A low-power mini PC can take over most everyday work from a gaming desktop, provided the work is office software, calls, browsing, and moderate photo editing. It stops being a safe swap once the job depends on a capable discrete GPU, such as high-end games, GPU-accelerated tools, or video editing above HD footage. The exact machine behind this title is not identified in the sources available here, so this article uses three reviewed mini PCs as reference points: the GEEKOM Mini IT15, the GMKtec M8, and the MSI Cubi NUC AI+ 3MG.
What a low-power mini PC handles well
TechRadar describes the GEEKOM Mini IT15 as suitable for replacing a desktop for office and administration work and for mid-level creative applications. For the GMKtec M8, TechRadar reports that office software, video calls, browsing, and general Photoshop and Lightroom work ran successfully on the configuration it tested, which uses an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 512 GB SSD. Tom’s Hardware describes the MSI Cubi NUC AI+ 3MG as an office workhorse with low power use.

The pattern across these reviews is consistent: the machines are built for the work that makes up most of a typical day rather than for the heaviest tasks a gaming PC can run.

What the power figures mean
“Low power” only means something once you attach a specific model, a load, and a measurement method. Notebookcheck’s review of the GEEKOM Mini IT15, which is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, reports the following for that unit:
#1 Best Overall
- 12th Intel Alder Lake N95 Processor – The GMKtec G3 S Mini PC is powered by the 12th Gen Intel N95 processor with 4 cores, 4 threads, 6MB cache and a burst frequency up to 3.4GHz. - Idle: 4 to 8 W
- Medium load: around 51 W
- Full load: just under 92 W
Notebookcheck’s wording on idle draw is: “In idle mode, the power consumption is only 4 to 8 watts, making it one of the more economical devices in its class.” The review describes the power limits as conservative. The review page presents itself as a 2025 review, and these numbers apply to that tested unit and its settings, not to every Mini IT15 configuration.
Two cautions follow. First, a processor’s TDP rating is not the same as the power a whole system draws at the wall, so do not use CPU specifications as a substitute for a measured system figure. Second, idle draw matters most for a work machine that stays on all day, while full-load draw matters only during sustained heavy work. None of the sources compares these mini PCs head-to-head with a gaming desktop, so this article does not put a percentage on the energy saving.
Which work tasks fit
The table below sets out what each reviewed machine was reported to handle. “Not stated” means the source did not report a result for that task.

If your daily work sits in the first four rows, a mini PC of this kind is a realistic candidate. If it sits in the last three, the table is a warning, not a formality.
Where the limits appear
Integrated graphics and gaming
Integrated graphics are the most common deciding limit. TechRadar cautions that the GEEKOM Mini IT15 is not the right choice for high-end gaming or GPU acceleration. If your gaming PC is also your only machine for play, a mini PC will not replace it for that purpose, and a switch makes sense only if games are a secondary use.
Video editing and external GPUs
The GMKtec M8 is the reviewed machine with a documented expansion route. TechRadar reports that video editing above HD footage may need an external GPU through OCuLink, and it notes that the M8 includes USB4 and dual 2.5G LAN. An external GPU is additional hardware and cost, so budget for it as part of the system rather than as an optional extra.

- Compact and efficient: The Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q mini desktop PC is a compact and efficient mini desktop PC with reliable performance, plenty of memory, and efficient storage.
- Stable Processor - 6th Gen Intel Core i3-6100T, delivering reliable processing power for a variety of tasks including office productivity, web browsing and multimedia consumption.
- AMPLE CAPACITY - 8GB DDR4 RAM provides ample memory for seamless multitasking, smooth performance and runs multiple applications at the same time; 256GB solid state drive offers fast boot times, quick data access, and enough storage space for essential files, documents and applications.
- FLEXIBLE EXPANSION - USB Type-A, DisplayPort, RJ-45, headphone/microphone combo jack, ensuring easy connection to peripherals and accessories.
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro - a powerful, secure, compatible and more manageable operating system that helps you better manage and protect your devices and data for greater productivity and security.
CPU-heavy rendering and encoding
Tom’s Hardware reports that the MSI Cubi trails its peers in CPU-heavy rendering and encoding. Anyone whose work includes export queues, transcoding, or long render jobs should test those specific tasks before committing, because a machine that is fine for office work can be slow for these.
Noise
TechRadar notes that the GEEKOM Mini IT15’s fan noise may bother people who want near-silent operation. If the computer will sit on your desk during calls or long writing sessions, check the noise figures in the review for the load you actually run, not only the headline specification.

GEEKOM Mini IT15
The strongest documented case here is power efficiency, with idle draw reported at 4 to 8 W. It is positioned for office, administration, and mid-level creative work, and it is explicitly not for high-end gaming. Its fan noise is the drawback most relevant to a desk-based work setup.

GMKtec M8
The M8 has the widest documented range of connections: USB4, dual 2.5G LAN, and an OCuLink route for an external GPU. It is the reviewed option to consider if you expect your needs to grow beyond office work, though the external GPU adds cost and bulk.
MSI Cubi NUC AI+ 3MG
The Cubi is described as a low-power office machine, with testing that includes wall-power measurement. Its documented weakness is CPU-heavy rendering and encoding, so it fits best where those tasks are rare.

- List every application you use in a normal week, and mark any that need a discrete GPU, GPU acceleration, or video work above HD.
- If any item is marked, confirm whether the mini PC you are considering handles it, using the reviews named above, or plan for an external GPU before going further.
- Measure your current gaming PC’s idle and typical-work power at the wall, if you can, so you have a baseline; then compare it with the reviewed figures for the specific mini PC configuration you are considering.
- Check the noise in the review for the load you will run, especially if the machine sits close to you.
- Confirm the ports and display outputs you need, including USB4, OCuLink, and the number of monitors.
- Price the complete system, including memory, storage, any external GPU, and peripherals, using current prices on the day you buy.
What the sources do not establish
Three limits matter for anyone making this decision. The reviews do not compare these mini PCs with a gaming desktop under identical conditions, so any claim about savings versus a gaming PC is an estimate you need to make from your own measurements. The pricing shown in the reviews is time-sensitive, and the sources do not establish a durable price, so use current prices rather than figures from the articles. Finally, the machine behind the title is not identified here, which means the performance and power figures above describe the reviewed units and settings, not the device the title refers to.
The useful question is therefore not whether a mini PC is better than a gaming PC in general. It is whether your own applications, graphics needs, and noise tolerance fit one of the reviewed machines, and that is something only your own workload list can answer.
