Whether you can do the same depends on your exact camera model and whether it records locally without a cloud plan.
Can a camera keep recording without cloud storage?
Sometimes. Canceling cloud service does not automatically switch a camera to local recording. The specific model must support local storage, and you may need to install a compatible microSD card or connect a supported drive or hub. Some cameras keep recording locally without a subscription; others require cloud service for clip recording or use local storage only as a backup.

Also distinguish recording from monitoring: a camera may still provide live view, motion alerts, or two-way audio even when it no longer saves clips. Check the support page for your exact model and the plan terms for your region before canceling.

“Local storage” can mean a card inside the camera, a drive connected to a hub, or a second copy alongside cloud footage. The following manufacturer documentation illustrates why the model and storage setup matter; it is not a universal feature list.

Cloud plans may add features beyond storing clips, such as longer retention, search, detection, or backup. For example, Lorex’s US Connect Cloud+ page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists $59.99 per year for one camera and $169.99 per year for up to ten cameras, with 60-day cloud retention and AI Smart Search+ beta. These are that provider’s listed US prices, not the price behind my $85 saving or a general market rate. Lorex
Check compatibility before you cancel
- Identify the exact camera model and hub. Look up its manufacturer support page. Check whether local recording works without a paid plan, and whether the camera needs a card, USB drive, or specific hub.
- Confirm the recording mode. Find out whether local storage supports continuous recording, event-only recording, or both. Check whether manual recordings, alerts, and live view behave differently.
- Check what happens when storage fills. A system may overwrite old footage, stop recording, or handle capacity another way. Blink documents that new clips stop when its local storage is full until space is freed.
- Install the specified storage and enable recording. Buy only storage compatible with the exact model; some systems require a particular hub or module. On supported Wyze cameras, for example, a compatible microSD card must be installed and recording enabled.
- Test before ending the plan. Trigger a recording, then confirm you can find and play it from the camera or hub. Check remote access and retention so you know what will still work after cloud service ends.
Calculate your own annual saving
Start with the recurring charge you will actually cancel, then subtract any required hardware cost on an annualized basis. If your plan costs $X per year and compatible storage costs $Y and lasts N years, a simple estimate is: annual saving = X − (Y ÷ N). Include any other required recurring fees. If you buy a card or drive, its price is a one-time outlay; dividing by its useful life is only an estimate, not a guarantee of how long it will last.

The title’s $85 is a personal claim, and the available information does not identify the former plan or calculation behind it. Do not treat it as a typical saving. Plan prices also vary: Lorex’s listed US prices above are one provider’s figures, not a substitute for checking your own bill and cancellation terms.

A local copy is not automatically an off-site backup. If the camera, card, drive, or hub is stolen, damaged, or inaccessible, footage stored there may be unavailable. Cloud storage can provide a separate copy and may offer search or longer retention, depending on the plan. Choose based on the footage you need to preserve and the risks you are willing to accept—not just the subscription price.

Service terms can also change. In a January 13, 2023 notice, Xiaomi said free home-surveillance recording for specified models would end on April 30, 2023, and described SD-card storage or Xiaomi Home Secure as alternatives.
