Hytale armor uses four wearable pieces—helm, cuirass, gauntlets and greaves—with shields crafted separately. The material ladder is Copper, Iron, Thorium, Cobalt, Adamantite and Mithril. You make the gear at an Armorer’s Workbench: Tier 1 covers Copper and Iron, Tier 2 adds Thorium and Cobalt, and Tier 3 is intended to add Adamantite and Mithril. Recipe quantities and Mithril’s normal-play availability are not consistent across current third-party early-access guides, so treat the in-game recipe panel as the final authority.

Hytale armor at a glance
Each armor set is divided into four core slots:
- Helm: the head piece.
- Cuirass: the chest piece and, according to one upgrade guide, the largest single contribution to a set’s stats.
- Gauntlets: the hand and arm piece.
- Greaves: the leg piece.
Shields use their own category and recipes at the same station; they are not a fifth piece of the armor set. All five categories appear in the Armorer’s Workbench interface: Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Greaves and Shields.

The reported material progression is:
| Material tier | Workbench access reported in guides | Reported identity or bonus | Confidence and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Tier 1 | Protection against projectiles and physical damage | One comparative guide; Iron is reported as stronger for these protections |
| Iron | Tier 1 | More projectile and physical protection than Copper | One comparative guide; exact values are not stated |
| Thorium | Tier 2 | Poison resistance | Single-guide report; verify the current tooltip |
| Cobalt | Tier 2 | Special-attack damage bonus | Single-guide report; verify the current tooltip |
| Adamantite | Tier 3 | Light-attack damage bonus | Single-guide report; verify the current tooltip |
| Mithril | Tier 3 is reported | Not reliably established | Availability and recipe counts conflict between guides |
No official Hytale patch note or official recipe table was located for these details. The available material comes from third-party guides describing an early-access build, many of them roughly nine months old in the search summaries available on October 14, 2026. Balance, recipes and even mode availability can therefore change. When a number in this guide conflicts with your game, use the recipe shown in your Armorer’s Workbench.
What each armor material is supposed to do
The tier names indicate progression, but the guides do not establish a complete, official stat table. The only published comparison found describes different defensive or combat focuses rather than a simple “every higher tier is better” rule.

Copper and Iron: the first protection choices
Copper and Iron are the Tier 1 materials. A comparative guide attributes projectile and physical-damage protection to both, with Iron providing more than Copper. The guide does not publish numerical armor values, mitigation percentages or a test method, so use the in-game stat panel rather than assuming a fixed percentage improvement.
Copper remains valuable because it is the earliest complete set you can target. A full Copper set gives a new character a practical baseline while higher-tier materials and workbench upgrades are still out of reach.

Thorium becomes available after the Tier 2 workbench upgrade. One guide identifies poison resistance as its distinguishing benefit. That is a useful reason to choose Thorium for encounters where poison is the main threat, but the evidence is limited to a single guide and does not establish how much resistance each piece grants or whether the benefit is additive across a set.
Cobalt: a reported special-attack bonus
Cobalt is also listed as a Tier 2 material. The same comparison assigns it a bonus to special-attack damage. If your build relies on special attacks, inspect the Cobalt tooltip and compare its actual values with the alternative materials available in your mode. No authoritative table confirms the size, stacking behavior or exact definition of “special attack.”
Adamantite: a reported light-attack bonus
Adamantite is listed behind the Tier 3 workbench and is associated in one guide with light-attack damage. The guide does not provide a numerical bonus or explain whether the bonus applies to every weapon. Treat the material description as a direction for testing, not as a guaranteed percentage.
Rank #2
Mithril: the unresolved top tier
Mithril is placed at the top of the reported ladder, but it is the least certain option. Guides disagree about both its recipes and whether it can be obtained in normal Adventure or Exploration play. One says Mithril gear is unavailable in those modes and can be obtained in Creative; another says Mithril is not naturally occurring in early access. There is no official availability statement in the material available for this guide.
How the Armorer’s Workbench works
The Armorer’s Workbench is the crafting station for all four armor slots and shields. Its upgrade level determines which material categories appear. The reported progression is:
| Workbench level | Armor access reported | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 (base) | Copper and Iron | Whether your current world exposes both recipes and the required ingots |
| Tier 2 | Thorium and Cobalt are added | The station’s upgrade menu and the exact resource list in your build |
| Tier 3 | Adamantite and Mithril are reported | Whether the upgrade is available and whether Mithril is enabled in your game mode |
Base workbench materials
One early-access guide lists the base Armorer’s Workbench as costing 2 Copper Ingots, 10 Tree Trunks and 5 Stone. This is a reported recipe, not an official guaranteed cost. If your construction screen shows different quantities, follow that screen.
Tier 2 upgrade materials
A single guide lists the Tier 2 upgrade as:
- 20 Copper Ingots
- 20 Bone Fragments
- 20 Medium Leather
- 100 Azure Logs
The upgrade is the reported gate for Thorium and Cobalt armor. Gather these materials only after checking your station, because an early-access patch may alter either the quantities or the names.
Tier 3 upgrade materials are conflicting
One source lists a Tier 3 package of 25 Thorium Bars, 25 Cobalt Bars, 40 Shadoweave Scraps, 40 Sturdy Chitin and 3 Void Hearts. Another guide gives no Tier 3 material list at all. Because the sources do not agree, do not plan a long farming route around those numbers. Open the Armorer’s Workbench upgrade menu in your own world and use its displayed requirements.

Step-by-step: craft and upgrade armor
- Build the base station. Place an Armorer’s Workbench using the construction recipe shown by your game. The commonly reported early-access cost is 2 Copper Ingots, 10 Tree Trunks and 5 Stone.
- Open the station categories. Select the Armorer’s Workbench and choose Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Greaves or Shields. Do not look for shields inside a torso or weapon recipe; they have a separate category.
- Read the live recipe. Select the exact piece and material you want. Check the displayed ingot, leather, fiber or scrap counts, the required workbench tier and any mode restriction before spending resources.
- Make a Copper starter piece or set. Copper is the quickest reported first target. A complete set gives coverage across all four slots while you learn which materials your world supports.
- Upgrade the station to Tier 2 when the materials are ready. Use the upgrade screen rather than relying on a guide’s list. Tier 2 is reported to unlock Thorium and Cobalt.
- Compare the newly available effects. Pick Thorium if the current tooltip confirms a poison-resistance benefit, or Cobalt if its displayed bonus suits your special-attack build. Do not assume the tier name alone determines the best choice.
- Upgrade to Tier 3 only after confirming its cost. The published lists conflict. Verify the exact bars, scraps, chitin and other items in-game, then decide whether Adamantite is obtainable and useful in your mode.
- Check Mithril separately. Even if a Tier 3 slot appears, confirm that Mithril is enabled in Adventure or Exploration. Guides disagree about whether it is restricted to Creative or absent from early access.
- Recheck every recipe after an update. Early-access patches can change quantities, unlocks and item names. The station’s current recipe is more reliable than an older web guide.
Known sample recipes—and why you should verify them
The following examples are useful for estimating the scale of material investment, but different sites list different quantities for some of the same pieces. They should not be treated as immutable recipes.
| Piece | Reported ingredients | Workbench requirement | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Helmet | 6 Copper Ingots, 2 Plant Fiber | No upgrade beyond the base station | Reported by one recipe guide; verify counts |
| Cobalt Helmet | 12 Cobalt Ingots, 4 Heavy Leather, 4 Shadoweave Scraps | Tier 2 | Reported by one recipe guide; verify counts |
| Adamantite Helmet | 15 Adamantite Ingots, 5 Heavy Leather, 4 Cindercloth Scraps | Tier 3 | Reported by one recipe guide; verify counts |
| Cobalt Greaves | 18 Cobalt Ingots, 6 Heavy Leather, 6 Shadoweave Scraps | Tier 2 | Another guide lists different quantities for the same piece |
Differences can result from game-version changes, transcription errors or separate recipe variants. Before crafting, compare the ingredient icons and quantities in the station with your inventory. If the displayed recipe differs from this table, the displayed recipe wins.
Mithril armor: what is and is not established
Mithril deserves its own check because it is the material most likely to produce a misleading search result. A guide lists a Mithril Helmet at 12 Mithril Ingots, 6 Storm Leather and 40 Essence of the Void. Another guide lists the same helmet with 4 Storm Leather instead. Counts for the Mithril Cuirass, Gauntlets and Greaves also differ between sites.
Availability is disputed as well. One guide says Mithril gear is not available in Adventure or Exploration mode and can be obtained in Creative mode. Another says Mithril is not naturally occurring in early access. Those statements are not equivalent: one describes a mode restriction, while the other describes world-resource availability. Until an official recipe table or patch note resolves the issue, describe Mithril as listed in guides, with normal-play availability unconfirmed.
If a Mithril recipe appears in your station, record the exact quantities and the mode shown by the interface. If it does not appear, do not assume that mining longer will unlock it; the limitation may be a workbench, version or mode restriction.

Which piece should you craft first?
When materials are scarce, one guide recommends this order:
- Cuirass—the guide identifies it as the largest contributor to overall set statistics.
- Helm
- Greaves
- Gauntlets
This is a resource-priority rule, not a universal damage or survivability calculation; no official stat table establishes the exact advantage. It is sensible when you cannot immediately afford four matching pieces because it puts the reported largest contribution first.

For a new character, a full Copper set is the practical first milestone. Completing all four slots avoids leaving one body area at starter protection while you save for a higher material. Once Tier 2 is available, choose between Thorium and Cobalt based on the threat or attack type shown in your current tooltips rather than trying to mix-and-match from an assumed set bonus that has not been documented.

Confirm the gate before farming
Look at the recipe and the workbench upgrade menu first. Farming Copper for a Tier 2 piece, or collecting a supposed Tier 3 ingredient before the station requests it, ties up storage without moving you toward a craft. The conflicting Tier 3 lists make this check especially important.
Separate ingots from secondary components
The sample recipes show that armor is not only an ingot sink. Leather, plant fiber and several scrap types are also required. A character who smelts enough metal but ignores Heavy Leather or Shadoweave Scraps still cannot complete the piece. Use the live recipe to make a complete shopping list for one slot at a time.
Best Value
Budget for a whole set only after testing one piece
Because published quantities vary, craft one representative piece after confirming its in-game cost. That lets you catch a version mismatch before committing the resources for all four slots. If the stat panel or material effect is not what your build needs, you have not consumed an entire tier’s supply.

- Looking for shields in the armor-slot recipe: select the separate Shields category in the Armorer’s Workbench.
- Assuming Tier 2 means Adamantite: the reported unlock is Thorium and Cobalt; Adamantite is associated with Tier 3.
- Using an online quantity as a guarantee: recipe counts differ, including for Cobalt Greaves and Mithril Helmets. Check the current station.
- Assuming Mithril must be mineable: its normal-play status is unconfirmed. Check your game mode and whether the recipe appears.
- Spending rare materials on gauntlets first: the reported priority places the Cuirass first when resources are limited.
- Expecting official numerical bonuses: no published official stat table or developer quotation was located. The poison-resistance, special-attack and light-attack descriptions come from third-party comparisons and may be incomplete.
- Following an old early-access guide after a patch: re-open every relevant recipe and upgrade screen after updating the game.
How to read conflicting armor guides
Give the highest weight to information that your current game can confirm: the ingredient icons, the quantity counters, the required station tier and the mode in which the recipe appears. Treat a claim supported by one guide as provisional, especially when another guide gives a different number. A guide that does not provide a Tier 3 list cannot confirm the Tier 3 cost, and a guide that describes Mithril in Creative cannot prove that Adventure mode supports it.
As of October 14, 2026, the available coverage is primarily third-party early-access material rather than official Hytale documentation. No official patch notes or official recipe table were found for the figures above, and no named developer or publisher statistic or quotation is available to substantiate a precise armor value. That is why this guide separates reported effects from confirmed in-game checks instead of presenting an invented armor chart.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence whenever you are deciding what to craft next:
- What threatens you? For physical or projectile threats, compare the Copper and Iron protection shown in your stat panel. For poison, inspect Thorium’s current resistance description.
- What attack do you use? If your build depends on special attacks, inspect Cobalt; if it depends on light attacks, inspect Adamantite once Tier 3 is available.
- What station tier do you actually have? Tier 1 supports the reported Copper/Iron options, Tier 2 the reported Thorium/Cobalt options and Tier 3 the reported Adamantite/Mithril options.
- Can you finish a set? If not, follow the reported Cuirass, Helm, Greaves, Gauntlets priority and avoid spending the remaining materials on a lower-impact slot.
- Does the recipe appear in your mode and version? This final check is mandatory for Mithril and for any quantity copied from an older guide.
This approach keeps the useful part of the published tier advice while protecting you from the unresolved recipe and availability differences in early-access coverage.
