Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstalling an MCP server means trusting software that can interact with an AI agent and, depending on its tools and configuration, access files, services, or credentials. Frisk is a static scanner designed to inspect MCP-related content for recognizable risk patterns without executing it. It can help with an initial review, but a clean scan is not proof that a server is safe.
Why MCP servers deserve a review before installation
MCP servers are software dependencies, not just descriptions attached to an AI assistant. Their advertised tools and implementation can shape what an agent is able to do. That makes it worth checking a server’s identity, permissions, tool descriptions, and behavior before granting access.

What Frisk says it scans
Frisk describes itself as a static, zero-execution scanner: it aims to inspect material without importing or running it. Its documented detection categories include suspicious code-execution patterns, secret access or exfiltration, destructive operations, prompt injection, MCP tool poisoning, and Unicode obfuscation. These are project-described checks, not independently validated detection results. Frisk on PyPI

- Passkey compatibility with Microsoft, Google, and Apple for a convenient and secure sign-in experience. Certified for Microsoft Entra ID for secure multifactor integration with Microsoft services.
The project documents ways to scan local files or folders, a Git repository URL, raw text, and an MCP client configuration. It also describes JSON and SARIF output, a GitHub Action, and content fingerprints intended to help detect changes after approval. Those options make it usable at different review points, from an initial local inspection to a check in a development workflow.
What it does not inspect
Frisk says it can skip remote HTTP/SSE server behavior, and package fetching and scanning are unsupported for some package references. If the scanner cannot fetch or inspect the relevant implementation, its result says nothing about that unseen content. A static inspection also cannot observe what a remote server does at runtime.

How to use a scan result
A scanner can identify patterns worth investigating; it cannot certify a dependency. The Frisk project puts it plainly: “Static analysis is a first line of defense, not a guarantee.” Pattern-based checks may miss unfamiliar or deliberately evasive behavior. A clean result therefore means only that the scanner did not find patterns it recognizes in the material it inspected. Frisk project documentation

Check the affected code or metadata, whether the behavior is necessary, and whether the package is the one you intended to install. A practical review before granting access
- Verify identity. Check the package or repository name and source before installing; a scanner cannot resolve whether a lookalike is the intended project for you.
- Inspect advertised tools. Review tool descriptions and schemas for unexpected actions or requests for broad access. OWASP’s MCP security guidance recommends inspecting tool descriptions and schemas as part of review. OWASP guidance
- Scan what is actually available. Use Frisk on local files, a repository, raw text, or client configuration as applicable. Be clear about whether the implementation, package contents, and remote behavior were actually in scope.
- Limit access. Apply least privilege and use narrowly scoped credentials. Do not give a server broader file, account, or service access than its task requires; OWASP also recommends least privilege and scoped credentials.
- Pin and recheck approved content. Where practical, pin tool definitions or other approved content and monitor for changes. Frisk documents content fingerprints for drift checks; a fingerprint can reveal a change, but does not tell you whether the change is malicious.
- Monitor deployments separately. In organizational environments, a local pre-install scan is not a substitute for finding unauthorized or exposed services. NSA guidance recommends regularly scanning networks for insecure or unauthorized MCP deployments, including unauthenticated or vulnerable instances. NSA guidance on MCP server security risks
What a scanner can—and cannot—settle
Frisk’s documented strength is that it offers a static review path across several kinds of MCP-related input and flags categories of risk the project recognizes. Its boundary matters just as much: static inspection does not establish runtime safety, and unsupported or unavailable content remains unexamined. The available sources do not establish Frisk’s detection accuracy, false-positive rate, or superiority over another scanner.
