An AI support agent can continue a conversation by retaining the current thread, recall selected customer details across separate chats, and look up approved support information. Those are three different capabilities—not one magic “memory” feature. The title alone does not establish which model, framework, database, or memory design this particular build uses, so this guide explains the architecture without attributing unconfirmed implementation details to it.
What does it mean for a support agent to remember?
“Memory” can refer to information kept for the current exchange, information retained for a customer across conversations, or authoritative knowledge the agent consults to answer questions. Separating these scopes makes it easier to choose what to store, what to retrieve, and what the agent should trust.

Short-term or session memory: the current conversation
Session memory is the history and state associated with an active conversation. It lets an agent take earlier turns into account—for example, remembering that a customer already tried a troubleshooting step. In LangGraph’s terminology, short-term memory is thread-scoped state persisted with a checkpointer. A thread is the conversation boundary; persistence lets the state survive beyond a single model call. LangGraph’s memory documentation distinguishes this from memory that is shared across threads.

Its documentation describes session storage using in-memory or file-backed SQLite and Redis-backed options. As the OpenAI Agents SDK sessions reference puts it, “Session stores conversation history for a specific session, allowing agents to maintain context without requiring explicit manual memory management.”

Long-term memory: selected facts across conversations
Long-term memory means durable information available beyond the current thread. A system might retain a customer’s preferred contact method or an unresolved issue, but it should not assume that every detail in a transcript deserves permanent storage. LangGraph describes long-term memory as user-specific or application-level data accessible across threads through a namespace. The same documentation notes that memory may store facts, experiences, or rules and can be updated inline or asynchronously.
A transcript archive and a useful memory are not the same thing. An archive preserves what was said; a memory system selects, structures, and retrieves information for a later task. LangChain’s official documentation cautions that “Long-term memory is a complex challenge without a one-size-fits-all solution.”

Support knowledge: what is currently true
Product documentation, account records, and current policies are a separate context layer. A conversation history can tell an agent what a customer was previously told, but it does not prove that the statement remains correct. For reliable answers, retrieve current, approved sources rather than treating old chat messages as policy.

A practical design separates identifying the conversation from deciding which context is relevant. This is an architectural pattern, not a claim about the implementation behind the title.

- Identify the customer and conversation. Establish the account and thread using the system’s approved identifiers. Keep customer records isolated so one person’s history cannot appear in another person’s context.
- Load the active thread. Retrieve relevant recent turns and any current conversation state. Persisting this state supports continuity across turns.
- Retrieve selected durable context. Look up only customer-specific memories relevant to the current issue, rather than blindly attaching an entire history.
- Retrieve trusted support material. Search current product, account, or policy sources for facts the answer depends on.
- Build bounded context. Give the model the recent exchange, relevant durable details, and sourced support material, while respecting context limits and access permissions.
- Respond or route. Generate a reply when the evidence is sufficient; otherwise ask a clarifying question or hand the case to a human.
- Save deliberately. Store the new thread items and update durable memory only when a detail is useful, appropriate, and permitted to retain.
Choose how to handle long conversations
Sending every past message forever is not a complete strategy. Long histories can exceed a model’s context window and increase latency and cost. They can also make it harder to find the detail that matters. LangGraph discusses these limits, while an OpenAI cookbook example on session memory shows how trimming can remove older constraints that remain important.

These approaches can be combined. For example, an agent could use recent turns verbatim, a compact summary for continuity, and targeted retrieval for a past issue. The right balance depends on the workload and should be evaluated for context cost, response time, and whether important constraints survive.

Keep customer memory separate from policy retrieval
Customer-specific memory helps the agent personalize or continue service; an approved knowledge source grounds what it says about products and rules. This separation matters because memory can be stale, incomplete, or based on an earlier misunderstanding. A useful support pipeline should be able to trace a policy-dependent answer to a current source, rather than treating a prior conversation as authority.
A 2026 paper, “Supporting human operators during customer service interactions with agentic-RAG,” describes retrieval-augmented generation for customer service dialogues, including corpus preparation, indexing, retrieval, generation, and iterative context refinement. The authors report using the ABCD customer-service corpus, which contains more than 10,000 human-human dialogues organized into 10 topics and 55 subtopics. They report improvements in suggestion quality, relevance, and accuracy over a naïve RAG baseline, with stronger gains in ambiguous and multi-topic cases. Those are findings for the paper’s system and evaluation, not a guarantee for every support agent.

Plan for correction, deletion, and isolation
Memory is useful only if it can be governed. A customer may correct a stored preference, ask for information to be removed, or have a record that should not be retained in the first place. A production design should define retention and deletion behavior, access controls, customer isolation, and how incorrect memories are corrected. Avoid retaining sensitive details unless there is a clear need and a valid basis for doing so.
ChatGPT’s consumer memory controls are not the controls for a custom support agent. OpenAI’s help material says available controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace and describes reviewing and deleting saved memories. Those product settings do not establish how an independently built agent stores or handles customer data. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ is relevant to ChatGPT, not a substitute for a custom system’s own retention and privacy design.
What must be verified about this build
The title does not say what provider or model the agent uses, where memory is stored, how facts are extracted, or whether it resolves cases autonomously or assists a human. Those details should be confirmed from the actual project before being described as implementation facts. When documenting a build, specify:

- Which framework and model provider are used, and which versions.
- Whether memory is thread-scoped, shared across threads, or both—and what identifiers define those boundaries.
- What storage backend persists conversation state and durable memories, and how long each is retained.
- How memory is retrieved, corrected, and deleted, including how customer records are isolated.
- Which approved sources ground product and policy answers, and what happens when retrieval is uncertain.
- Whether the agent replies directly, requests clarification, or escalates to a human.
- What evaluation demonstrates that it recalls relevant context without exposing unrelated or outdated information.
There is no universally best database or memory backend established by these sources. Choose based on the actual application’s durability, sharing, retrieval precision, context and latency costs, deletion requirements, customer isolation, and operational complexity. In the OpenAI Agents SDK, also choose the state-management pattern intentionally: its sessions documentation notes that a session cannot be combined in one run with certain run-level continuation mechanisms.
