A human brain is a biological system shaped by evolution and experience; an AI system is an engineered model running on computing hardware. The comparison is most useful when it focuses on a specific task and on how each system learns, remembers and uses energy—not on a single claim that one is smarter overall.
How are the human brain and AI different?
The word “neural” in artificial neural networks points to a historical and conceptual inspiration: networks of computational units were developed in part by drawing on ideas about brains. It does not mean that an artificial unit is a biological neuron, or that a modern AI model is a replica of a human brain. Neuroscience and AI have influenced one another, but they study and build different kinds of systems. What do brain-scale numbers tell us?
A 2024 review in National Science Review reports estimates of 86 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses in the human brain. These figures convey biological scale, not a shared measure of intelligence: they cannot be directly converted into AI model parameters or used to rank a person and a model. The review also notes the difficulty of modeling brain structure across scales and mapping the full connectome. Read the review.

Not in any simple one-to-one sense. Brains have biological plasticity and multiple memory systems; AI training and memory depend on the design of each system. A 2024 review comparing generative AI with human memory makes a more focused distinction: the hippocampal system it discusses can generate a whole memory from an incomplete retrieval cue, while the AI learning it contrasts uses non-local backpropagation of error rather than local associative learning in the hippocampal memory system. This is a comparison of particular mechanisms, not a claim that every human memory or every AI model works this way. The review on human memory systems and generative AI.

Is the brain more energy-efficient than AI?
There is no fair general answer without matching the work being done and the boundaries being counted. A 2021 PNAS audit by William B. Levy and Victoria G. Calvert examined energy use in the human cortex. Under its analytical partitioning, it estimated that communication consumes 35 times more energy than computation. The authors also estimated 0.1 ATP-watts for cortical computation and 3.5 W for long-distance communication, while distinguishing those figures from the often-quoted 20 W of glucose available to the whole brain. Those values describe different scopes and quantities; they are not a controlled comparison with an AI chip or model. Read the PNAS energy audit.
An AI energy comparison would need to specify whether it measures training or inference, and whether it counts a chip alone or the wider system. Comparing a brain estimate with a GPU’s power draw or a model’s total training energy without those qualifications can be misleading.

Can AI think like a human brain?
The available comparisons do not establish that current AI is conscious, understands as humans do, or reproduces whole-brain computation. Similar-looking outputs on a task are evidence of similar results for that task—not proof of shared internal processes. Nor do the cited studies supply one universal benchmark that settles whether AI or humans are smarter overall. The answer depends on the task, the model or person, and the way performance is assessed.
What does brain-inspired AI mean?
Brain-inspired AI borrows design ideas from biology without claiming to recreate the brain. Neuromorphic computing, for example, is a research direction that seeks to draw on aspects of brain architecture and function. Such work may suggest useful engineering principles, including approaches to energy efficiency, but inspiration is not equivalence and does not by itself demonstrate human-like cognition. See the 2024 review of brain-inspired intelligence, Looking to the brain to improve energy efficiency of AI and Neuroscience-Inspired Artificial Intelligence.
