I Ching Apps Compared: AI, Traditional Texts, and Casting Methods

I Ching apps combine AI and traditional texts in different ways. Compare named sources, casting options, AI roles, and privacy claims before choosing.

I Ching apps differ in what they treat as the reading: a traditional text, an AI-generated explanation, or a combination of the two. Compare the named translations and commentaries, casting options, AI workflow, and privacy claims before choosing. The examples below summarize developer-provided store listings; they are not hands-on tests, rankings, or evidence that one app interprets the I Ching more accurately.

How to compare I Ching apps

Start by separating the oracle text from the app’s explanation of it. A listing may describe AI as a conversational guide, a way to render a rule-selected reading in context, or an optional follow-up after a chart is available. Those are different workflows, even when all are called “AI interpretation.”

  • Text: Which translation, original-language material, line texts, and commentaries are named? Can you see the passages themselves?
  • Casting: Does the app simulate a method, guide you through it, or let you enter a cast you made yourself?
  • AI: Does AI select or generate the reading, explain an already selected text, or answer follow-up questions? Can you read the chart without using it?
  • Access and privacy: What does the listing say about offline use, local storage, or syncing? Check the current privacy disclosures, rather than treating a store description as an audit.
  • Cost: Check the live listing for the current price, trial terms, and recurring charges; availability and terms may vary by platform and region.

No independent comparative performance study is established by the listings described here. They do not demonstrate divinatory validity, translation quality, or that one app’s AI is more reliable than another’s.

AI workflows and text sources

I Ching AI

The iOS listing describes AI-guided readings and follow-up questions, with Wilhelm/Baynes or Confucian commentaries available on request. It says the app uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT API. Its examples include a career move, a difficult conversation, and a relationship at a turning point; these are examples supplied by the app, not evidence of what users commonly ask. The listing says, “Nothing is stored on our servers.” That is the developer’s privacy claim, so consult the current privacy policy and platform disclosure for details. The Original I Ching App

The Google Play listing describes an algorithm selecting a canonical reading first, with AI then expressing it in the user’s language and situation. It offers automatic or manual casting and lists Wilhelm/Baynes, James Legge, Zhou Yi, and a combined “Master” view. The listing’s line, “The AI never invents the oracle. It translates it,” is the developer’s characterization, not independently verified model behavior. The developer also says judgments and translations were checked against academic sources; that claim has not been independently audited here. View The Original I Ching App on Google Play.

Zhouyi I Ching Oracle

The iOS listing names the Judgment, commentaries, Image, line texts, and glosses, along with original text and classical commentaries. It describes yarrow-stalk and number divination, and the ability to ask several named AI assistants about a reading. It also lists reading-history syncing through iCloud and Apple Watch support. Casting methods and reference-first features

I Ching by James Godwin

The iOS listing presents a reference library covering all 64 hexagrams, with James Legge as the basis of its core translation. It describes guided three-coin casting, manual line entry, changing-line readings, and an on-device journal. This may suit readers who want a text-and-journal reference workflow; the listing does not establish translation quality or other comparative outcomes. View the I Ching iOS listing.

Plum Oracle

The iOS listing describes four methods—Plum Blossom, Six Yao, Numbers, and Manual—along with chart details and AI chat. It says users can cast and read a chart before starting an AI interpretation, and claims offline casting and history saved on the phone. Its sample question is “Do they still care?” That is an app-store example, not a finding about typical users. View the Plum Oracle iOS listing.

What casting descriptions do—and do not—tell you

The listings cover guided three-coin casting, manual line entry, yarrow-stalk and number methods, Plum Blossom, and Six Yao. “Manual” can mean entering lines from a cast made outside the app; a simulated method is not necessarily identical to carrying out every physical or historical practice. If the ritual or procedure matters to you, check exactly how the app implements it.

Feature comparison

Zhouyi I Ching Oracle (iOS) Original text, Judgment, commentaries, Image, line texts, and glosses Yarrow-stalk and number divination; multiple AI assistants can be asked about a reading Listing describes iCloud-synced history and Apple Watch support

These are representative listings surfaced by a broad search, not a complete market survey. Platform, region, app version, and store descriptions can differ. Feature and privacy statements in the table are listing claims, not independently tested behavior.

Choose by your priorities

  1. For studying a named translation: Look for an edition and commentary named explicitly, then confirm that the actual text and line passages are visible in the app. The listings above name Wilhelm/Baynes, James Legge, Zhou Yi, and other classical commentaries in different combinations.
  2. For a particular casting practice: Match the app’s listed method to your preference, and determine whether it guides a cast, simulates one, or accepts your own line entries.
  3. For AI assistance: Decide whether you want conversation and follow-up, contextual explanation of a reading selected by another process, or an AI option you can skip while reading the chart.
  4. For offline or private use: Read the current privacy policy and store privacy disclosures. If offline operation matters, test the feature on your own device; listing statements alone do not verify how data moves or what works without a connection.
  5. For cost certainty: Review the current platform listing before installing, including trial length, in-app purchases, and whether a charge recurs.

What the listings cannot establish

Store descriptions are useful for identifying advertised methods and features, but they are not comparative tests. They cannot establish which translation is best, whether an interpretation is spiritually or divinatorily valid, or whether one AI produces more dependable readings. Treat terms such as “canonical,” “verified,” and “private” as the app maker’s description unless you can inspect the text, methodology, and current privacy terms for yourself.
