A command can finish without proving that an eleven-year notes archive made it through intact. A readable export can still omit usable attachments, a migration can flatten notebook structure, and—at least in one reported Obsidian CLI case—an error appeared alongside a zero exit code. The specific CLI and three incidents in the headline are not identified here, so those examples should not be mistaken for the author’s confirmed failures. The practical test is whether the expected notes, files, and organization exist in the output and survive a sample restore.
What does “export succeeded” actually prove?
Usually, only that the command or app completed according to its own status signal. A zero exit code does not independently establish that every expected note, attachment, link, or organizational detail was exported. Nor does the existence of a file prove that it contains everything needed for a usable archive.

That distinction matters especially for a long-running archive: export, import, and migration are separate stages, and each can preserve a different subset of the original. The examples below document specific products and paths; they are not evidence that the unnamed CLI in the headline behaved the same way.
Three ways a notes export can look successful but fall short
1. The command reports success, but an error is in the output
One Obsidian forum user reported that obsidian move printed Error: ENOENT when the destination’s parent directory did not exist, while returning exit code 0. The report concerns Obsidian 1.12.4 on macOS; it is a single community report, not an official statement of a product-wide rule or proof that all current versions behave this way. The lesson is narrow but useful: inspect standard output and error output as well as the process status, then verify that the destination contains the expected result. Obsidian’s official CLI documentation also says the app must be running and describes how commands target a vault; those are setup requirements for Obsidian, not universal CLI rules.
2. The export is readable, but attachments are not usable files
Evernote says its PDF export includes note text and embedded images, but attachments such as PDFs and other files appear as symbolic images rather than being embedded as actual files. A PDF may therefore look like a complete, readable note while failing as an attachment archive. Evernote points users to HTML or ENEX when attachments should accompany the content. For a representative check, open a note that has a real attachment and confirm that the exported result contains an accessible file, not merely a visual placeholder or link that depends on the original service.

3. The notes arrive, but their organization changes
Content can survive a migration while its structure does not. Evernote says its import brings in notes, titles, and available attributes, but does not retain notebook structures. Evernote’s import documentation.

Apple’s ENEX import follows a different documented constraint: it converts notes individually, and attachments or features Apple Notes does not support are not imported. Apple’s ENEX import guidance. These are product-specific caveats, but they illustrate why “the notes are there” is not the same as “the archive is intact.”
Choose an export format for what you need to preserve
Evernote documents ENEX and HTML exports in its Mac and Windows desktop app; export is not available in Evernote Web. The app offers single-page HTML and multi-page HTML. Multi-page HTML includes an index and a resource folder; single-page HTML also includes a resource folder. Evernote describes ENEX and HTML as options for exporting notes, while its PDF guidance warns that attachments are not carried as actual files in the PDF.

How to check whether the export really worked
No cited source supplies a universal validation standard. A practical check is to compare the result with a known source and test the types of content most likely to be lost.
- Define the expected scope. Record which notebooks or notes should be included and, if available, their source counts. For Evernote, select notes or a notebook in the desktop app, then choose an export format; account for its documented 100-selected-note limit when exporting individual notes.
- Check both the process report and the files. Read the command’s output for errors even when its exit status is zero. Confirm the expected output files exist and are non-empty, and compare actual note counts with the source where a reliable count is available.
- Open representative notes. Include a plain text note, one with embedded images, one with attachments, and one that depends on links or metadata. Confirm that each item is usable in the exported format or destination app.
- Check organization and attributes. Compare notebook or folder structure and any attributes that matter to your workflow. Do not assume that preserved titles and note contents mean the original organization was retained.
- Test a restore or import before retiring the source. Import a copy into the intended destination and inspect the result there. For a migration, validate the destination—not just the export file.
What this means for a long-term archive
“Exported” is not a single guarantee. A process status describes the command’s report; a file describes what was written; an import describes what the destination accepted. For an archive you may need years later, check each layer separately and keep the original source until you have verified the exported files and, where relevant, a test import.
