Keep your old authenticator and recovery methods available until you verify the new codes.
Which open-source authenticator is a good fit?
There is no universal best choice. Start with the devices you use, then compare how each app backs up tokens and lets you recover or export them. “Open source” is not, by itself, proof that a backup is safe: security also depends on implementation and how you protect your vault, exported files, and recovery material.

| App | Platforms and distinguishing features | Backup, sync, and export | Google Authenticator migration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ente Auth | Mobile, desktop, and web; supports offline use without an account, according to Ente. | Ente describes end-to-end encrypted cloud backups and sync, plus import and export. | Google Authenticator appears in Ente’s documented import sources; Ente notes that its list may be out of sync. Check the current instructions before migrating: Ente import guide. |
| 2FAS Auth | Mobile app with a browser extension that pairs with the phone. | 2FAS describes offline use and synchronization through export files, iCloud, or Google Drive. Each route has a different storage and trust profile; protect any exported file as a credential. | Confirm the current import options in the app before you begin. The product page describes export-file syncing but does not establish a specific Google Authenticator import workflow. |
| Aegis Authenticator | Android only. The project describes AES-256-GCM vault encryption and password or biometric unlocking. | Supports plaintext or encrypted export and user-chosen automatic backups. Treat plaintext exports as exposed credentials: protect them and delete temporary copies after validation. | The project describes Google Authenticator compatibility. Follow its current import and export guidance: Aegis project. |
Choose Ente if you want documented cross-platform access with encrypted sync; consider 2FAS if its mobile-connected browser extension suits your workflow and you are comfortable selecting a sync route; choose Aegis only if Android meets your needs and you want control over vault backups. These are feature-fit distinctions, not a ranking of security.
What to check before transferring codes
Make an account and recovery inventory
List the services that ask for authenticator codes. For each one, locate its recovery codes or other recovery method and follow that service’s instructions. If you can, confirm you can still access the account before changing its authenticator setup.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Confirm the destination can import your tokens
Export formats differ, and support can change. Read the destination app’s current import instructions before creating an export. Google Authenticator exports tokens as QR codes; when an export contains more than ten accounts, its QR export may be split across multiple codes. The 2FAuth migration guide explains the batch behavior and describes preloading, validation, and selectively recording imported accounts: 2FAuth migration guide.
Handle exports like credentials
A QR code, copied secret, or plaintext export can expose the codes needed to generate your second factor. Do not send it through chat or email, and avoid screenshots that may sync to a photo service. Store it only as long as needed and remove temporary copies after checking the import. These precautions matter even when the destination app encrypts its normal vault.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
How to switch without locking yourself out
- Prepare recovery access. Identify every account protected by an authenticator and locate its recovery method. Keep the old app available throughout the transfer.
- Read both apps’ current instructions. Check Google Authenticator’s export process and the receiving app’s supported import path. Do not assume an export from one app will work in another.
- Export and import the tokens. Scan each QR code or use the supported file workflow, following the apps’ prompts. If Google Authenticator presents multiple QR codes, import each one before proceeding.
- Validate account by account. Use the new app’s code to sign in or complete the service’s verification check. Record which accounts work; resolve failures while the old setup and recovery options remain available.
- Remove temporary transfer material. Once the new entries are confirmed, securely delete temporary QR images, files, or copied secrets. Retain recovery codes according to each service’s directions.
Do not remove the old app or disable its working setup merely because the import appears successful. A visible entry is not proof that its generated code will authenticate successfully.
Why backup design deserves attention
A 2023 USENIX Security Symposium study examined backup mechanisms in sampled authenticator apps and found variation, including serious implementation or cryptographic-use flaws in some mechanisms it tested. The findings apply to particular app versions and tested mechanisms; they are not a current security ranking of Ente, 2FAS, or Aegis.

The study’s table counted 7 QR-code mechanisms, 3 cloud-sync entries, 9 plaintext file-export entries, 5 encrypted file-export entries, 6 plaintext sharing entries, 7 encrypted sharing entries, 4 apps with Android backup, and 9 apps with no backup mechanism in the table’s categories. Those are counts within the study’s sample, not market-wide rates. It also reported 181.5M+ total installs across the apps sampled—a study-table figure, not a current install total for any app. See the USENIX Security Symposium study.
For your own choice, consider where backups are stored, whether they are encrypted, who can access the encryption key or account, whether exports are portable, and how you would recover access if a device is lost. Vendor pages describe product features; the historical study does not establish how current versions perform.
