cockayne’s 2026 exercise assigned four scores to each of 27 packages, for 108 numbers in total. Three criteria concern whether a package would make a desirable standalone module; the fourth estimates the work needed to remove framework-specific coupling.

- Extraction recommendation: how strongly the author recommends extracting the package.
- Standalone value: how useful the package could be outside GTB.
- Code quality: the author’s assessment of the package’s code.
- Ease of decoupling: how readily framework-specific dependencies could be removed.
The source does not define a scoring rubric or say the scores were independently reviewed. Treat them as the author’s project-specific judgments, not standardized measurements.

The source reports these scores from Cockayne’s 2026 assessment; it does not specify the scale’s endpoints. The numbers are best read comparatively within that exercise.

Chat: valuable, but entangled
Chat scored 10 for standalone value and 9 for extraction, yet only 4 for ease. Cockayne says it offered a common interface to multiple AI providers, but depended on GTB props, HTTP helpers, configuration and credential abstractions, and the logger. Its potential usefulness beyond GTB did not make it straightforward to separate.
Redact and regexutil: easier candidates
Redact scored 9 for extraction, 9 for value and 10 for ease. Regexutil scored 8, 8 and 10 on those same criteria. Their high ease scores set them apart from chat, while their value scores were lower than chat’s. The comparison makes the key distinction visible: “should this leave?” and “how hard would leaving be?” are different questions.

Telemetry: neither extreme
Telemetry received 6 for extraction, 7 for value, 6 for quality and 4 for ease. In this scorecard it sits between the strongest extraction recommendations and a package with a clearer decoupling path.

Cockayne proposed starting with lower-coupling utilities and moving toward more interconnected components, leaving chat until last. The sequence was intended to let earlier extractions reduce coupling and make later work easier. Packages scoring five or below were excluded from consideration.

- CLI helpers: output, forms, logger and changelog.
- Security and runtime foundations: credentials, authn and tls.
- Controls and optional adapters: controls, followed by optional HTTP and gRPC adapters.
- VCS, release and provider adapters: these came later in the proposed sequence.
- Chat: last, reflecting its low ease score and dependencies across GTB.
This is the author’s proposed ordering, not evidence that the same sequence is optimal for other frameworks.
The retrospective weak point: ease was not a reliable forecast
Cockayne’s experience complicated the scorecard’s apparent clarity. Logger scored 10 for ease but was deleted; forms also scored 10 for ease but remained in GTB. In both cases, the high ease estimate did not translate into the expected extraction. He identifies these outcomes as a surprising failure in his ease estimates.

That caveat matters when using a scorecard to plan architecture work. A rating can help surface candidates and dependencies, but it cannot by itself predict project decisions or outcomes. The contrast between planned ease and what happened makes the scores useful as a starting point for discussion—not a promise that a package will leave.
What this exercise can—and cannot—tell you
The assessment is a first-person retrospective on GTB. It gives a concrete way to distinguish extraction desirability from decoupling effort, and the four examples show why collapsing those questions into one score would hide important differences. It does not establish that the ratings are objective, that the proposed order is generally best, or that another project would get the same results.

For a team considering package boundaries, the most useful takeaway is the separation of concerns: assess a component’s value outside its current home independently from the work required to remove its dependencies. Then revisit those estimates against what actually happens, as Cockayne did with logger and forms.
