This title does not identify the assistant’s text-access method, model, network behavior, permissions, supported apps, or test results, so those details cannot be attributed to the project. What can be established is how Apple’s built-in Writing Tools work at the platform level, what a separate assistant might do, and what to verify before trusting one with your writing.
What a local writing assistant for Mac text fields needs to do
A cross-app assistant has two distinct jobs: obtain text from the active field, then return generated text to the right place. The method determines which fields it can handle and what access it needs. A tool might use app-specific APIs, macOS Accessibility APIs, a selection-and-pasteboard workflow, or another mechanism; those approaches are not interchangeable.

- Text access: Does it read the whole field, only selected text, or text supplied by the user?
- Generation: Which model and inference runtime produce the rewrite or draft? “Local” should mean the relevant text and model inference stay on the Mac, not merely that the app’s interface is installed there.
- Text insertion: Does it replace the selection, insert at the cursor, or overwrite the field? What happens if the active app does not expose editable text?
- Network activity: Ask separately about model downloads, updates, telemetry, and optional cloud features. A locally run model does not by itself establish that the entire app makes no network calls.
- User control: Check whether generated text is shown for review, whether replacement can be declined, and whether the original can be restored or undone.
Without project-specific implementation details, it is not possible to state which of these behaviors this assistant has or to claim that its processing is fully on-device.

Writing Tools are Apple’s integrated option, rather than a separate assistant that must obtain text from other apps through its own workflow. Apple says standard AppKit NSTextView and NSTextField controls automatically support Writing Tools, and custom text views can add support through Apple’s APIs. That is a platform capability, not a guarantee that every field in every Mac app works. Apple’s AppKit documentation explains the developer support.

For users, Apple describes Writing Tools as available in most places people write, including third-party apps and websites. Features include proofreading, rewriting, summarizing, organizing text, and composition. Availability can vary by system, region, language, and service; consult Apple’s Mac user guide for the applicable experience.
| Question | Apple Writing Tools | Separate local assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Most writing contexts, according to Apple; support depends on the app and text control. | Depends on its text-access method and the apps and fields it supports; this project’s tested coverage is not stated. |
| Text access and insertion | Integrated with supported controls and system features; exact interaction depends on the app and chosen tool. | Could use Accessibility APIs, app APIs, a selection/pasteboard flow, or another approach. This project’s method and replacement behavior are not stated. |
| Model and processing | Availability and behavior depend on Apple’s system, region, language, and service. | “Local” is meaningful only if the relevant text and inference remain on-device; this project’s model and network behavior are not stated. |
| Permissions | Uses Apple’s integrated system experience. | Requirements depend on implementation. If it accesses other apps’ fields through Accessibility, users should be told why that access is needed and how to revoke it. |
| Customization, latency, and resource use | Not established here for a particular configuration. | Model controls, measured latency, and resource requirements are not stated. |
What platform frameworks do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s Foundation Models framework gives developers access to Apple foundation models, including on-device models. Apple also describes Core AI as a framework for loading and running models on device on Apple silicon. These are platform options, not evidence that this assistant uses either framework. They also do not establish the project’s model size, memory needs, performance, or minimum Mac configuration.

One documented example of a different product’s approach comes from Typeahead: its help page says it reads text from the active field using macOS Accessibility APIs, processes it with a local model, and inserts the result at the cursor. That description is Typeahead’s account of its own workflow; it should not be generalized to this project or treated as an independent test.
What to verify before using an assistant with private writing
- Identify exactly what is read. Find out whether the app accesses the selection, the entire active field, or text you explicitly provide.
- Check where processing happens. Confirm the model and inference runtime, and ask whether text leaves the Mac for generation, telemetry, or any optional feature. Model downloads and updates are separate network questions.
- Review permissions. If Accessibility access is requested, inspect the macOS Privacy & Security settings and confirm the reason matches the app’s documented behavior. macOS lets users manage or revoke app permissions there.
- Test the intended fields. Try the specific apps and controls you use, including what happens when text is selected, when the cursor is placed without a selection, and when a field is unsupported.
- Confirm recovery options. Before letting a tool replace text, check whether you can review the result, decline it, or undo the change.
A local Mac writing assistant example, HitokuDraft’s documentation, is another product-specific reference for a local writing workflow. Its details do not establish this project’s architecture or requirements.

Does using a local model require a new Mac?
Not necessarily. Apple’s Core AI material establishes on-device model execution on Apple silicon as a platform capability, but the cited sources do not specify a minimum Mac configuration, memory amount, or model size for this assistant. Whether an existing Mac is sufficient depends on the actual model and runtime. Do not treat a hardware purchase as a prerequisite without those requirements; some Mac owners may need no new hardware at all.
