I Built a CBT Thought Journal in 50 Lines of Python: What It Does—and What It Doesn’t

The tutorial’s Python script is an internet-connected keyword-matching demo, not a private local journal or a full CBT thought record. Here’s how to use its output cautiously and what a complete reflection includes.

A 50-line Python script can demonstrate a useful idea: enter a thought, get prompts that may help you reflect on it. But the tutorial’s program is a small command-line client for a remote keyword-matching service—not a private, local-only journal or a complete CBT thought record. It sends the thought you enter to an analyzer endpoint, and its labels are not established as clinically validated assessments.

What the 50-line Python CBT thought journal actually does

The DEV Community tutorial describes a short script built with Python’s requests, datetime, and json modules. It sends a thought in an HTTP POST request to a hosted analyzer, then displays the submitted text, a timestamp, and returned distortion names, confidence values, and reframing prompts. A separate endpoint is used for procrastination patterns. The examples also loop through hard-coded sample thoughts. Read the DEV Community tutorial.

That makes the program an API-powered demonstration, not a persistent journal app: the shown code does not provide a user interface, save entries for later, or analyze everything locally. Its timestamp comes from datetime.now() and is formatted to the date and minute without explicitly setting a timezone. It also needs an internet connection and relies on the remote service being available; the tutorial does not establish the endpoint’s current uptime.

What the author says the analyzer covers

The tutorial says its analyzer uses keyword pattern matching rather than an AI model, and claims support for 11 cognitive distortions, 8 procrastination patterns, and 4 attachment styles. It also says the method is based on David Burns’ Feeling Good framework. Those are the author’s descriptions. The material available does not establish that the categories or returned confidence values have been independently tested, clinically validated, or shown to be reliable for assessing an individual.

A confidence value from this demo should not be read as a validated probability, diagnosis, or proof that a thought is distorted. A careful interpretation is: the tool looks for selected words and returns matching prompts that you can choose to consider.

How this differs from a CBT thought record

NHS Every Mind Matters calls a thought record “a common cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) exercise.” Its seven prompts guide a person through the situation, initial feelings, unhelpful thoughts, evidence supporting the thought, evidence against it, a more realistic or neutral alternative, and feelings after the exercise. See the NHS thought record exercise.

The distinction matters: the tutorial’s described operation returns labels and prompts from a pattern-matching endpoint. That is not the full seven-prompt reflection. In particular, a returned label cannot replace your own consideration of what happened, what supports the thought, what does not, and what alternative account feels fair. To make a journal that follows the NHS exercise, include each prompt and let the person supply their own answers rather than treating the analyzer’s output as a conclusion.

A complete seven-prompt thought record

  1. Situation: What happened, where were you, and who was involved?
  2. Initial feelings: What emotions did you notice, and how intense were they?
  3. Unhelpful thoughts: What went through your mind at the time?
  4. Evidence supporting the thought: What facts seem to support it?
  5. Evidence against the thought: What facts or context point another way?
  6. More realistic or neutral alternative: What is a balanced way to describe the situation?
  7. Feelings afterward: What do you feel now, after working through the record?

A Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust worksheet likewise asks people to note a situation and initial thought, consider consequences, and challenge the thought with supporting and opposing facts. Its December 2023 worksheet advises using it with guidance from a health professional. View the worksheet.

Privacy: the demonstrated script sends thoughts to a server

The code’s HTTP POST sends the entered thought as JSON to the hosted analyzer endpoint shown in the tutorial. The service therefore receives the text for analysis. That data flow conflicts with the tutorial’s separate claim that thoughts are not sent to a company’s servers; the code, as demonstrated, is not local-only.

The material available does not establish the host’s retention policy, access controls, encryption configuration, or current service terms. If you would not want a thought transmitted to a third-party service, do not enter it into this version. Use paper or an offline document instead, or change the implementation to use an analysis method that keeps the text on your device and verify that it makes no network requests.

Choosing a format for your thought record

The NHS says a thought record can be completed on paper, in an app, in an electronic document, or on a printed sheet. The practical choice depends on where your notes go, whether you can revisit them, whether you need internet access, and whether the format walks you through all the prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Format Where the text goes Revisiting entries Internet needed Full prompts
Paper or printed worksheet On the page you keep Keep the page for later review No Depends on the worksheet; the NHS worksheet provides the seven prompts
Electronic document Depends on the device, app, and storage settings you choose Save and organize files for later Not necessarily You can include all seven prompts
App Depends on the app and its data practices Depends on the app’s features Depends on the app Depends on the app
Tutorial’s Python demo The entered thought is sent to the hosted analyzer The shown code does not implement persistent journal storage Yes; it makes network calls Not as described; it returns labels and prompts rather than the full seven-prompt record

For any app or service, check its own privacy information and storage behavior rather than assuming that “journal” means private or offline.

Using the script responsibly

  • Treat matching labels and reframing suggestions as optional reflection cues, not clinical findings.
  • Do the evidence-for and evidence-against work yourself; a word match cannot establish whether a thought is true or useful.
  • Do not enter sensitive thoughts into the demonstrated hosted version unless you are comfortable sending them to that service.
  • If your goal is a complete thought record, provide all seven prompts and a way to keep the resulting entries.

CBT is a talking therapy in which a therapist helps people change how they think and act. NHS guidance notes that people may practise between sessions and record progress in a worksheet or diary. A small script can support learning or reflection, but it is not a replacement for a therapist, diagnosis, or treatment. Read the NHS guide to CBT. If you need help, the NHS page explains routes to talking therapies and urgent help.

Further reading

The tutorial names David Burns’ Feeling Good as background for its approach. It is optional reading, not a requirement to run the script or an endorsement by the NHS.
