Building a Shopify theme from scratch is worthwhile when a store has requirements an existing theme cannot reasonably meet—and when the merchant is prepared to own the added implementation and maintenance work. It is not automatically faster, better-performing, or easier to maintain than starting with Dawn. Shopify supports both custom theme development and customization of existing themes; the right choice depends on the store’s needs and whether the theme is for one merchant or a Shopify Theme Store submission.
Why start with an original theme instead of Dawn?
The title describes a custom build, but it does not establish why Dawn was rejected, which features were implemented, or what the result achieved. Those details matter: a first-person account should explain the project’s actual requirements and trade-offs rather than imply that original code is inherently superior.

Shopify says developers can build themes from scratch, describing this as a major undertaking often commissioned by a single merchant with specific requirements. A bespoke build is most defensible when the store needs a distinct structure or behavior that would be difficult to achieve through reasonable customization. For a store whose needs fit an existing theme, customizing that theme may be the more direct route. Shopify’s overview of theme development and its customization guidance describe both paths.
When a custom build makes sense
- The merchant has specific storefront requirements that existing themes cannot reasonably satisfy.
- The project can support the additional work of building, validating, and maintaining its own theme architecture.
- The build is intended for a particular merchant rather than a Theme Store submission, or its starting codebase has been chosen to meet current submission rules.
When customizing an existing theme may be enough
- The required layouts and storefront behaviors are already available or can be implemented without a major rewrite.
- The merchant values a more established starting point over a bespoke architecture.
- The team wants to use an existing theme’s documented capabilities, while still checking that its apps and merchant settings work for the store.
“From scratch” does not have to mean no starter code
Shopify CLI’s shopify theme init command initializes a theme from a Git repository when one is specified. With no repository specified, it creates a copy of Shopify’s Skeleton theme. So “from scratch” can describe the original design and implementation without requiring developers to create every file from nothing. Shopify’s theme init documentation explains the command.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters when describing a build: identify the actual starting point. An original merchant theme initialized from Skeleton, a theme cloned from another repository, and a fork of Dawn are different development choices. The project title alone does not show which codebase or commands were used.
How a Shopify theme is organized
Shopify’s documented theme structure includes assets, blocks, config, layout, locales, sections, snippets, and templates. Shopify says a theme can be uploaded with only a layout directory containing theme.liquid, but that is a technical minimum—not a complete storefront. A useful theme needs the templates, settings, assets, markup, and features required for its purpose. Shopify’s theme architecture guide describes these directories.

For a custom build, the practical question is whether the merchant can manage the resulting store. Consider which settings should be editable in the theme editor, how templates accommodate the catalog, and whether required storefront features are built in. The title does not establish how this project handled those responsibilities, so claims about its implementation need to come from the project itself.

Shopify describes Dawn as its Online Store 2.0 reference theme and documents its support for app blocks. That provides a relevant point of comparison, but it does not show that every custom theme has the same compatibility. For an original build, check the merchant’s required apps, app blocks, app embed blocks, theme-editor settings, templates, and storefront behaviors rather than assuming they work.

Shopify’s theme app extensions let apps provide app blocks and app embed blocks without editing a theme’s code. Shopify says this avoids direct theme edits, reducing the risk of breaking changes and making integrations easier to iterate. Whether an integration works as expected still needs to be checked in the target storefront. Shopify’s theme app extensions documentation explains the framework.
A practical development and validation workflow
Shopify CLI is Shopify’s command-line tool for theme development. Its documented workflow supports development-theme previews, sharing, publishing, and Theme Check. Development themes can use data from the connected store for local testing, and Shopify documents real-time preview and hot reload for CSS and section changes. Shopify also says development themes are removed after seven days of inactivity, so they should not be treated as durable unpublished previews. Shopify CLI for themes covers these capabilities.

- Choose the destination and starting point. Decide whether the theme is for one merchant or a Theme Store submission, then select an appropriate codebase. Use
shopify theme initto initialize from Skeleton by default or clone a specified repository. - Build for the merchant’s actual requirements. Implement the needed templates, sections, settings, and storefront behaviors. Identify required app blocks and app embeds rather than assuming they will be compatible.
- Preview with store data. Use a Shopify CLI development theme to inspect the storefront against the connected store’s content and catalog. Use the preview and theme editor to check how sections and settings behave.
- Run Theme Check. Shopify CLI’s
theme checkanalyzes theme code for errors and theme and Liquid best practices. It is a code-analysis step, not proof of usability, accessibility, load performance, or compatibility with every app. Shopify’s theme command reference documents Theme Check. - Keep a durable preview if needed. Because development themes are removed after seven days of inactivity, use a durable unpublished theme when a preview must remain available beyond that lifecycle.
A Dawn fork and an original build have different Theme Store implications
For an ordinary merchant project, Shopify’s Theme Store submission rules should not be mistaken for a blanket ban on starting with Dawn. The destination changes the decision, however. Shopify’s current Theme Store requirements say Skeleton is the only approved codebase for Theme Store development; otherwise, themes must use fully original code. New submissions built on or derived from Dawn or Horizon are not eligible. The requirements also call for meaningful architectural distinction, not merely cosmetic or additive changes.

Those rules concern Theme Store submissions, not every theme built for an individual merchant. Since submission requirements can change, check Shopify’s live requirements before choosing a base for a prospective submission.

What this build story can—and cannot—claim
A custom theme can be the right choice for a store with specific requirements, but the title alone does not establish the project’s codebase, rationale, features, timeline, cost, or test results. It also provides no evidence of improved sales, speed, accessibility, security, or maintainability. A credible account should tie those claims to the project’s records and describe what was actually tested.
