Haikal Fiqih describes Camora as an open-source Linux app that adds camera effects to a webcam feed and sends the processed video to other applications through a PipeWire virtual camera. The author says it offers background removal, blur and replacement, auto framing, low-light enhancement and camera controls; CPU inference is supported, with CUDA acceleration optional. Camora is reported as an alpha release, so treat its feature list and package details as the project author’s claims rather than independently verified performance results.
Is there an NVIDIA Broadcast for Linux?
Camora is one project aimed at that use case: it sits between a physical webcam and apps such as OBS, browsers or video-call software, applying effects before those apps receive the image. Haikal Fiqih introduced it in a September 29, 2026 article as an open-source Linux alternative to NVIDIA Broadcast. Read Fiqih’s Camora article.
That comparison describes the broad purpose, not a claim that Camora is a drop-in replacement or has feature parity. NVIDIA’s official Broadcast page lists Windows 10 64-bit and an RTX 2060 or higher among its requirements; those are requirements for NVIDIA Broadcast, not Camora. NVIDIA Broadcast requirements and features.
What Camora can do
Fiqih lists these camera functions for Camora:
- Background effects: remove the background, blur it or replace it.
- Auto framing: adjust the framing around the person in view.
- Low-light enhancement: improve the appearance of a dim camera image.
- Camera controls: adjust V4L2 controls and set resolution and frame rate.
These are the author’s stated features; the available material does not establish their quality, latency or compatibility across particular cameras and applications.

How the virtual-camera pipeline works
The intended path is physical camera → V4L2 capture → Camora processing and effects → PipeWire virtual camera → an application such as OBS or a browser. In practice, a virtual camera is useful because the receiving app can select the processed feed as a camera source instead of having to apply Camora’s effects itself.
Fiqih describes a Flutter desktop interface with native processing built around C++, GStreamer, PipeWire and ONNX Runtime, plus optional CUDA. This is the author’s account of the implementation, not an independent code review. The article’s stated release is Camora v1.0.0, while also describing the application as alpha.

Does Camora require an NVIDIA GPU?
No, according to Fiqih’s description: CPU inference is available, and CUDA is an optional acceleration path for NVIDIA systems. The article does not say that an RTX GPU is required to run Camora. It also provides no independent performance measurements, so it cannot establish how fast or smooth effects will be on a particular CPU or GPU.
Fiqih reports that the basic Debian package is around 30 MB and describes the NVIDIA runtime as optional. That is an author-reported package figure, not a verified current download size. The article does not establish a complete distribution-support matrix or a confirmed repository URL, so check the project’s current release information before choosing an installation method.

How Camora differs from an OBS-only alternative
Camora is described as providing a virtual camera for use across compatible applications. A separate Linux project, obs-ai-matting, is an OBS Studio filter based on Robust Video Matting and ONNX Runtime. Its README describes a separately downloaded model, CUDA use and a CPU fallback, along with Arch-oriented dependency and installation details.
The distinction is practical: an OBS filter processes video inside OBS, while a virtual-camera workflow is designed to make processed video available to other apps as a camera source. The projects have different installation requirements and are not interchangeable. The obs-ai-matting README’s instructions should not be taken as Camora installation instructions.

What is still uncertain
The available article supports Camora’s stated purpose, features, implementation outline, alpha status and reported Debian package size. Those gaps matter if you need a production-ready camera path or must confirm that a specific Linux setup will work.
