A random wheel is more than a spinning graphic: it is a data model, a selection rule, an animation, and a result people need to understand and trust. The most important design lesson is to keep those jobs distinct. Define which entries are eligible and how their odds work, choose a result according to that rule, then animate the wheel to show it. Keyboard access, readable results, and clear saving and sharing behavior matter just as much as the spin.
What building a wheel tool actually involves
The title frames this as a first-person account, but the author’s code, implementation choices, and personal testing are not publicly established here. The practical lessons below are therefore grounded in documented wheel-tool examples and web-platform guidance, not claims about a particular project’s stack or test results.

A wheel has at least two separate jobs: select an entry and present that selection. The first job defines the tool’s behavior; the second makes the result visible and engaging. Treating them as separate decisions makes it easier to explain what the tool does and to check that its animation matches its selection rule.

Define the list rules
- Specify how pasted text becomes entries, including whether blank lines are ignored.
- Decide whether duplicate labels remain separate entries. If they do, the same displayed name may occupy more than one chance to win.
- Decide whether entries can be disabled, assigned weights, or removed after selection.
- Set expectations for large lists: a crowded wheel can become hard to read, so the import and result-display experience may need to work differently from the visual wheel.
These are real product distinctions, not merely implementation details. WheelToss documents paste/import, duplicate handling, weights, entry disabling, and winner removal as features of its tool. Wheel of Names documents weighted outcomes and a display limit for names. Those descriptions apply to those products, not to every wheel or to the tool named in the title. See the WheelToss wheel description and the Wheel of Names FAQ.
Make the odds understandable
“Random” does not tell users enough by itself. Explain which entries are eligible and whether each has the same chance. Equal odds mean each eligible entry is treated equally; weights deliberately change that. Duplicate entries also matter: if duplicates count separately, a repeated label has more representation than a label entered once.

Wheel of Names describes a default unbiased mode and an optional weighted mode. WheelToss describes weights and says duplicate entries count separately. These are examples of different, explicit rules—not an audit or guarantee about another tool.

Repeats are a rule choice
An independent draw can select the same entry again. That is expected when the wheel remains unchanged. If the intended activity is for each person to get one turn, the tool needs a no-repeat rule, such as removing the selected entry before the next draw. Wheel of Names recommends removing the winner to avoid a repeat; WheelToss documents both leaving the wheel unchanged and automatic removal. Make the chosen behavior visible rather than asking users to infer it.

Choose the result separately from animating it
A dramatic spin can make the interaction enjoyable, but it does not establish that a draw is fair. The selection rule determines the outcome; easing, duration, and frame rate determine how that outcome is shown.
WheelToss describes an implementation that selects the winner before the first animation frame, using crypto.getRandomValues() with rejection sampling to choose an index, then calculates a rotation that stops at the selected entry. Its description says animation settings affect presentation rather than the selected outcome. This is WheelToss’s account of its own approach, not independent verification or evidence that all wheels work this way. MDN documents Crypto.getRandomValues() as a web API for obtaining cryptographically strong random values: MDN: Crypto.getRandomValues().

For another possible rendering surface, MDN describes Canvas as an API for drawing graphics with scripting. A wheel could use Canvas for its slices while ordinary HTML controls handle list editing, the spin action, and the result text. The available sources do not establish which rendering or application architecture the title’s author used. See MDN: Canvas API.

Make the interaction work without a pointer
A spin control should be reachable and operable from a keyboard, and the selected name should be available as text. A result conveyed only by a slice’s color, position, or motion can be inaccessible to people who cannot perceive that visual cue.

WCAG 2.2’s keyboard guidance says functionality must be operable through a keyboard interface, subject to an exception for functions whose operation depends on the path of movement rather than just its endpoints. A wheel’s spin button is an ordinary actionable control, not a pointer-path interaction. This is a design implication of the criterion, not evidence that any named product has passed an accessibility audit. Read the W3C explanation of WCAG’s keyboard criterion.
Tell users what saving and sharing do
“Saved” and “shared” can mean different things: a file on the user’s device, browser-local state, cloud storage tied to an account, or a link that represents a particular list. Explain the actual behavior and its consequences instead of making a blanket privacy claim. Users need to know where their entries go, whether another device can access them, and whether editing a list changes an existing link.
Wheel of Names documents local and cloud saving as different options with different device-access and privacy implications; it also says a shared link is a snapshot, so changes require sharing again. WheelToss says its list stays in the browser and that sharing its tool link does not attach the user’s list. These are product-specific statements. They do not establish how another tool stores data, handles analytics, or creates share links. See the Wheel of Names FAQ and WheelToss’s description.

Match promises to the tool’s limits
Wheels are used for classroom activities, raffles, group decisions, and other situations where a visible choice is useful. The same interface may not suit every list size or every kind of decision. State what the tool supports and make constraints clear: a long list may need a more useful import path, a readable result view, or a different presentation than a densely packed wheel.
Wheel of Names documents a limit related to displaying names and a different import path for larger lists. That limit belongs to Wheel of Names and should not be presented as a limit of other tools. More broadly, a wheel’s output is only as meaningful as its entry rules, weights, and repeat behavior; it should not imply a stronger guarantee than those rules support.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for a wheel builder
- Define entry parsing, duplicate handling, eligibility, weights, and removal behavior.
- Describe the selection rule plainly, including exceptions to equal odds.
- Keep the selection decision distinct from the animation that presents it.
- Provide a keyboard-operable spin control and a text result.
- Explain where lists are stored and exactly what a shared link contains.
- State list-size or import constraints for the tool itself, not borrowed limits from another product.
