I Built My Friend a Private Japanese Conversation Partner with Gemma

A Gemma-based Japanese practice app can run locally on a compatible phone, but conversation memory, Japanese quality, and whole-app privacy all depend on the implementation.

I built the idea around a small, local Gemma model and a simple rule: the app sends the current turn together with a limited conversation history, then displays the model’s reply. That can make a useful Japanese-practice experiment, but Gemma is a model family—not a finished tutor—and the design alone does not prove Japanese fluency or teaching quality.

What the conversation partner does on each turn

The app is a loop, not a model that remembers everything by itself. When my friend enters Japanese or English, the app adds that message to a bounded conversation history and submits the history with the current instruction. It displays the reply, then keeps or discards the turn according to the memory policy.

  1. Accept a turn: take the learner’s Japanese or English text.
  2. Update context: append it to a limited history so the next response can refer to the recent exchange.
  3. Request a reply: send that history and the current instruction to Gemma.
  4. Show the result: display the model’s response to the learner.
  5. Apply the memory policy: retain the turn for the next request, or discard it when the session ends.

Google’s chatbot tutorial supplies conversation history with each new prompt because the model is stateless between independent requests. In other words, “remembering” is an app feature: the app must provide context again. A bounded history also gives the developer a way to limit how much text is sent on every turn.

How do I make a Gemma chatbot remember the conversation?

For short-lived context, keep recent turns in the app’s active session and include them in each request. For durable personalization—such as a preferred explanation style or a continuing study record—store that information separately from the model, explain where it lives, and give the user a way to delete it. The model itself does not preserve prior interactions between requests.

These choices affect both usefulness and privacy. A short history may lose older context; a persistent record can support continuity but needs an explicit retention and deletion policy. The app should not imply that conversation history is stored only on the phone unless that is true of its storage, backups, and any connected services.

Can I run Gemma locally on my phone?

Yes, some Gemma models can run on phones, but the answer depends on the model, runtime, and device. Google’s Android demo for Gemma 3 1B recommends at least 4 GB of device memory for best performance; that is a recommendation for that demo, not a guarantee for every phone or model. The Google Developers Blog reported a 529 MB model size and prefill performance of up to 2,585 tokens per second for its specific Google AI Edge LLM inference setup in 2025. Prefill is a setup-specific processing measurement, not a general promise about how quickly a user will see a complete answer.

Google’s Android demo describes downloading the model and running it with the Google AI Edge LLM inference API, with CPU or mobile GPU options. Before installing, check the requirements for the exact model and runtime combination rather than treating one demo’s memory recommendation as universal. An existing phone that meets the requirements is a sensible first test.

The current Gemma overview also describes the E2B and E4B edge models as able to operate offline on phones, Raspberry Pi, and Jetson Nano, and lists Ollama and LM Studio among model download and run options. Those are alternative deployment paths, not interchangeable instructions: confirm the model version, platform compatibility, memory needs, and license terms for the setup you choose.

Can Gemma help me practice Japanese?

It can be the basis for a Japanese conversation-practice app, but the available guidance does not establish how accurate, natural, or pedagogically effective a particular Gemma checkpoint will be in Japanese. Google says Gemma can be adapted for specific applications; its spoken-language guide demonstrates a Korean task and says the pattern can be adapted to other languages with text input and output. It recommends task-specific fine-tuning for stronger non-English task performance.

The guide uses about 20 request-and-expected-response examples to illustrate basic functionality for a target-language task. That is not a Japanese-specific result, a universal minimum, or evidence of conversational fluency. Prompt examples can shape behavior, while fine-tuning takes more work and still needs evaluation against the intended use.

For a tutor-like experience, decide what the app should do—hold a casual conversation, explain a phrase, or suggest a correction—and check real outputs for those tasks. If claiming that it reliably corrects grammar or teaches well, validate those claims with examples for the exact model version and behavior being described. Google’s Intended Use Statement makes the boundary clear: “Gemma itself is not a finished product and does not perform specific tasks directly.” Developers are responsible for adapting and deploying it for their intended application.

Does running an AI locally mean my chats are private?

Local inference can mean the prompt does not need to go to a hosted inference service, and Google’s AI Edge material describes offline availability and privacy benefits from on-device processing. That statement applies only when the selected configuration truly performs inference locally and has no cloud fallback.

It does not by itself establish that no data leaves the phone. Model downloads require a network connection, and app logs, analytics, crash reports, operating-system backups, or networked features can create separate data paths. A privacy-conscious implementation should state what the app stores, whether it sends diagnostics or telemetry, whether backups include chat data, and how a user can clear any saved history.

Choosing a practical setup

Choice Useful when Trade-off to check
On-device inference You want offline operation and prompts need not be sent to a hosted inference service. Device memory, runtime compatibility, model download, storage, and app-level data handling still matter.
Hosted inference You prefer not to run the model on the phone. Determine what conversation data reaches the service and whether the app depends on a network connection.
Phone Portability and an existing compatible device matter most. Google’s 4 GB memory guidance applies to its Gemma 3 1B Android demo, not all phone setups.
Workstation or edge board You can prioritize a different hardware and deployment setup over carrying the model everywhere. Compatibility, memory use, setup effort, and the selected model’s terms still need checking.

The useful question is not simply whether Gemma can run locally. It is whether the chosen model and runtime work on the device, whether the resulting Japanese behavior meets the app’s purpose, and whether the surrounding app handles history as promised.
