Chrome’s capture APIs make some of those boundaries visible—and they also show why an extension can help only if it addresses the failure that actually happened.
What the screen-share disaster showed me
The incident made browsing feel less dependable than it looks. A tab is right there on screen, yet sharing it depends on the selected source, the permission path, and the software handling the stream. A failure at any one of those points can leave a presenter sharing the wrong thing—or nothing at all.

I built an extension in response. That is the personal account; the technical details below explain the available Chrome capture paths, not the specific cause of my failure or a claim that the extension solved it. Without knowing what failed or what the extension changed, it would be misleading to present the incident as proof that one API makes screen sharing reliable.
Chrome has distinct ways to capture a tab or screen
“Screen sharing” can describe different capture scopes. An extension that captures a tab is not using the same flow as one that asks the user to choose a window or an entire screen.

| Approach | Best suited to | What the user and extension must account for |
|---|---|---|
chrome.tabCapture |
Capturing a tab after the user invokes the extension for it | The extension needs the relevant permission, and access to the target tab is tied to activeTab. The user must invoke the extension. From Chrome 116, a service worker can request a stream ID after a user gesture and pass it to an offscreen document to obtain the media stream. Chrome’s tabCapture API reference and screen-capture guide describe the flow. |
chrome.desktopCapture |
Letting the user select a tab, window, or screen | Chrome opens a source picker. If the user cancels, the stream ID is empty; a successful ID is single-use and expires after a few seconds if it is not used. Chrome’s desktopCapture API reference documents the picker and stream-ID constraints. |
Website getDisplayMedia() |
Sharing initiated by a website, including in environments with organization-controlled rules | Chrome shows a browser chooser for website capture. Enterprise policy can restrict which sites are allowed to prompt. Chrome’s screen-capture guide and Chrome Enterprise policy reference cover these controls. |
Why an extension does not remove every failure point
Capture scope still matters
A tab-capture extension is appropriate when the intended source is the tab for which the user invoked it. If the needed source is another tab, a separate window, or the whole display, a picker-based flow may fit better. A smooth path for one scope does not establish that every kind of share will work.
User gestures and stream timing are part of the flow
tabCapture is gated by user invocation, and the target tab must be eligible for activeTab access. With desktopCapture, the user’s choice produces a short-lived, single-use stream ID. Code that asks for a stream and then delays its use can miss that window. These are workflow constraints, not evidence of a browser defect.

Chrome version can change the implementation
Chrome 116 introduced a supported Manifest V3 pattern in which a service worker requests a tab-capture stream ID following a user gesture and passes it to an offscreen document to obtain the media stream. Earlier Chrome versions require a different arrangement. An extension’s compatibility therefore depends on the version and capture design, not just whether it is installed. Chrome’s screen-capture guide explains the version-specific flow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOrganization policy can override the expected prompt
On ChromeOS and Chrome for Windows, Mac, and Linux, enterprise policy can block website prompts for tab, window, or screen sharing, or allow selected sites. That control is separate from an extension’s own capture logic. If a share prompt is missing in a work-managed browser, the administrator’s policy may be relevant; changing extension code alone would not address that restriction. Chrome Enterprise’s policy reference describes the site controls.

Permissions are a trust decision, not a formality
Chrome presents users with permission warnings. Its warning for desktopCapture says “Capture content of your screen”; its warning for tabCapture refers to reading and changing data on websites. Those warnings should be explained in the extension’s context, not waved away as harmless. A user should be able to understand why the extension requests a permission and what capture scope it enables. Chrome’s permission-warning reference lists the wording.
How to investigate a share failure before changing code
- Identify the failing stage. Note whether the browser chooser appeared, whether the intended source was selectable, whether capture began, and whether the meeting software received the stream. These observations separate a missing prompt from a selected-source problem or a downstream meeting-app issue.
- Record the source and capture path. Establish whether the share was launched by a website or an extension, and whether the intended source was a tab, window, or full screen. Those paths use different permission and selection flows.
- Check the browser context. Record the Chrome version and whether the browser is managed by an organization. For managed Chrome, ask an administrator whether screen-capture policy restricts the site.
- Match the implementation to the need. Use tab capture for a user-invoked extension action targeting an eligible tab; use a picker when the user must choose among tabs, windows, or screens. For Manifest V3 tab recording, account for the Chrome 116 service-worker-to-offscreen-document flow or the different arrangement needed by older versions.
- Explain and minimize permissions. Connect each requested permission to a concrete feature and capture scope, and ensure users can make an informed choice before invoking capture.
This checklist identifies which layer to investigate; it cannot establish what caused my own incident. That requires the actual failure details and evidence from the extension’s behavior.
