BelPet is a small desktop pet and Spotify controller built with Godot 4 and C#. Its creator, pixeguy, combined a browser-based playback SDK, Spotify’s Web API and native desktop-window behavior to make a draggable character that can control music without requiring the full Spotify app to stay in front. The project is also a useful account of what happens when a first Godot project crosses the boundaries between a game engine, a web view, an API and the operating system.
What is BelPet?
Pixeguy describes BelPet as a desktop pet built with Godot 4 and C#. Bel can be dragged around the Windows desktop and settles above the taskbar when released. The character doubles as a compact Spotify controller, with controls for playback, track navigation and seeking, plus album artwork. Scrolling over Bel adjusts volume, according to the creator’s project account.

The idea was to keep a small music controller on the desktop instead of repeatedly opening Spotify. This was pixeguy’s first Godot project after years of using Unity, and their first project involving a public API or SDK. How BelPet connects Godot to Spotify
The central challenge was that BelPet’s main application is written in Godot and C#, while Spotify’s Web Playback SDK is a client-side JavaScript library designed for browser use. Spotify describes the SDK as a way to create a local Spotify Connect device in a browser, stream and control tracks, and read playback metadata. Pixeguy’s solution was to use godot_wry to embed a WebView, then host a small HTML and JavaScript page containing the SDK inside it. Pixeguy describes two playback situations. BelPet uses the Web Playback SDK when it is the active playback device. When another Spotify device is playing, the app uses the Web API to keep its display and controls in step with that device. Spotify’s API reference documents operations for reading current playback and the currently playing track, transferring playback, starting or pausing playback, skipping, seeking and setting volume. This distinction matters: the two modes are not separate products, but different paths through Spotify depending on which device is playing. The creator’s account describes the setup and requirements they encountered; it should not be treated as a universal statement of current Spotify eligibility.

Making Godot behave like a desktop pet
BelPet’s visual character needs a window that behaves unlike a conventional game window. Pixeguy says the app uses a transparent, borderless, always-on-top native window. Custom mouse-passthrough regions let clicks through transparent parts of the window to applications underneath, while Bel remains clickable and draggable.

This is one of the project’s clearest cross-boundary lessons. Godot handles the application and character, but a desktop pet also has to coordinate with native window behavior: transparency, stacking order, input handling and movement in relation to the desktop.
What the Spotify restrictions changed
Pixeguy says they discovered Spotify Development Mode restrictions late in development. In the multi-device scenario, where BelPet relies on the Web API while another device is active, users must be authorized for the creator’s development app. The proposed workaround in the account is for each user to create a Spotify developer application, put their own Client ID into BelPet and build the project. The creator also says Spotify Premium is required.

These are the creator’s reported requirements, not a guarantee of current access for every account or use case. Spotify’s API documentation links to a guide on Development Mode changes dated February 2026, so access conditions are time-sensitive. Check Spotify’s live Web API documentation and applicable policies before relying on the project’s historical setup.
Spotify’s Web Playback SDK documentation also says the SDK is browser-oriented, supports major desktop browsers and must not be used in commercial projects without Spotify’s prior written approval. That is an important limit for anyone considering distributing or commercializing a similar app; the existence of an open-source project does not itself establish permission for commercial use.

What the first Godot project taught its creator
Pixeguy lists experience with Godot 4 and C#, REST APIs, OAuth authentication, Spotify’s Web API and Web Playback SDK, communication between C# and a browser SDK, embedding a WebView, native window manipulation, mouse passthrough and desktop packaging among the project’s learning outcomes.
The broader lesson is not a particular code recipe. A modest visual idea—a character that sits on the desktop—can require coordination across an engine, a browser component, an authentication flow, remote services and operating-system window behavior. BelPet’s architecture makes those boundaries visible, while the creator’s account leaves implementation details such as exact code, polling interval and build procedure unspecified.
Project status and what was left unfinished
Pixeguy says BelPet is open source under the MIT License. A planned album catalogue for browsing albums or playlists and starting music from BelPet was not completed. The creator says they chose not to develop the project much further for now because of the Spotify API restrictions. The project account is available at DEV Community.
