First check the model: Google has ended support for Chromecast (1st gen), so it is no longer a dependable Hulu solution. On supported models, begin with the same non-guest Wi‑Fi, a Hulu restart, and a complete Chromecast power cycle.
Hulu identifies Chromecast as a supported viewing platform and maintains a current screen-sharing help article, while its detailed Chromecast troubleshooting page is older. Use the current Google TV and Google Home menu names below rather than assuming an older interface is unchanged.
Identify your Chromecast before troubleshooting
Hulu’s regional device documentation lists Chromecast (2nd gen), Chromecast (3rd gen), Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV (HD and 4K), and Google TV Streamer. The model list is from Hulu’s Japan help center, so regional support pages can differ: Hulu’s Chromecast model list. Hulu’s U.S. pages continue to list Chromecast as a supported platform: Hulu + Live TV device information.
First-generation Chromecast
Google says support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended. It no longer receives software or security updates and Google no longer provides technical support, so compatibility and performance can deteriorate even if it worked previously: Google’s end-of-support notice. Google’s firmware page still identifies its firmware as 1.36.159268, marked unsupported: Chromecast firmware versions. Do not make a factory reset your main plan for this model; replacement is usually more sensible.

Basic Chromecast versus Google TV
- Basic Chromecast devices receive a stream controlled by a phone, tablet, or compatible Chrome browser.
- Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer can run Hulu directly with a remote, giving you a fallback when phone casting fails.
Fastest three-minute fix
- Make sure the Chromecast home screen appears on the correct TV input.
- Connect the phone or tablet and Chromecast to the same Wi‑Fi network name. Do not put one on guest Wi‑Fi. Temporarily disable a VPN, private DNS, security filter, or work-profile restriction.
- Force-close Hulu, reopen it, and try a different title.
- Remove the Chromecast’s power cable for at least 60 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the home screen. Hulu’s older guidance recommends a conservative five-minute power-off when a shorter cycle does not help: Hulu’s Chromecast troubleshooting guidance.
- Try YouTube or another Cast-enabled app. This separates a discovery or hardware problem from a Hulu-specific one.
If Chromecast does not appear in Hulu
Missing discovery is normally a network, permission, or device-compatibility issue—not a Hulu title problem.
Check the network path
- Open Google Home and confirm the Chromecast is online.
- Use the same non-guest network on both devices. Separate 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz network names are fine only when both devices join the same one.
- Turn off VPNs and privacy/security filtering while testing.
- Ask whether the router has client isolation, AP isolation, VLAN separation, or a guest-network rule enabled. These can block devices that appear to share a Wi‑Fi name. Google’s troubleshooting flow covers these router paths: Google Chromecast troubleshooter.
- Restart the router and Chromecast if other Cast apps also fail.
Android checks
- Install Hulu from the official Google Play Store and update it.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on, then restart the phone.
- Confirm Google Home can see the Chromecast before reopening Hulu.
iPhone and iPad checks
Google currently lists iOS 17.0 or later for the Google Home app used with its streaming devices. That is not a universal Hulu minimum, but older iPhones and iPads should be checked for Google Home compatibility: Google streaming-device requirements. Also check local-network permission, VPN/security settings, and Wi‑Fi.

Use Hulu’s native Cast button, then select the Chromecast. Generic screen mirroring is a different path and can produce DRM errors, a black screen, or audio without video.
If Chromecast appears but Hulu will not start
- Stop the current stream and tap the Cast button to disconnect Hulu.
- Play the same title locally on the phone or tablet. If local playback fails, investigate Hulu, the account, or the title before resetting Chromecast.
- If local playback works, force-close Hulu, power-cycle Chromecast, reconnect, and try another title.
- Test another phone or tablet if available. A successful YouTube cast does not prove Hulu’s app, DRM session, account, or title is working.
- Update Hulu. If the problem affects only one show, movie, live channel, or profile, test another on-demand title before changing hardware.
Chromecast with Google TV: repair the on-device Hulu app
This path applies when Hulu is installed and runs directly on Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer, not merely when a phone is sending a stream.

- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → Hulu.
- Select Force stop, then reopen Hulu.
- Update Hulu through Google Play.
- If it still crashes or will not open, uninstall and reinstall Hulu.
- Restart the device.
- Check firmware at Settings → System → About → System update. Google says Google TV device updates are checked on the TV, not in Google Home: Google’s update instructions.
Hulu’s five-minute power-off and reinstall recommendations come from its older Chromecast article; menu wording may differ on current Google TV software.
Black screen, no signal, audio-only, or “unsupported display”
First determine whether the Chromecast home screen is visible. If the home screen is also black or the TV says “no signal,” this is an HDMI, power, or display-chain problem rather than a Hulu playback problem.

- Select the correct HDMI input and try another HDMI port.
- Use the supplied power adapter and cable; do not rely on an unstable TV USB port.
- Connect Chromecast directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, or soundbar.
- Power-cycle the TV and reseat HDMI and power connections.
- Test another Cast app. If every app is black, troubleshoot the device and HDMI path.
Google requires HDCP 1.3 or higher, with HDCP 2.2 required for 4K. An older receiver, splitter, or television can therefore cause an unsupported-display message or black video: Google hardware and display requirements.
For a Chromecast-wide black screen, Google’s recovery procedure is to turn off the TV, disconnect the streaming device from HDMI and power, restore TV power, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect Chromecast. On certain models, holding the physical Chromecast button for at least 25 seconds until the LED changes also restarts the device: Google black-screen recovery.

Buffering, stuttering, or repeated stops
- Check whether other apps buffer. If they do, restart the router and Chromecast and reduce other network-heavy activity.
- Move the router or Chromecast away from interference and test the other Wi‑Fi band.
- Try a shorter or lower-quality title to distinguish congestion from a title-specific problem.
- For 4K, verify the complete display chain and network. Google gives at least 20 Mbps as its benchmark for 4K content on its streaming devices; that is not a guarantee that every Hulu title will play at 4K: Google’s requirements.
- If only Hulu buffers after updates and restarts, reinstall Hulu on Google TV or contact Hulu.
When only live TV fails
Hulu + Live TV can fail while on-demand playback works. Channel rights, regional availability, account location, and home-network requirements can apply. Hulu notes that some channels or content are unavailable in certain locations or on certain devices: Hulu + Live TV terms and device information. Test an on-demand title before resetting Chromecast. A regional or rights restriction is not evidence that Chromecast hardware is defective.
Choose the right owner for the problem

When replacing Chromecast makes sense
- You own Chromecast (1st gen), whose Google support has ended.
- The device repeatedly disappears from Google Home, reboots, or loses power.
- It fails with several Cast-enabled apps after network and HDMI checks.
- Your TV or receiver lacks the required HDCP support.
- You want a remote-controlled Hulu app instead of phone-dependent casting.
For Google Cast continuity and direct app playback, Google TV Streamer is the natural replacement category; see the official product page: Google TV Streamer. Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV are separate platforms with their own Hulu apps, not Chromecast fixes: Roku players, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV 4K. Verify current models, prices, and regional Hulu support before buying.
A direct HDMI connection from a compatible computer or device can bypass Cast discovery, but it may introduce browser, resolution, audio, or HDCP limitations. Hulu treats HDMI and Chromecast as separate screen-sharing methods: Hulu screen-sharing help.
