I Didn’t Want Redis and Workers Just to Run an HTTP Request Later

For a simple “run this HTTP request later” task, a hosted callback service can take over persistence, dispatch, retries, and outcome tracking—while requiring idempotency and careful URL security.

If all you need is “Do this later”—send an HTTP request at a scheduled time and retry it if delivery fails—you may not need to operate a queue and worker fleet yourself. A hosted delayed-HTTP service such as Asynclay offers a simpler shape: your application submits a URL, payload, and optional execution time; the service handles persistence, dispatch, retries, and outcome records. That trades infrastructure work for reliance on an external service, and it does not make delivery exactly once.

What problem does “run this HTTP request later” describe?

Many applications need to defer an action: call a webhook after a delay, send a reminder at a chosen time, or ask another service to perform a follow-up task. The application needs more than a timer. It needs somewhere durable to record the request, a mechanism to attempt delivery at the right time, retry behavior when the endpoint fails, and a way to inspect the outcome.

In the approach described by Asynclay’s project author, the application sends the destination URL, payload, and optional execution time to the hosted service. Asynclay then persists and executes the job independently of the application process. This moves responsibility for dispatch, retries, and delivery records out of the application’s own queue-and-worker setup. It is the author’s description of the service, not an independent reliability or security assessment. Read the project article on DEV Community.

What does the hosted-service approach replace?

With an application-managed queue, your system typically includes a durable queue or datastore, worker processes that claim and execute jobs, and operational work to keep both healthy. The article’s proposed alternative is a narrower pipeline: application → Asynclay → HTTP endpoint. Your application submits a deferred HTTP job; the service owns its execution and records the result.

  • Bound with durable plastic coil so book lays conveniently flat when open. Made in the U.S.A.

The author describes PostgreSQL’s FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED as the mechanism used by dispatchers to claim jobs, so multiple instances can work without normally claiming the same job concurrently. The design also uses leases to recover work if a worker dies during execution. Those are implementation details reported by the project author, not independently verified properties or a guarantee that failures cannot cause duplicate delivery.

How should you choose between a hosted callback service and your own workers?

Decision factor Hosted delayed-HTTP service Application-operated queue and workers
Workflow complexity Fits a straightforward delayed HTTP call, as described by the service author. More suitable when jobs form complex workflows; the author points to tools such as BullMQ for this broader scope.
Processing intensity Intended for HTTP delivery rather than CPU-heavy processing. Better suited when dedicated workers must perform CPU-heavy work.
Custom worker code Does not require you to run custom workers for the described callback use case. Appropriate when the job needs custom worker logic.
Infrastructure control You delegate execution infrastructure to the hosted service. You retain control over the queue and worker infrastructure.
Execution, retries, and logs The service is described as owning delivery, retries, and outcome records. Your team operates those responsibilities.
Price, throughput, or comparative reliability Not stated in the article. Not stated in the article.

Choose the hosted model when the task is simply “call this endpoint later,” and reducing queue operations matters more than controlling the execution stack. Keep an application-managed queue when you need custom processing, complex orchestration, substantial CPU work, or full infrastructure control. The source does not provide enough evidence to rank the options on cost, throughput, or reliability.

What does at-least-once delivery mean for your endpoint?

The described delivery model is at-least-once, not exactly-once. A failed attempt may be retried, and a retry can reach an endpoint that already applied the request but whose response was lost. As a result, the endpoint may receive the same logical job more than once. Retrying improves the chance of eventual delivery; it does not guarantee that a side effect happens exactly once.

The author says the target receives a stable job identifier that can be used for idempotency. The receiving application should use that identifier—or another deduplication strategy—to recognize repeat attempts and avoid applying the same effect twice. Idempotency must be implemented at the receiving side; a retrying sender alone cannot ensure it.

What security checks matter for arbitrary callback URLs?

Accepting user-provided callback URLs creates an outbound-request security boundary. A service that fetches arbitrary destinations can be exposed to server-side request forgery (SSRF), including requests aimed at private IP ranges. DNS changes and redirects also complicate destination validation: a hostname that appears safe at validation time may resolve differently later, or redirect elsewhere.

The project author identifies these as concerns, but the available description does not establish that they are fully mitigated. Before sending sensitive data or allowing untrusted users to define destinations, establish what destination restrictions, DNS handling, redirect policy, and network protections the service actually enforces. Do not treat the existence of a hosted callback feature as proof that arbitrary URLs are safe.

What are the limits of this approach?

A hosted delayed-HTTP service is a focused alternative to operating background-job infrastructure for callback delivery; it is not a general replacement for queues and workers. The project author explicitly identifies complex workflows, CPU-heavy jobs, custom worker code, and complete infrastructure control as reasons to use a tool such as BullMQ with dedicated workers instead.
