On a Mac, Google Meet screen sharing usually fails because the browser lacks macOS capture permission, the meeting host has disabled presenting, or the selected share mode cannot capture the content or audio you expect. Start by allowing the browser that is running Meet under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, fully restarting the browser, and testing a Chrome tab. Then work through the branches below for disabled controls, missing windows, silent audio, blank presentations, and browser-specific problems.
Try this five-minute fix first
- Ask the host whether Host management has disabled participant screen sharing.
- Open the meeting in an up-to-date Chrome window.
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording and enable the browser you are actually using for Meet.
- Quit and relaunch Chrome. For a complete restart, open a new tab, enter
chrome://restart, press Return, and rejoin the call. - Choose Present now > A tab and test a simple Chrome tab. Google recommends current Chrome for the broadest Meet screen-sharing functionality (Google Meet Help).
Give the correct browser permission in macOS
Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and newer-style System Settings
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Turn on the browser containing your Meet tab: Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge.
- Authenticate with Touch ID or an administrator password if macOS asks.
- Quit and reopen the browser before trying again.
Apple documents this control as the permission that lets an app access the Mac screen and system audio (Apple Support).
Older macOS releases
The equivalent path may be System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording. The wording changed between macOS releases; enable the application that actually contains Meet, not merely another browser installed on the Mac (Google’s older macOS guidance).
If the browser is missing from the list
Start a presentation in Meet, return to the privacy pane, and check again. Where macOS offers an add-app control, add the browser application. A school or employer may manage or lock this setting; an unavailable or immediately reversing switch requires IT assistance rather than a workaround.

Handle the macOS permission prompt
After an operating-system update, macOS may ask whether the browser can access the screen. Select Allow, return to Meet, and click Present now again. If you previously denied or dismissed the prompt, manually enable the browser in Screen & System Audio Recording, then fully relaunch it. Google specifically documents this behavior after macOS Sequoia updates (Google Meet known issues).
Restart Chrome completely
Closing only the Meet tab may leave Chrome’s capture authorization unchanged. Use chrome://restart, wait for Chrome to reopen, and rejoin the meeting. If necessary, use Command-Q, reopen Chrome, or restart the Mac. An Incognito window is a useful diagnostic: if sharing works there, an extension or stored site setting may be interfering.
Check Meet and browser permissions
- Open
meet.google.com. - Click the site-controls icon beside the address bar.
- Open the site’s permissions or settings.
- Confirm the required camera and microphone permissions and review any available capture-related permission.
- Reset stuck site permissions, reload Meet, and grant access again when prompted.
Browser menus differ, so do not expect identical labels in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. Camera or microphone permission alone does not authorize screen capture.

Choose the right Meet sharing mode

In the meeting, click Present now, select A tab, A window or Your entire screen, choose the source, and click Share. Google notes that window sharing is limited to open windows and recommends a Chrome tab for the fullest feature set (Google Meet Help).

Browser audio
For a webpage or video, select A tab and enable tab audio when the picker offers that option. The sound is tied to that tab.
Application or desktop audio
Window and entire-screen audio sharing requires macOS 14.2 or newer according to Google. Update macOS and the browser, confirm the capture permission includes system audio, and try again. If app audio remains unreliable, move the content into a Chrome tab and share the tab instead (Google Meet Help).

Fix a missing, blank or frozen share
The picker never appears or shows a capture error
Recheck the macOS permission for the active browser, quit it completely, run chrome://restart if using Chrome, and rejoin. Restart the Mac if the permission state remains stale.
The desired window is absent
- Restore the application if it is minimized.
- Open the document or presentation before clicking Present now.
- Exit application full-screen mode and try again.
- Close and reopen the application if it still does not appear.
PowerPoint or Keynote is blank in slideshow mode
Share Your entire screen before opening the presentation in Play, Slideshow or full-screen mode. Select the correct display when multiple monitors are connected. Sharing an application window can capture the wrong surface and produce a blank or incomplete result; Google recommends the whole-screen sequence for this problem (Google Meet troubleshooting).
The share freezes, crashes or is distorted
- Disconnect external displays, docks or DisplayLink-type hardware temporarily.
- Test using the Mac’s built-in display.
- Disable nonessential browser extensions and other screen-recording software.
- Share a simple Chrome tab.
- Update macOS, the browser and presentation software.
- Try another current browser.
Google identifies incompatible video adapters or drivers as possible contributors to browser problems during screen sharing (Google Meet troubleshooting). Blurry or delayed sharing can also improve when you close unnecessary applications and streams, reduce active displays, and test a simpler network; these are isolation steps, not guaranteed fixes.

When the Present button is missing or disabled
If Present now is unavailable, the problem may be controlled by the meeting rather than your Mac. Ask the organizer to open host controls and enable participant screen sharing. Restricted meetings, webinars, classrooms and managed Google Workspace environments can impose additional policies. Google lists Host management as a reason participants may be unable to share (Google Meet Help).
Browser-specific checks
Firefox on macOS Sequoia
Update Firefox to version 132 or later, enable Firefox under Screen & System Audio Recording, and restart Firefox. Mozilla documents Sequoia screen-sharing API changes and support beginning with Firefox 132 (Mozilla Support).
Safari or Edge
Use a current version as a comparison test. Their permission labels and Meet behavior may differ from Chrome, so a successful test indicates a browser-specific problem rather than proving one browser is universally better.

Update software and isolate the cause
Install available macOS, browser and presentation-app updates, then restart the Mac. Do not assume a particular Chrome version is universally required; Google’s version-specific Chrome guidance concerns testing a newer recording experience, not ordinary Meet screen sharing (Google Meet guidance).
Testing the same meeting in another current browser helps separate a macOS-wide permission problem from a browser, extension or stale-profile problem. If every browser fails, focus on macOS permissions, host restrictions, managed-device policies, displays and adapters.
Before your next meeting
- The host has allowed participant presenting.
- The browser running Meet is enabled in macOS screen and system-audio recording privacy settings.
- The browser was fully restarted after any permission change.
- The intended tab, window or display is open and not minimized.
- You selected tab sharing for browser audio.
- Your Mac is running macOS 14.2 or newer for window or desktop audio.
- External docks, displays, extensions and competing capture apps have been ruled out if sharing is unstable.
- Your organization’s IT team has approved any managed-device changes.
When to use an alternative
For a Google Slides deck, Meet’s Slides presentation workflow can avoid some application-window problems. If permissions are locked and the meeting is urgent, use another approved meeting platform only with the organizer’s permission; that is a temporary operational workaround, not a repair for Google Meet.
