A hybrid mobile app is an installable app whose interface is built substantially with web technologies—HTML, CSS and JavaScript—and displayed inside a native app container, commonly in an embedded WebView. It can combine that web interface with native controls and selected device features. The result is distinct from both a website opened in a browser and an app whose interface is rendered entirely with native platform controls.
What makes a mobile app hybrid?
The hybrid part is the combination: web-based interface code runs inside an application package made for a mobile operating system. Microsoft describes hybrid app UI as packaged with the app, while OWASP describes hybrid apps as cross-platform apps that rely substantially on web technologies running in an embedded browser. Microsoft Learn and OWASP provide these definitions.

A WebView is the common way to show web content within the app rather than sending the user to a separate browser. Android’s WebView can display app-controlled web content inline, and Apple’s WKWebView can render HTML, CSS and JavaScript alongside native views. Android Developers and Apple Developer Documentation describe these platform components.

How hybrid apps differ from other mobile approaches
| Approach | Where the interface runs | Typical strengths | Main considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native app | Platform UI framework and native code for a specific operating system | Close platform integration and platform-specific behavior | A separate platform implementation may be needed |
| Hybrid app | Web UI displayed in an embedded WebView inside an installable native container | Potential reuse of web UI and assets, app packaging, and access to selected native capabilities | Web rendering, bridge security and platform-specific testing matter |
| Mobile web app | A website opened in the device browser | Browser access and web-style updates without a store app release | Browser sandbox limits device integration; it is not the same as an installed native package |
| Cross-platform native-rendering app | Shared framework code using platform APIs or native controls | Shared logic with native capabilities | It is not necessarily WebView-based; behavior depends on the framework |
The word “hybrid” is sometimes used broadly for any app that combines web and native elements. In this article, it means the clearer traditional case: a substantial web interface rendered in an embedded WebView. OWASP distinguishes this from cross-platform frameworks that use platform-native APIs rather than relying on an embedded browser for much of the app UI. OWASP’s mobile application taxonomy explains the distinction.
What hybrid apps can—and cannot—offer
Code and interface reuse
A team may be able to reuse web UI and assets across platforms or with a browser-based product. Android says WebView can embed app-controlled web content and support reuse of website code and dynamic updates; Microsoft also identifies code reuse across devices and web browsers as a potential productivity benefit. These are possibilities, not guarantees of lower overall development cost: platform-specific work, testing and maintenance still matter. Android Developers and Microsoft Learn discuss these benefits.

Device access and user experience
A hybrid app can use native functionality through platform APIs, plugins or a bridge between JavaScript and native code. The available features and the quality of their integration depend on the framework and implementation. A WebView-based design also does not automatically reproduce the interaction patterns, rendering behavior or performance of a fully native interface on every device.

There is no universal performance ranking established here for hybrid, native, browser-based and cross-platform native-rendering apps. The practical result depends on the interface, workload, WebView use, device capabilities and implementation. For an app with demanding graphics, complex transitions or platform-specific interactions, evaluate those requirements on the target devices rather than assuming that a shared web interface will be sufficient—or that it will necessarily be slower.

Why the web-to-native boundary matters for security
When a WebView can call native functions through a JavaScript bridge, the boundary between web content and the app’s device-level capabilities needs careful control. If untrusted JavaScript can reach exposed Android objects, sensitive data or actions may be at risk. Keep bridged capabilities limited to what the app needs and avoid treating arbitrary web content as trusted.
A 2020 study by Abhishek Tiwari, Jyoti Prakash, Sascha Gross and Christian Hammer analyzed 7,500 randomly selected Android applications, 196 popular apps and 1,000 malware samples. In the study’s benign-app sample, the authors reported that 68% used at least one WebView and 87.9% established an active communication channel between Android and JavaScript. Those figures describe that study’s samples and methods, not current prevalence across all apps or app stores. The paper, “A Large Scale Analysis of Android-Web Hybridization,” discusses WebView use, communication channels and potential risks.

Choose the right surface for sign-in and external sites
For app sign-in, Android currently recommends Credential Manager. When a user needs to visit a third-party identity provider, Android advises using Custom Tabs so credentials remain isolated to that site. Use a WebView when the app needs to display content it controls inline; use the platform’s browser-powered option when the user is navigating to an external site. Android’s WebView guidance covers this distinction.

When does a hybrid app make sense?
Consider a hybrid approach when substantial parts of the interface already exist as web UI, the app needs an installable package, and the required device features can be integrated reliably. Compare it with native, browser-based and cross-platform native-rendering options against these needs:
- How much of the interface and logic can genuinely be shared?
- Which device capabilities must the app use, and how will it access them?
- Do performance, accessibility, or platform-specific interaction requirements call for native UI?
- How will content and app updates be delivered and tested across operating systems and devices?
- What web content can reach native functionality, and how will that boundary be secured?
Hybrid is an architectural choice, not a promise that an app will be cheaper, faster to build or better for every use case. The right fit follows from the app’s device access, interface, performance, platform behavior, distribution and security requirements.
