Kylmora is a macOS browser built as an AppKit app around the system’s WebKit engine—the same engine Safari uses. Its author says it bundles no Chromium and uses no Swift packages or third-party dependencies. The design puts separate browsing identities, deferred loading of hidden tabs, and a compact app bundle ahead of Chrome-engine compatibility.
What “no dependencies” means in Kylmora
In the author’s September 16, 2026 project announcement, Kylmora is described as a few-hundred-file Swift app built with AppKit and Apple’s system WebKit. It does not ship its own Chromium engine or rely on third-party Swift packages, according to the author. This is not a claim that the browser runs without system frameworks: it depends on macOS’s built-in technologies.

That choice defines both the product and its limits. Kylmora’s web rendering follows Safari’s engine rather than Chrome’s. The author says a site that only works in Chrome will not work in Kylmora, and acknowledges that Safari’s compatibility quirks come with the decision. The project announcement does not include a site-by-site compatibility test or an independent comparison with Safari, Arc, Zen, or Chromium-based browsers.
How Spaces separate browsing identities
Kylmora’s central organizing concept is the Space. The author describes each Space as having a separate cookie jar, appearance settings, and URL routing rules. Separate cookie jars can keep accounts for the same website apart—for example, work and personal sessions—without mixing their site cookies.

Spaces can also use different light or dark appearance settings and colors or gradients. Space Routing sends matching addresses to a chosen Space. These are author-described capabilities; the announcement does not detail the rules’ configuration interface or specify other kinds of data isolated between Spaces.
What happens to hidden and sleeping tabs
The author says an unopened hidden tab initially keeps only its sidebar row, title, and URL; it has no web view or WebKit content process until shown. That is a different lifecycle from keeping every restored tab fully loaded, though the announcement does not provide a comparative memory test.

After a tab has been active, background tabs can sleep after idle time or under memory pressure. The author says they resume with scroll position, form contents, and history. The exact sleep threshold and behavior across individual websites are not specified in the announcement.

Author-reported bundle and memory figures
The project announcement reports measurements from the author’s build with 35 tabs restored and one page showing. These are the author’s figures, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a controlled comparison with another browser.

| Measurement | Author-reported result |
|---|---|
| Release bundle | 5.2 MB |
| Time until the window appeared | 0.62 seconds warm; 0.97 seconds cold |
| Browser process at the window | 38 MB |
| WebKit content process with one page | Approximately 200 MB |
The process figures describe different things: the 38 MB figure is for the browser process, while the approximately 200 MB figure is for a WebKit content process with one page. They should not be read as a total memory figure for all restored tabs, nor as proof that Kylmora uses less memory than another browser under equivalent conditions.
Other features in the project announcement
The author lists a range of features beyond Spaces and tab lifecycle:

- On-device translation and extensions using Chrome or Firefox manifest formats.
- Content blocking built on WebKit content rule lists, with EasyList and uBlock Origin filters.

In a comment on the announcement, the author says filter lists are converted into WKContentRuleList rules and shared across tabs, with cookie-consent auto-rejection and an element picker. The comment gives a then-current command catalog of 117 commands—83 with shortcuts and 34 without—and says shortcuts could not yet be remapped. These figures describe the catalog at the time of that comment, not a permanent feature guarantee.

Privacy statements and their limits
The author says Kylmora has no AI, assistant, summarizer, or chat sidebar, sends no information about the user or Mac, and makes one self-initiated request per day for a JSON update file. Those are statements in the project announcement, not findings from an independent network or privacy audit. Readers who need to verify traffic or security properties should inspect the project and assess the app themselves.

Who can try Kylmora
The announcement states that Kylmora is licensed under Apache-2.0, supports macOS 14 and later, and is distributed as a signed, notarized DMG through its releases page. Release status and requirements may change, so check the current project links before installing.
For a first open-source project, Kylmora is an unusually broad browser effort: its author describes a native macOS interface, identity-based Spaces, tab suspension, and several built-in tools. The tradeoff is equally clear: it uses Safari’s WebKit compatibility rather than promising Chrome behavior, and its performance and privacy claims remain author-reported rather than independently verified.
