I Added an SSD Cache to My NAS—Would More RAM Have Helped?

An SSD cache is not a universal NAS speed boost. Match the upgrade to the workload, check for memory pressure, and confirm your model's support before buying more hardware.

Possibly—but the title alone does not establish that RAM would have fixed this NAS. Memory and SSD cache address different bottlenecks, and a cache can disappoint when the workload does not repeatedly read small, randomly located data. Before buying another component, identify what was slow, check whether the NAS was short on memory or storage I/O, and verify what the exact model supports.

Why an SSD cache may not have helped

An SSD cache is workload-dependent, not a general-purpose speed upgrade. Synology says it can help when I/O frequently revisits randomly placed data. It also cautions that benefits are limited for large sequential read/write operations—such as HD video streaming—and entirely random data reads. See Synology’s DSM 7 SSD Cache help.

That distinction matters in practice: repeatedly opening or updating a relatively small set of files may suit caching better than copying a large video file, streaming media, or reading unrelated data that is unlikely to be reused. The word “SSD” alone does not tell you whether the cache matches your work.

RAM and SSD cache address different constraints

More RAM may be the right upgrade if the NAS is demonstrably memory-constrained and its model supports a memory upgrade. An SSD cache is intended to improve certain storage I/O patterns. Neither the Synology nor QNAP documentation establishes that RAM is universally better than cache, or that either upgrade guarantees a particular performance gain.

There is also a practical interaction: creating a cache can itself require system memory. Synology’s DSM 7.1 SSD Cache White Paper estimates approximately 400 KB of system memory per 1 GB of SSD cache and says cache creation is limited to up to one-quarter of pre-installed memory. Those are DSM 7.1-specific configuration figures, not performance benchmarks or rules for every NAS. QNAP’s QTS 5.0.x guidance uses different thresholds: for QTS 5.0.0 and later, its table lists 2 GB of RAM for a 1 TB SSD cache and 4 GB for a 4 TB cache. Do not apply those QTS figures to other software versions or manufacturers. See QNAP’s SSD cache memory requirements.

How to decide what to check before upgrading again

  1. Pin down the slow task. Note what you were doing and when it felt slow: for example, working with frequently reused small files, running a virtual machine or database, backing up data, or transferring large media files. The workload pattern helps distinguish storage I/O from a general memory constraint.
  2. Check for evidence of memory pressure. Look at the NAS’s memory-use and system-monitoring information while the slow task is happening. High memory use by itself does not prove that a RAM upgrade will solve the problem; identify whether memory pressure coincides with the slowdown and check the model’s supported memory options.
  3. Estimate the hot-data working set before sizing cache. A larger cache is not automatically a faster cache. Synology recommends sizing around frequently accessed data and warns that excess capacity does not guarantee better performance. Its SSD Cache Advisor needs at least seven days for its initial analysis and ends automatically after 30 days, according to Synology’s 2024 guidance. Treat that as a way to inform sizing, not as a promise of a speed increase.
  4. Verify model and component compatibility. Check the exact NAS model, operating-system version, supported memory upgrades, and the manufacturer’s SSD compatibility guidance. Synology recommends using listed compatible SSDs; its SSD compatibility list is model-specific.
  5. Check the cache mode before changing or removing it. Read-only cache stores copies of data, while read-write cache may hold new writes before they are synchronized to storage. Follow the instructions for the specific model and cache/volume status rather than assuming removal is risk-free; Synology’s SSD cache failure guidance describes recovery steps based on those conditions.

What the experience can—and cannot—show

Without the NAS model, DSM or QTS version, workload, symptoms, and before-and-after measurements, it is not possible to verify that extra RAM would have solved this particular problem. The useful takeaway is narrower: an SSD cache can be a poor fit for sequential or non-repeating data, and limited memory can constrain cache setup. Diagnose the bottleneck and confirm model-specific support before spending more.
