IMFMSynth is a software instrument built around eight freely connected operators that can use either sine waves or wavetables. I started it to make FM’s modulation relationships easier to see and explore: you can draw signal paths, adjust connection depth and phase, and use wavetable operators as part of an FM patch. The official page also documents DX7 bank import, a browser demo, and plug-in builds for Windows and macOS. Check the official IMFMSynth page for current availability and system details.
Why I built IMFMSynth
FM can produce compelling sounds, but designing a patch from scratch can be difficult when the modulation relationships are hard to follow. In my launch post, I describe IMFMSynth as an attempt to make those relationships more visible through a modern routing interface, while letting operators use wavetables as well as sine waves. I had producers, composers, and arrangers in mind, including people who want a more approachable way to explore what FM is doing to a sound. These are the goals behind the design, not a claim that every user will find FM easy.

One learning path I describe is to begin with a wavetable-shaped sound and then apply FM to emphasize its attack. That example illustrates the instrument’s premise: an operator need not be limited to a sine wave, and its role in a patch can be explored through the drawn signal paths.

How the eight-operator design works
Draw connections instead of choosing only a fixed algorithm
The central interface puts operators, filters, and output in a routing view where you can draw connections. The product page describes eight freely wired operators: one can modulate another, with controls for connection depth and phase, and operators can feed back into themselves. You can start from one of 32 algorithms, or use the routing view to shape a different signal path.
Use wavetables as operator sources
An operator can play a wavetable instead of a sine. The official page says the scan position can be modulated and that Serum and Vital WAV tables load directly. This is file support for compatible wavetable audio files; it does not mean IMFMSynth is a Serum or Vital plug-in or that their full presets and instruments are imported.

Shape envelopes, modulation, and tone
The product page also lists hand-drawn, multi-point envelopes with per-segment curves and loop and sustain points; four modulation slots; and six LFO shapes. Operators have hard-sync and ring-modulation options. For tone shaping and effects, the documented signal chain includes three filter stages and an effects rack with drive, chorus, delay, reverb, and 8-bit reduction.
What comes with the instrument
The official page says IMFMSynth includes 30 presets created by the developer. It also documents importing DX7 .syx banks: all 32 voices in an imported bank become editable patches. That is a file-import feature; you do not need a physical DX7 to use it.

Try IMFMSynth in a browser
The official page says the browser version uses the same C++ DSP as the VST3, compiled to WebAssembly. In my launch post, I say the demo requires no account, but leaves out some presets and file import/export. It can give you a way to explore the sound engine and interface; the available information does not establish that it tests DAW integration or every feature of the downloadable plug-in.
