Those are different capabilities, with different security and lifecycle implications. The defining question for any build is not simply whether it remembers, but what it stores, who can retrieve it, and how an analyst can verify where it came from.
That distinction matters when describing a security assistant. Product documentation shows that vendors use all of these approaches; it does not establish which one a particular independently built assistant implements or prove that memory improves security outcomes. A credible build account should be precise about its own design and evaluation rather than borrowing vendor capabilities as if they belonged to the project.

What “remembering” means in a security investigation
Memory is not a single feature. A system can keep context within one investigation, reopen a previous conversation, maintain a searchable history of cases and artifacts, or inject selected documents into later conversations. These models differ in what persists, how broadly it is shared, and whether a response can be traced to source evidence.
| Memory model | What carries forward | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation context | Earlier exchanges in a chat or investigation may inform follow-up questions. | That the content is durable, searchable across cases, or available to other analysts. |
| Resumable chat | An analyst can return to a prior assistant conversation. | That the system maintains a structured case history or a shared organizational memory. |
| Case and artifact history | Related entities, earlier cases, or analyst notes associated with an artifact may be accessible. | That every remembered detail is correct, current, or visible to every user. |
| Curated knowledge base | Selected documents or facts can inform later assistant responses. | That the knowledge is automatically updated, or that it persists unchanged through upgrades. |
For example, AWS describes Agentic Memory in OpenSearch Service as retaining context within a conversation or investigation across web sessions. Microsoft documents follow-up questions using conversation context and the ability to resume a previous Security Copilot conversation. Neither description, on its own, means an organization has a durable, searchable record of every investigation.

Other products describe different forms of continuity. Google Security Operations presents history related to an artifact, including entities that interacted with it, prior cases containing it, and notes from analysts. Elastic’s AI Assistant Knowledge Base lets users add documents for the assistant to remember. Splunk Enterprise Security documents generated summaries and narratives that can be saved or attached to cases. These vendor descriptions illustrate design options; they are not independent evaluations of accuracy or operational impact.
Choose the unit of memory before calling it “investigation memory”
A build should state whether the unit it remembers is a chat, an investigation, a case, an artifact, or a curated document. Without that definition, “it remembers previous investigations” can suggest capabilities the system may not have. A prior chat is not necessarily a case record; a document inserted into a knowledge base is not necessarily a verified finding; and an artifact history is not automatically a complete incident timeline.

Then document the memory’s scope. Is it private to one analyst, available to a team, or shared across an organization? Does retrieval follow case membership and source-system permissions? Google says its assistant respects configured field-level or document-level restrictions. That is a product-specific description, but it highlights a general requirement: retrieval must not expose information merely because the model can access it.
Make the memory lifecycle part of the design
Persistence is a lifecycle, not just a storage decision. Before relying on memory, specify when information is written, how long it remains, how it is corrected or deleted, who can share it, and what happens during migration or an upgrade.

The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
- Write rules: identify which information is eligible to persist and whether an analyst must approve a write.
- Correction and deletion: provide a way to correct or remove a mistaken memory, and define how that change affects later retrieval.
- Retention and sharing: state the retention policy and whether a memory is personal, case-scoped, or shared.
- Upgrade and migration: test whether memory survives version changes and explain any limits. Elastic documentation warns that Elastic Stack users upgrading from Security 8.15 to a newer version lose information previously stored by the assistant.
- Traceability: preserve links from a recalled claim to its originating record, document, or analyst note.
That Elastic warning is a concrete reminder that a product’s memory behavior can be version-specific. It is not evidence that other systems share the same limitation; lifecycle behavior must be checked for the specific system and version in use.
Treat recalled content as context, not proof
A remembered statement can help an analyst resume work, but it is not a substitute for the evidence behind it. The assistant should make it possible to distinguish a source event or document from a generated summary, hypothesis, or prior conversation. That distinction helps analysts revisit stale assumptions and verify whether the underlying evidence still supports a conclusion.

Memory also creates a route for bad information to influence future responses. The Cloud Security Alliance published a research note on AI assistant memory poisoning in March 2026. That makes review of persistent memory and provenance worth addressing; the note does not establish how prevalent such attacks are.
Recommended Free Tools
- Review what can enter persistent memory and whether untrusted content can cause a write.
- Record the source of recalled information so an analyst can inspect it.
- Scope retrieval to the user’s identity and case permissions.
- Keep human review in the loop for consequential recommendations or actions.
Human oversight and auditability still matter
Memory does not make an assistant’s analysis independently correct. AWS says users are responsible for evaluating generated recommendations and maintaining human oversight, and documents audit logging for agent actions. For AWS Security Incident Response, the documented AI Investigative Agent gathers evidence from CloudTrail, IAM, EC2, and Cost Explorer; actions are logged in CloudTrail under AWSServiceRoleForSupport. The agent applies to AWS-supported cases, not self-managed cases.

Product-specific scope matters when assessing what an assistant can investigate. AWS documentation describes GuardDuty Investigation as a Preview feature that considers finding context, related activity from the preceding 90 days, affected resources, threat intelligence, and threat indicators. Its documented scope is GuardDuty findings and accounts. Preview status and availability can change, so confirm the current product documentation before relying on them.
Approval points also vary. Microsoft documents that Defender chat may propose a multi-step plan and ask the user to approve it before execution. That is a useful example of separating suggested work from authorized action, not evidence that every assistant uses the same control.
Compare systems by evidence and boundaries, not by the word “memory”
When evaluating a security assistant or planning a build, compare the actual behaviors that affect investigation continuity and risk:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Memory unit and scope: chat, investigation, case, artifact, or selected documents; personal or shared.
- Retrieval and permissions: how information is found and whether case, field, and document access controls apply.
- Provenance and audit: whether recalled content links to its sources and whether assistant actions are logged.
- Lifecycle controls: retention, correction, deletion, sharing, and behavior during upgrades or migration.
- Coverage and approvals: supported case types, data sources, geographic availability, and actions that require user approval.
- Evidence of effectiveness: whether claims about detection, speed, or error reduction are backed by independent evaluation.
Official documentation establishes what a vendor says a product can do; it does not, by itself, prove better detection, faster response, or fewer mistakes. No independent benchmark comparing memory-enabled security assistants, or outcome statistic for investigation memory, is established here. Keep those claims separate from descriptions of product features.
