In Hytale, an element is not merely a label such as fire or ice. The official data model ties three systems together: a DamageCause that classifies damage, an optional OnHitEffect that applies a status to the victim, and a set of Reactions that can trigger when another element strikes while that state is present. Understanding those links is the key to reading elemental abilities, resistances, and future balance changes without assuming an undocumented fire-versus-ice chart.

The currently documented rules explain how the system works, but they do not provide a complete, permanent list of every live element ID, damage value, duration, or matchup. The practical guide below separates confirmed mechanics from details that remain version-specific.

The official API describes the relationship in one sentence: “An element ties a damage cause to a status.” That wording matters because Hytale routes elemental behavior through two different kinds of assets:
- Damage causes classify the incoming or outgoing damage.
- Entity effects represent temporary states on a creature, including states that can modify damage or enable a reaction.
An element connects those layers. A damaging ability can use an element to determine which damage cause is produced, apply an optional effect when the hit lands, and expose a reaction that responds to a later elemental hit. The initial hit, the resulting status, and the reaction are separate events even when players experience them as one combo.

The three parts of Hytale’s element data model
1. DamageCause: how the hit is classified
A DamageCause asset identifies the category used when damage is calculated. Conversion runes can re-key an ability’s elemental damage to a different damage-cause asset, so the same ability framework can be routed through another elemental classification without rewriting every ability effect.
This classification is what resistance and vulnerability checks use. It is not automatically a visual description, a status effect, or a reaction. A hit can have a damage cause and deal damage even when it has no on-hit status and no reaction configured.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. OnHitEffect: the status applied by the hit
An element may define an OnHitEffect. When present, the damaging hit applies that entity-effect status to the target. The status is a state on the victim, not a second damage type. Its behavior depends on the entity-effect definition: it can last for a configured period, carry modifiers, or provide the state that a later elemental hit checks for.
Because the effect is optional, an elemental hit does not necessarily leave a visible debuff. Conversely, a status can continue influencing the target after the original damage event has finished.
3. Reactions: what happens when another element arrives
The Reactions map is keyed by the element ID that acts as the trigger. A matching hit can apply an EntityEffect reaction to the target. In other words, the first element establishes a state and a later element looks for that state before applying its follow-up behavior.
ConsumeState defaults to true. Unless an asset changes that setting, the state that reacted is removed when the reaction occurs. A designer can therefore make a reaction one-use, or configure the state to remain available for additional interactions.
| Component | Role | What it does not tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|
DamageCause |
Classifies damage for calculation, resistance, and outgoing-damage rules. | It does not prove that a status or reaction is applied. |
OnHitEffect |
Applies an entity-effect status when the hit lands. | It is not automatically a damage value or a permanent debuff. |
Reactions |
Checks for another element and can apply a reaction entity effect. | It does not describe every possible element matchup unless those entries exist in the asset. |
ConsumeState |
Controls whether the reacted state is removed; the documented default is true. |
It does not determine the damage of the reaction. |
How an elemental hit resolves
A useful way to analyze an ability is to follow the events in order rather than treating “elemental damage” as one indivisible mechanic.

- The ability selects an element or damage cause. A conversion rune or the ability’s own configuration can determine which damage-cause asset is used.
- Damage is calculated. The target’s modifiers are matched against that damage cause, including applicable parent categories.
- The optional on-hit effect is applied. If the element defines an
OnHitEffect, the target gains its entity-effect state. - A reaction check can occur. If the incoming element is a trigger listed by the target’s current element state, the configured reaction entity effect is applied.
- The reacted state is consumed when configured. With the default
ConsumeState: true, the state that enabled the reaction is removed.
This sequence explains why three combat events can look similar but behave differently: direct damage changes health, an on-hit effect changes the target’s state, and a reaction creates a further effect based on the interaction between states.
What counts as elemental damage?
Implementation references describe Physical, Elemental, and Environment as root damage-cause categories. They list examples such as Fire and Ice beneath Elemental. These names are useful when reading assets or debugging a mod, but they should not be treated as a complete player-facing balance table. The live roster and exact behavior can change with versioned assets.
The important rule is inheritance. A modifier attached to a parent damage cause can match its child causes. Therefore, a resistance or bonus applied to the Elemental parent can also affect subordinate elemental causes, while a modifier aimed at a specific child can be narrower.

Is poison elemental damage?
In the Update 7 implementation notes, Poison was changed to a subtype of Elemental damage in Poison.json. The note states that anything treating Elemental damage specially will pick poison up as well.
That is a versioned implementation rule, not a guarantee that every future build will use the same hierarchy. For Update 7 content and assets, a check against the Elemental parent category can include poison. A mod or guide that targets a particular game version should verify the corresponding asset rather than assuming the classification is permanent.
Resistances, vulnerabilities, and damage bonuses
Entity effects can define DamageResistance modifiers keyed by damage-cause assets. They can also define OutgoingDamage modifiers for damage dealt by the entity holding the effect. These are different directions of influence:
- DamageResistance changes how much matching damage the affected entity receives.
- OutgoingDamage changes damage dealt by the affected entity.
Both use damage-cause matching, including parent-child matching. A parent-category modifier can therefore influence subordinate causes, while a child-specific modifier can target a narrower class. This hierarchy is why a resistance description should name its damage-cause scope instead of simply saying “elemental resistance.”

The available documentation does not establish universal numerical percentages for each element, nor does it publish a complete list of player-facing vulnerabilities. Avoid converting the category system into an assumed chart of strengths and weaknesses.
How reactions differ from ordinary status effects
An ordinary on-hit status is attached directly to the element that caused the hit. A reaction is conditional: it requires another element to arrive while the prerequisite state exists. The distinction creates several possible patterns:
- A hit can deal damage only, with no status.
- A hit can deal damage and apply an on-hit status, but have no reaction entry.
- A later elemental hit can detect the state and apply a reaction effect.
- The reaction can consume the original state, preventing an immediate repeat until the state is applied again.
Do not describe a reaction as a permanent property of a damage type. It is an interaction between an incoming trigger element and a state already present on the target. The exact reaction effect, duration, and whether the state remains are asset-level details.
A practical method for reading an element asset
When examining a current game asset or a mod, use this checklist instead of inferring behavior from an element’s name:
- Identify the element ID. Record the exact asset identifier and the game version it belongs to.
- Follow its damage cause. Check which
DamageCauseis assigned and whether it inherits from a parent category such as Elemental. - Inspect the on-hit effect. Determine whether an
OnHitEffectexists and read the entity-effect definition for duration, stacks, and modifiers. - Read the reaction keys. Each key in
Reactionsis the triggering element ID, not a generic word such as “cold” or “fire.” - Check consumption behavior. If
ConsumeStateis absent, use the documented default oftrue; if present, follow the asset’s explicit value. - Trace modifiers separately. Look for
DamageResistanceandOutgoingDamageentries and note whether they target a parent or child damage cause.
This process prevents a common error: assuming that an element’s damage classification, status, and reaction all share the same name or lifetime.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What players can safely conclude
Players can rely on the following broad interpretation when reading ability descriptions or patch notes:
- Elemental behavior is built from damage causes and entity-effect states.
- An elemental hit may apply a status, but the status is optional.
- Reactions require a trigger element and an existing element-tagged state.
- The reacted state is normally consumed unless the asset says otherwise.
- Resistance and damage bonuses follow damage-cause categories, so a parent category can affect child causes.
- For Update 7 assets, poison belongs under the Elemental parent category.
These statements describe the framework, not a promise that every ability uses every part of it.

What is not yet established
Official material currently does not provide one authoritative, complete roster of every live element ID with each exact damage amount, status duration, reaction result, or player matchup. It also does not establish a universal Fire-versus-Ice, Poison-versus-Water, or similar chart that applies across all abilities and versions.
Any future table of named elements should therefore be labeled with its game version and tied to the underlying asset or patch note. Community lists can be useful for discovery, but they should not override the definitions shipped in the relevant build.
Common interpretation mistakes
“Elemental” means one fixed damage number
Elemental is a category in the damage-cause hierarchy. The actual amount depends on the ability, modifiers, target, and version-specific balance data.
Every elemental hit applies a debuff
Only elements with an OnHitEffect apply that configured status. Damage classification alone does not guarantee a debuff.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A reaction is the same as the original status
The original status enables the interaction; the reaction is a separate entity effect. Its application and consumption rules must be read independently.
Poison has always been elemental
The documented classification change is tied to Update 7. Older or newer assets may differ, so version context belongs with the claim.
A parent resistance affects only the named parent
Parent causes match their children. A modifier on a parent category can therefore influence subordinate causes as well.
Bottom line for Hytale builds and mods
Think of a Hytale element as a small rules package: it routes a hit through a damage cause, may apply an entity-effect status, and can define reactions to later elements. Poison is an Elemental subtype in the Update 7 implementation, and damage modifiers inherit through parent-child cause relationships. Beyond those documented rules, exact element lists, values, durations, and matchups remain version-specific; verify the relevant asset before presenting them as universal game mechanics.
