A meaningful ranking needs to separate the signal used to pick models from what happened when each one was prepared, sliced, and printed on a particular machine.
The available information does not identify which Thingiverse models were printed or provide print notes, settings, or results. Naming “winners” or claiming firsthand outcomes would therefore be misleading. Here is how to read a popularity-based shortlist—and what a credible hands-on ranking needs to show.

What “top Thingiverse models” means
Thingiverse offers distinct discovery views, including Popular, Newest, Most Makes, Fresh Makes, Exclusive, and New, as well as time filters such as All Time, 7 Days, 30 Days, and This Year. Those choices can produce different shortlists, and the lists change over time. A ranking should name the filter and period used, ideally with the date checked. Thingiverse search
These signals are not interchangeable: likes, collections, and makes indicate attention or activity, not ease of printing, surface quality, usefulness, or reliability. Popularity can help select candidates; the print assessment must come from the model’s geometry and the author’s observed results.

What a firsthand ranking should disclose
To compare models fairly, report the actual Thingiverse page and creator, the file or customized version used, and the selection filter and period. Then give the printer and nozzle, filament, layer height or profile, orientation, support setting, and any observed print duration or material use. Include cleanup, fit or function, finish, and failed attempts only when those details were recorded.
- Setup effort: Whether the file printed as downloaded or required reorientation, supports, customization, or assembly.
- Printability: Whether the slicer preview showed floating regions, small bed-contact areas, or other geometry that could complicate printing.
- Finish: How visible supported surfaces and fine details looked, and how much cleanup was needed.
- Usefulness or delight: Whether the finished object did what its design page promises—an assessment that requires examining the actual print.
- Repeatability: Enough hardware and settings detail for readers to understand the result’s limits. One printer’s success does not establish universal reliability.
Without identified models and recorded outcomes, there is no supported basis for a model-by-model ranking here. The criteria above make clear what evidence would substantiate one.

From Thingiverse file to printable instructions
A downloadable model is not yet a printer-ready job. Prusa Research’s First print with PrusaSlicer (3.0.0) explains that a model is imported into a slicer, oriented, supported where needed, sliced, checked in preview, and exported. The guide states: “Before printing your 3D file, it needs to be converted into a file type called .gcode or .bgcode.” Know your printer model, nozzle size, and filament before choosing a profile; the resulting instructions depend on those particulars.
Prusa recommends starting with a balanced profile in that guide. Thinner layers can capture more detail but take longer, so a comparison should use and disclose the profile actually chosen rather than treating a setting as universally best.

Orientation and supports
A layer that begins in mid-air needs support. Prusa advises considering a different orientation or splitting a model to reduce support requirements. Support count alone is not a complete measure: supported faces may look different from surfaces printed against the bed, and support removal can add cleanup. Choose filament for the object, not the popularity list
PLA is one of the easier materials to print and suits many detailed decorative models and quick prototypes. It is not a universal choice for parts exposed to high temperatures, chemicals, or substantial mechanical stress. Prusa’s material guidance points to PC, ASA, PETG, or similar materials as possibilities for outdoor or mechanically stressed parts, while noting that they may not reproduce small details as well as PLA. Temperature settings are not portable defaults across machines and filaments. For example, Prusa’s MINI-specific PLA article lists 215 °C for the first layer, 210 °C for later layers, and a 60 °C bed recommendation for that context. How to find candidates for your own print queue
- Choose a discovery view and period. On Thingiverse search, select the signal—such as Popular or Most Makes—and time range relevant to your goal. Record the date, since results can change.
- Inspect the individual Thing page. Check its files, creator, description, available customization, and license. If you use Thingiverse Customizer, record the options or dimensions used; its workflow is to customize, create a Thing, then download, print, and share. Thingiverse Customizer
- Prepare it for your machine. Import the model into a compatible slicer, set the printer and filament profile, choose orientation and supports, slice, and inspect the preview before exporting the printer instructions.
- Judge the physical result against stated criteria. Note setup, supports, cleanup, finish, and function. Keep the printer and settings alongside observations so readers can tell what the result does—and does not—show.
