Choose Minecraft if your priority is the most mature ecosystem, broadest host support, and free official server software. Self-host Hytale only when you are comfortable with Java 25, UDP/QUIC firewall rules, backups, updates, and capacity tuning. The right answer depends less on a headline RAM number than on view distance, independently loaded world area, player behavior, and whether your host properly supports Hytale’s networking.
Quick verdict: Hytale or Minecraft?
| Choose Hytale when… | Choose Minecraft when… |
|---|---|
| You want Hytale’s newer world simulation, building tools, and gameplay systems. | Your group already has an established Java or Bedrock world and mod/plugin routine. |
| You are willing to use a managed host or administer Java 25 and QUIC over UDP yourself. | You want free official Java or Bedrock server software and the widest range of hosting choices. |
| You can budget for a paid server and verify UDP port 5520 support, backups, and export. | You need the most predictable compatibility with existing clients, maps, and community tools. |
| Your group values a longer view distance and Hytale’s distinctive simulation, while accepting higher operational complexity. | You prefer a mature ecosystem with well-understood performance tuning and administration. |
There is no universal “best” host. A good decision matches the game’s network protocol, memory behavior, support model, and renewal price to the way your group actually plays.

What a Hytale server requires in 2026
Minimum software and memory
Hypixel Studios’ Hytale Server Manual, updated October 12, 2026, states that “The Hytale server can run on any device with at least 4GB of memory and Java 25.” That is a minimum baseline, not a promise that every world or player count will run comfortably at 4GB. Consumption changes with player behavior, entities, the amount of world loaded at once, and view distance.
When comparing plans, treat 4GB as the starting point for an installation that can launch, not as guaranteed headroom for a busy community. Ask the host whether the advertised memory is dedicated to your instance, whether the panel or operating system consumes part of it, and whether you can increase it without rebuilding the world.

View distance is the major memory lever
The manual identifies view distance as the main driver of RAM usage and recommends limiting maximum view distance to 12 chunks, or 384 blocks. Hytale’s default 384-block distance is roughly equivalent to 24 Minecraft chunks. Minecraft’s default is 10 chunks, or 160 blocks. With comparable player activity, Hytale can therefore keep a substantially larger area active at its defaults.
Lowering view distance is often the first capacity adjustment when memory use rises. It reduces how much terrain and simulation must remain active, but it also changes what players can see. Make the change in a quiet period, observe memory and tick behavior, and document the value so a later update does not silently restore a more demanding setting.
Network protocol and port
Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, not TCP. Its default port is 5520. A firewall, DDoS service, router, or hosting panel designed around TCP-only game assumptions can leave a server unreachable even when its CPU and RAM are adequate.
- Confirm that inbound and outbound UDP traffic is allowed for port 5520.
- Check that the provider’s public address and panel expose UDP, not merely a TCP port field.
- Verify that any reverse proxy, firewall rule, or DDoS layer understands game traffic carried by QUIC.
- Test from a network outside the server’s local network; a local connection can hide port-forwarding errors.
What Minecraft requires in 2026
Official software is free
Mojang says the official Minecraft server software for both Java and Bedrock is free to download from the Minecraft website. Java requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment. Bedrock server software runs on supported Windows or Linux systems. The software being free does not make the server free to operate: you still provide hardware or hosting, bandwidth, storage, backups, security, and administration.
Java and Bedrock are different server choices
Java and Bedrock are separate server editions with different client compatibility and administration expectations. Decide which edition your players use before selecting a host. Remote players may need port forwarding; Java servers commonly use port 25565, while the exact port and firewall rules depend on your configuration and provider.
Minecraft’s long-established ecosystem generally makes version selection, world tools, plugins, mods, and troubleshooting easier to find. That maturity is the strongest practical reason to choose Minecraft when your group does not specifically need Hytale.

Managed hosting versus self-hosting
Managed Hytale hosting
A managed provider normally supplies the server installation, control panel, networking, backups, and routine maintenance. This is the easiest way to keep a persistent Hytale world online if you do not want to administer Java 25, QUIC firewall rules, updates, and recovery procedures yourself.
“Managed” does not mean every operational task disappears. You should still confirm the exact backup schedule, retention period, restore process, downloadable file export, resource upgrade path, and response times for support. Read the renewal price and refund terms rather than relying on a first-month promotion.
DIY Hytale hosting
Self-hosting is suitable for a technically confident operator who can maintain the machine and the network. Your checklist includes installing Java 25, obtaining the official Hytale server files, opening UDP port 5520, applying updates, restricting administrative access, creating and testing backups, monitoring memory and CPU, and tuning view distance as the world grows.
DIY can make sense when you already own reliable hardware and a suitable connection, need full control over files and updates, or want to integrate the server with your own monitoring and backup systems. It is a poor fit when the server must be available continuously but nobody is prepared to respond to outages, security issues, or a failed update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Managed Minecraft hosting
Minecraft benefits from a much larger selection of managed hosts and established control panels. The same questions still matter: whether memory is dedicated, how backups are retained, whether you can download your world, which Java or Bedrock versions are supported, and how mod or plugin files are changed. The mature ecosystem lowers friction, but it does not remove the need to verify the provider’s actual limits.
RAM, CPU, and world-load planning
Use the minimum as a floor, not a target
Hytale’s official floor is 4GB. The manual does not give a universal “RAM per player” formula because player behavior, entities, loaded area, and view distance vary. A quiet four-player world and a world full of moving entities can have very different requirements.

For either game, leave memory headroom for bursts rather than sizing to the average reading. Watch sustained usage during exploration, construction, and peak activity. If memory remains near its limit, reduce view distance or other load drivers before adding players. If the server pauses while one CPU core is saturated, adding RAM alone will not solve the problem.
Single-core performance and entities
Game servers commonly depend heavily on fast single-core CPU performance for simulation ticks. Entity counts, redstone-like mechanisms, farms, mobs, physics, and automation can create more load than a simple player-count estimate suggests. Ask a host what CPU model or performance class is allocated, whether neighboring instances can contend for CPU time, and whether the plan has a documented CPU limit.
Independently loaded world area
The number of players is only a proxy for active world area. Ten players spread across separate regions can force more chunks or terrain sectors to remain active than ten players standing together. Exploration also creates new generation and storage activity. Set a conservative initial view distance, pre-plan storage growth, and review metrics after real play sessions rather than extrapolating from the first login.
Networking, latency, and availability
Hytale’s UDP/QUIC requirement
Because Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, confirm this capability before paying. Ask support specifically whether inbound UDP port 5520 is available, whether the address is dedicated or shared, and whether DDoS protection preserves QUIC traffic. A host that advertises “game hosting” but only documents TCP forwarding may not be suitable.
Minecraft’s familiar port model
Minecraft Java commonly uses TCP port 25565, and many routers and firewalls include examples for it. That familiarity simplifies setup, but latency still depends on distance, routing, congestion, and the provider’s peering. Bedrock uses its own supported configuration, so verify the edition’s current port requirements with the host and software documentation.
Choose a nearby datacenter
Place the server close to the majority of players. A nearby region usually reduces round-trip latency and makes movement and block interaction feel more responsive. If your group spans continents, select the region that serves the largest or most active segment, or consider separate worlds rather than assuming a distant “central” location will be equally good for everyone.

Price comparison: dated examples, not guarantees
The following figures were advertised on August 2, 2026 by a Hytale hosting price comparison. They are examples only; region, taxes, promotions, billing cycle, and renewal terms can change.
| Provider | Advertised configuration | Price shown | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shockbyte | 5GB plan for four players | $12.50 per month | Dated advertised price; verify current renewal and regional terms. |
| Apex Hosting | 4GB plan | $11.24 first month; $14.99 recurring | Introductory price followed by the stated recurring rate. |
| GPORTAL | 4GB plan | $10.08 per 30 days promotional; $13.44 regular | Promotion and regular price were both listed; availability can change. |
| DatHost | 16GB plan | €14.90 monthly; €6.90/month equivalent when billed yearly | Annual-equivalent figure requires yearly billing. |
These numbers do not establish that one provider is faster, more reliable, or cheaper for your location. Before ordering, check the renewal amount, taxes, currency conversion, refund window, backup inclusion, storage limits, CPU allocation, UDP/QUIC support, and whether you can export the complete world and configuration.
What to verify before choosing a Hytale host
- Protocol support: Get written confirmation that UDP port 5520 and QUIC are supported end to end.
- Memory policy: Determine whether the advertised RAM is dedicated, how much the panel consumes, and whether upgrades are immediate.
- Backups: Check frequency, retention, off-site storage, restore steps, and whether you can download a copy.
- File access: Confirm access to world files, logs, configuration, and server versions so you are not locked into one panel.
- Update controls: Ask whether updates can be staged, rolled back, or scheduled outside your group’s play time.
- Support: Test a pre-sales question about QUIC rather than judging support from a marketing badge.
- Datacenter: Select the closest practical region and check whether the IP is shared.
- Security: Understand DDoS coverage, account protection, firewall controls, and who handles emergency patches.
Step-by-step: starting a managed Hytale server
- Select a region and plan. Choose a datacenter near your players and at least the official 4GB baseline. Treat the baseline as a launch floor, not guaranteed capacity.
- Confirm UDP/QUIC before payment. Verify port 5520, QUIC handling, DDoS compatibility, and whether the address is reachable from external networks.
- Install the Hytale server through the panel. Use the provider’s Hytale installation option and select the supported Java 25 runtime if the panel exposes a runtime selector.
- Set an initial view distance. Keep the maximum at or below the manual’s recommended 12 chunks (384 blocks) until you have observed real memory use.
- Configure access and administration. Use unique credentials, restrict panel permissions, and grant operator rights only to people who need them.
- Make and test a backup. Create a backup before inviting players, download an export if available, and perform a test restore or document the provider’s restore procedure.
- Connect from outside the host network. Test the public address and port 5520 with at least one player on a different connection.
- Observe the first sessions. Watch memory, CPU, storage, disconnects, and logs during exploration and peak activity. Adjust view distance or upgrade resources based on those observations.
Step-by-step: self-hosting Hytale
- Prepare supported hardware. Use a device with at least 4GB of memory and Java 25, while reserving additional headroom for the operating system and the workload.
- Install Java 25. Confirm that the server process uses the intended Java 25 runtime rather than an older system installation.
- Obtain the official server software. Follow Hypixel Studios’ current Hytale Server Manual for the server package and first-launch configuration.
- Open the correct firewall path. Permit UDP traffic on the default port 5520. Do not create only a TCP rule.
- Configure the router if necessary. Forward UDP 5520 to the server’s fixed local address and test from an external network.
- Set conservative world settings. Keep maximum view distance at or below 12 chunks while you establish a baseline for memory and CPU use.
- Automate backups. Keep multiple dated copies on storage separate from the live server and periodically verify that a copy can be restored.
- Harden administration. Restrict panel or shell access, update the operating system and server software, and avoid exposing unnecessary services to the internet.
- Monitor capacity. Record memory, CPU, storage, tick behavior, and network errors during representative play. Increase resources or reduce active-world demands before the server becomes unstable.
Step-by-step: starting a Minecraft server
- Choose Java or Bedrock. Match the server edition to the clients your group owns and the mods, plugins, or add-ons you plan to use.
- Download the official software. Mojang provides the official Java and Bedrock server software free to download. Install the compatible runtime and supported operating system for your edition.
- Choose hosted or local hardware. A managed host simplifies networking and backups; a self-hosted machine requires you to provide both.
- Set the network path. For Java, port forwarding commonly uses TCP 25565, subject to your configuration. Confirm the current Bedrock requirements for that edition.
- Secure and back up the world. Restrict operator permissions, keep dated world copies, and test restoration before making the server public.
- Install extensions carefully. Add mods, plugins, or add-ons only after checking their game version and server-edition compatibility. Keep a clean backup before each change.
- Measure real load. Explore, generate terrain, and reproduce peak activity before deciding whether the machine has enough CPU, RAM, and storage.
Backups, updates, and file ownership
A persistent world is an operational responsibility regardless of game. Backups should cover the world, configuration, permissions, and any mod or plugin data required to rebuild the server. Retain more than one restore point and keep at least one copy outside the live machine or hosting account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ask whether a provider’s backup is a snapshot you can download or merely an internal recovery feature. A downloadable export gives you an exit path if prices rise, support deteriorates, or you decide to move from managed hosting to your own hardware. Schedule updates when players are offline, take a backup first, and know how to return to the previous working version if an update breaks the world.
Mods, plugins, and version control
Minecraft’s established mod and plugin ecosystem is a practical advantage: administrators can usually find documentation, compatibility notes, and migration guidance for common server versions. Hytale’s ecosystem is newer, so confirm which extensions are supported by the exact server build and whether the host’s panel lets you manage them without overwriting configuration.
Keep a written record of the game version, runtime version, extensions, configuration changes, and backup dates. This simple inventory makes troubleshooting and migration possible when several administrators share a server.
Best Value
Monetization and operator responsibilities
Hytale’s EULA places infrastructure costs on the operator, including hosting, bandwidth, storage, security, and related services. It does not guarantee uptime or support for third-party hosting. If you charge players, disclose prices and terms truthfully and comply with applicable gambling, random-item, advertising, and consumer-protection rules.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Those obligations are separate from the technical choice between managed and DIY hosting. A paid host can reduce maintenance work, but it does not transfer responsibility for what your server sells or how it treats players. Keep transaction records, publish clear terms, and obtain local legal advice for monetization that involves chance, prizes, or minors.
Troubleshooting decision table
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| Hytale server is online in the panel but nobody can join. | Confirm UDP rather than TCP, port 5520, router forwarding, host firewall rules, public address, and any QUIC-aware DDoS or proxy layer. |
| Hytale runs out of memory after exploration. | Reduce maximum view distance toward 12 chunks or lower, check independently loaded areas and entities, and review whether the plan’s advertised RAM is shared or partly consumed by the panel. |
| Players report pauses while CPU is not fully used overall. | Check single-core saturation, entity-heavy areas, and per-process CPU limits; overall average CPU can hide one overloaded core. |
| Minecraft players cannot connect remotely. | Verify the edition, listening address, firewall, router forwarding, and the commonly used Java port 25565 where applicable. |
| A restore does not reproduce the original server. | Back up configuration, permissions, extensions, and world data together; confirm that the target game and runtime versions match. |
| Monthly cost jumps after the first bill. | Compare the renewal price, billing cycle, taxes, currency, and annual commitment before purchasing a promotional plan. |
Which option fits common groups?
A small private group with little technical experience
Managed hosting is usually the sensible Hytale choice. You pay for convenience and support while avoiding direct QUIC and backup administration. Select a modest plan, keep view distance conservative, and verify that every player can connect before expanding the world.
A technical community that wants control
DIY Hytale can work if someone owns the Java 25, UDP firewall, security, monitoring, and recovery tasks. Use managed hosting instead if uptime matters more than control or the operator cannot provide coverage when the server fails.
A long-running Minecraft community
Minecraft remains the lower-friction option when your community relies on existing Java or Bedrock worlds, mods, plugins, and established administrative knowledge. Free official software also makes a self-hosted trial inexpensive, although hardware, bandwidth, and maintenance still cost money.
A public or monetized server
Choose the platform your moderation, compliance, backup, and support processes can actually sustain. For Hytale, document the EULA-related infrastructure and monetization responsibilities before accepting payments. For either game, prioritize exportable backups, reliable support, security controls, and a clear update policy over a temporary discount.
Final decision framework
Pick Hytale when its game design is the reason your group is moving and you accept either managed hosting or the technical work of self-hosting. Pick Minecraft when ecosystem maturity, free official software, broad host choice, and familiar administration outweigh the appeal of a newer platform. Whichever you select, verify the protocol, choose a nearby region, budget using the renewal price, and test a real backup before inviting a larger community.
