The right Hulu alternative depends on what you want to replace. For a broad live-TV bundle, compare YouTube TV and DIRECTV; for more customizable packages or a short viewing window, consider Sling. If you mainly watch on-demand shows and films, compare services by the specific titles and features you need rather than paying for a live-TV bundle.
First decide what you need to replace
Hulu + Live TV combines live channels with access to Hulu’s streaming library. Hulu advertises more than 100 live channels, including sports, news, and entertainment, and says live and video-on-demand content through the Live TV plan includes ads. Its unlimited DVR applies to live recordings, which are retained for up to nine months; it does not apply to on-demand shows. Hulu’s Live TV page also notes that downloads are available for select titles on supported devices, so offline access is not universal.

- Replacing live TV: Compare local broadcast stations, sports and news channels, DVR, simultaneous streams, and the full price after any introductory offer.
- Replacing only on-demand viewing: Identify the shows and films you actually watch, then check which services currently carry them, their ad tiers, download rules, and total monthly cost. A standalone streaming subscription does not automatically include live channels, live sports, or DVR.
Before comparing plans, make a short list of must-have channels and programs. Local station and regional sports availability can depend on your ZIP code, and a national channel list is not a guarantee that every channel is offered in your area.

When YouTube TV is worth comparing
YouTube TV’s main plan is the closest broad-bundle candidate in this comparison: its official page lists 100+ channels for $82.99 per month, unlimited DVR, up to six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams. The same page lists a Sports Plan with 30+ channels for $64.99 per month. Those are listed plan prices on the page accessed October 4, 2026, not a promise that either plan will remain available at that price.
Do not assume a nationwide channel list matches your home. YouTube TV says local channel lineups depend on the area. Check availability using your ZIP code, especially if local news, network programming, or a regional sports channel is a must-have. YouTube TV also reports local network coverage in over 98% of U.S. TV households and availability in over 99.5% of households; those figures are the company’s claims, not independent measurements.

For devices, YouTube TV lists select Amazon Fire TV devices, Roku players and TVs, Apple TV, Vizio, Samsung and LG TVs, HiSense TVs, and Xbox One. Compatibility depends on the specific device and service. A separate streaming player is only necessary if your existing TV or device cannot run the service you choose.

When Sling may suit a shorter or more tailored need
Sling emphasizes customizable plans and short passes. Its comparison page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists 1-, 3-, and 7-day passes starting at $4.99, alongside on-demand movies and shows and free streaming content. These are Sling’s own product claims and may change; check what each pass includes and whether the channels you need are available in your location.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Sling is worth investigating if you do not want a broad monthly bundle or only need service for a limited period. Compare the actual channel package—not just the pass or base price—with your must-have local stations, sports, and news channels. Add any fees or add-ons before comparing the total with another service.
When to look at DIRECTV streaming
DIRECTV describes streaming packages billed month to month, Signature packages, Genre Packs, and a five-day free trial on its comparison page. DIRECTV calls its Choice package the closest match to Hulu + Live TV and claims a wider selection of regional sports networks. Those are DIRECTV’s own comparisons, not an independent finding that Choice is the best match for every viewer.

Check your local lineup and the exact package that carries your regional sports network before subscribing. Confirm the current package price, trial conditions, and any fees, because availability and offers can vary.
How to choose without paying for the wrong bundle
- Check your ZIP-code lineup. List the local broadcast stations and sports networks you will not give up, then confirm their availability with each service.
- Match the plan to your viewing. Compare a broad live-TV plan with a sports-focused plan or customizable package only after checking the channels each includes.
- Calculate the ongoing cost. Compare the regular monthly price plus necessary add-ons and fees. Treat introductory discounts and trials as temporary, and read their eligibility and end dates.
- Compare the experience you use. Check DVR rules, simultaneous streams, ad-supported programming, and whether the on-demand titles you watch are included.
- Confirm device compatibility. Check the service’s supported-device list against a TV, streaming player, game console, or other device you already own before buying hardware.
If you only want on-demand shows and films
A live-TV bundle may be more than you need if you do not watch local channels, live sports, news, or recorded broadcasts. There is no single on-demand substitute established here as the best value: the right choice depends on current catalog availability, plan pricing, ads, profiles, and download terms for the titles you care about. Search for those titles in each service’s current catalog and compare the plan that actually includes them before subscribing.
