In Hytale, leather comes from processing animal hides at a Tanning Rack. Hunt the animal group that drops the tier you need—small animals for light hide, predators for medium hide, and large or armoured beasts for heavy hide—then tan the hides before using the finished leather for equipment, weapons, and backpack upgrades.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The most dependable method is targeted hunting followed by rack processing. Ruin and structure chests can contain leather, but their contents are random, so treat chest finds as a bonus rather than a farming plan.

Leather is not normally a direct field drop. Animals provide hides, and the Tanning Rack converts those hides into usable leather. The tier of the finished material follows the tier of the hide: light hide becomes light leather, medium hide becomes medium leather, and heavy hide becomes heavy leather.
This creates a simple production loop:
- Choose the recipe, armor piece, weapon, or backpack upgrade you are working toward.
- Identify the leather tier that recipe requires.
- Hunt animals associated with that tier and collect their hides.
- Put the hides into a Tanning Rack.
- Collect the processed leather and use it at the appropriate crafting station.
That order matters because hunting without a target can leave you with a large stock of the wrong tier while the material you actually need remains unavailable.

Leather tiers and the animals that provide them
| Tier | Typical hide sources | Typical role | Practical priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Small animals such as boars, cows, and sheep | Early crafting and lower-tier equipment | Build your first rack and supply basic recipes |
| Medium | Predators such as wolves, sabretooth, and hyenas | Progression equipment and the first backpack expansion | Farm deliberately when inventory capacity becomes a bottleneck |
| Heavy | Large or armoured beasts, including bears and mosshorns | Later progression and advanced upgrades | Save hunting time for a Tier 3 progression goal |
The animal examples above are the groupings reported by PC Gamer. Creature availability and recipe details can change as Hytale is updated, so use the hide or leather name shown by the current in-game tooltip as the final authority.
How to get leather step by step
1. Pick a specific material goal
Open the recipe or upgrade you intend to craft and note whether it calls for light, medium, or heavy leather. This prevents a common waste of time: hunting easy-to-find animals for light hide when the progression item requires medium or heavy leather.
For a new character, light leather is usually the sensible first target because the Tanning Rack itself uses light hide. Once the rack is built, switch your hunting route to the tier required by your next equipment or inventory upgrade.
2. Hunt the matching animal group
For light hide, look for small livestock and similar creatures such as boars, cows, and sheep. Medium hide is associated with predators, including wolves, sabretooth, and hyenas. Heavy hide comes from larger or armoured creatures such as bears and mosshorns.
Do not assume that every creature in a biome drops the same tier. Verify the item that appears in your inventory after a kill, then continue with that animal group. If the drop is not the tier named by your recipe, change targets instead of filling your inventory with unusable hides.
3. Collect enough hide for a complete rack cycle
Gather hides in batches rather than returning to the rack after every kill. A batch lets you begin processing and then return to the field while the rack works. Keep the three tiers separated in your storage so you can see which material is ready for the next recipe.

4. Build and place a Tanning Rack
PC Gamer reports this recipe for the Tanning Rack:
| Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tree trunks | 6 |
| Stone | 3 |
| Light hide | 3 |
Gather the ingredients, craft the rack, and place it where you can reach it while making regular resource runs. A location near your storage and other crafting stations reduces repeated trips, but do not block the rack with building pieces or place it somewhere you cannot safely access.
5. Load hides and start processing
Interact with the rack, select the hide type you want to process, and start the job. The reported processing time is at least about 30 seconds per cycle. The exact output quantity and any changes to the recipe should be read from the current rack interface; do not rely on an old recipe list if the game has been patched.
6. Use the waiting time productively
While the rack processes leather, gather tree trunks and stone for the next crafting task, mine the ore needed by your equipment recipe, or hunt the next animal group. Standing beside the rack until the timer ends is inefficient because the processing delay is designed to run alongside other activities.
7. Collect the finished leather before changing materials
Take completed leather out of the rack before switching to another tier. A level-one rack can hold only two different hide or leather types at once, according to PC Gamer. That limit concerns different material types, not simply the number of individual pieces, so avoid filling both available type slots with materials you are not ready to process.

Tanning Rack limits and queue management
The rack is the step that controls the pace of leather production. Its reported baseline is at least about 30 seconds of processing, and the level-one version has a two-type storage limit. Those constraints affect how you should organize a farming session.
- Process one immediate goal first. If you need medium leather for a backpack expansion, load medium hide before experimenting with light or heavy materials.
- Keep a reserve outside the rack. Store extra hides in a chest so the two-type limit does not force you to discard or prematurely process a tier.
- Batch the same type. A single uninterrupted run is easier to monitor than repeatedly starting one small job.
- Check the timer before leaving. Start the rack, note the expected completion, and choose a nearby task that can be finished during that interval.
- Do not infer faster output from a larger animal. The available evidence establishes the rack’s processing delay, not a different timer for each creature or leather tier.
If a later Hytale version changes rack capacity, recipe costs, or processing time, the current in-game rack panel should override older guides.

Hunting versus chest exploration
| Method | Reliability | Tier control | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Targeted animal hunting | More reliable when you need a known tier | You choose the animal group associated with light, medium, or heavy hide | Planned crafting and upgrades | Requires combat, travel, and rack processing |
| Ruin or structure chests | Inconsistent; leather may or may not appear | No guarantee of the tier you need | Bonus materials during exploration | Random loot cannot support a precise farming schedule |
Old ruins and other structures can provide leather in chests. Search them whenever they are on your route, especially if you are already exploring for other resources, but do not postpone a required upgrade while waiting for a chest to roll the correct material. Hunt the matching animal group when the tier matters.
What light leather is used for
Light leather is the common early-game processed material. The community item database labels it as a basic crafting component, and it is also part of the reported Tanning Rack recipe through its light-hide ingredient. Expect it in lower-tier equipment and other introductory recipes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Its strategic value is highest at the start of a world: three light hide are needed for the reported rack recipe, and additional light leather supports early crafting while you establish your base. Because small animals are the usual source, light leather is generally the easiest tier to replenish.
What medium leather is used for
Medium leather becomes important when you move beyond starter equipment. It is associated with progression gear and the first backpack expansion, making it more valuable than its raw drop frequency might suggest.
First backpack upgrade
PC Gamer lists the first backpack upgrade as requiring eight iron ingots and 16 medium leather. The ingot requirement means you should plan leather gathering alongside mining rather than treating the backpack as a leather-only project. Save the medium leather until you have the other ingredients and the required crafting access.
The upgrade label can vary between guides or game versions. Match the material list to the backpack tooltip in your current build before spending the leather.
Rank #4
Medium-tier equipment
Medium leather is also associated with armor and other progression recipes. If a recipe offers several material substitutions, compare the full ingredient list first; a medium-leather item may still require additional metal, cloth, or station access.
What heavy leather is used for
Heavy leather is a later-progression material obtained from large or armoured beasts such as bears and mosshorns. It is harder to target efficiently because the creatures are not the same small-animal or predator groups used for the first two tiers.
Tier 3 backpack path
For Backpack Upgrade 1 at Workbench Tier 3, PC Gamer lists 24 heavy leather, 40 cindercloth scraps, and eight cobalt ingots. Treat these as a combined milestone: begin collecting heavy hides only when you can also pursue cindercloth, cobalt, and the required workbench tier.

Keep a reserve of heavy leather once you are close to the target because advanced armor recipes may compete for the same material.
Leather armor, weapons, and recipe uncertainty
Leather armor
The community-maintained Hytale Wiki Leather Armor page says leather armor can be crafted from light or medium leather together with other materials. It does not provide a complete, final set of defensive values, and community pages can lag behind patches. Use the page as a general indication that leather supports armor, then inspect the current in-game recipe for exact ingredients, station requirements, and protection values.
Weapons and tools
The Hytale Calculators community database describes leather as a common crafting material and associates leather with the iron sword. Its light-, medium-, and heavy-leather records connect the tiers with basic crafting, backpacks or armor, and advanced armor. Because this is a community database rather than an authoritative patch log, confirm the iron sword recipe and every other weapon or tool recipe in the current crafting interface.

Why tooltips matter
Recipe names, quantities, station tiers, and defensive statistics are version-sensitive. A guide can correctly describe the leather system while still showing an outdated armor recipe. Before crafting, compare the guide’s material list with the tooltip displayed by your Hytale build.
An efficient leather farming plan
Starter plan: establish production
- Collect tree trunks, stone, and three light hide.
- Craft and place the Tanning Rack using the reported six-trunk, three-stone, three-light-hide recipe.
- Load light hide and use the first processing interval to gather more wood and stone.
- Craft the early equipment that your current recipes require, keeping unprocessed hides in storage rather than consuming every piece immediately.
Inventory plan: prepare for the first backpack expansion
- Confirm that the backpack tooltip in your version asks for medium leather.
- Hunt the predator group associated with medium hide: wolves, sabretooth, or hyenas.
- Mine or reserve eight iron ingots while you build toward 16 medium leather.
- Process medium hide in batches and leave the rack free of unnecessary material types.
- Craft the expansion when both the leather and ingot requirements, plus any station requirement shown in-game, are met.
Advanced plan: work toward the Tier 3 upgrade
- Verify that your workbench has reached Tier 3 and that the upgrade still lists heavy leather.
- Hunt large or armoured beasts such as bears and mosshorns for heavy hide.
- Collect cindercloth scraps and cobalt at the same time so leather does not become the only completed ingredient.
- Process heavy hide while travelling between those resource areas.
- Reserve 24 heavy leather for the reported upgrade requirement before using the material on optional armor.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I killed animals but received no leather.”
The immediate drop may be hide rather than finished leather. Check your inventory for light, medium, or heavy hide and take it to a Tanning Rack. Leather is the processed result.
“The rack will not accept my material.”
Check whether you are trying to load a hide type that is not currently supported by the rack’s available type slots. Collect completed output, remove an unneeded material type, and then load the intended hide. Also verify that you are using the rack interface rather than a different crafting station.
“I have leather, but the upgrade is still unavailable.”
Leather is only one requirement. The first backpack upgrade also lists eight iron ingots and 16 medium leather, while the Tier 3 Backpack Upgrade 1 lists 24 heavy leather, 40 cindercloth scraps, and eight cobalt ingots. Confirm every ingredient, the workbench tier, and any unlock condition shown by the current tooltip.
“Chest exploration is giving me too little leather.”
Chest contents are random. Use ruin and structure chests as supplementary loot and switch to targeted hunting when a specific tier is required.
Recommended Free Tools
“The guide’s armor numbers do not match my game.”
Community armor pages do not guarantee final statistics. Treat their recipes and values as version-sensitive, then trust the live in-game tooltip for the build you are playing.
“The rack feels too slow.”
The reported baseline is at least about 30 seconds per processing cycle. Start a batch, then mine, gather, explore, or hunt while the timer runs. Keep a second activity ready so the delay does not become idle time.
Quick Recap
A quick decision framework
