Hue, Saturation, and Brightness: What Each Color Control Means

Hue selects the color family, saturation adjusts colorfulness, and brightness changes lightness or darkness in an HSB picker. Their values are model-specific.

Hue identifies a color family, saturation describes how colorful a color appears relative to its brightness, and brightness in an HSB picker controls how light or dark it appears. Together, hue, saturation, and brightness (HSB) offer a practical way to select and adjust colors—but their values are not universal measurements that can be compared across every color system.

What do hue, saturation, and brightness mean?

These three terms describe different aspects of how a color is perceived or represented in a color picker. The Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) defines hue and saturation as attributes of visual perception; brightness is commonly used as a control in HSB software interfaces.

Control What it answers Practical meaning in an HSB picker
Hue Which color family? Choose a position around a color wheel, such as red, yellow, green, or blue.
Saturation How colorful relative to its brightness? Move between a neutral gray and a more vivid version of the selected hue.
Brightness How light or dark? Adjust the selected color toward black or white, according to the software’s HSB convention.

What is hue?

Hue is the perceived color family: red, yellow, green, blue, or a mixture of neighboring families. CIE describes it as an attribute of perception that places colors around a closed ring. In Adobe’s HSB interface explanation, hue is selected on a color wheel and represented as an angle from 0° to 360°.

A hue angle is meaningful within that interface’s convention; it is not a brightness or saturation value. If saturation is zero, the displayed color is achromatic (gray), so a stored hue number cannot be seen in the color itself.

What is saturation?

Saturation describes colorfulness in relation to brightness. In an HSB picker, the control is often presented as a move from gray or muted color toward a vivid version of the chosen hue. Adobe’s documented HSB scale runs from 0% (gray) to 100% (fully saturated); that is a software convention, not a universal physical percentage.

Saturation is not simply the amount of pigment in a paint mixture or a fixed measure of how much gray has been added. CIE notes that perceived color depends on viewing conditions, and its definition relates saturation to brightness. A slider is useful for editing, but it simplifies a more context-dependent visual attribute.

What is brightness in HSB?

In Adobe’s HSB guidance, brightness means relative lightness or darkness, with the interface running from black at 0% to white at 100%. This describes the HSB picker’s control, rather than a universal scale shared by all color systems.

Brightness should also not be confused with the technical idea that a display produces a color using red, green, and blue light channels. HSB is a way to describe and select a color; RGB represents colors through red, green, and blue components.

Does increasing brightness make a color more saturated?

Not as a general rule. Brightness and saturation are separate controls in an HSB picker: changing brightness adjusts the light-or-dark appearance, while changing saturation adjusts colorfulness relative to brightness. The resulting appearance can still depend on the color, display, surroundings, and viewing conditions, so a brighter color is not automatically a more saturated one.

How to use the three controls together

  1. Choose hue to select the color family you want.
  2. Adjust saturation to make that hue more vivid or more neutral.
  3. Adjust brightness to set how light or dark the color appears in the picker.

A color wheel can help make hue relationships easier to see, but it is an optional learning aid, not a requirement for using a color picker.

Why HSB values do not describe every color system

HSB is a practical interface model, not the same coordinate system as every formal color specification. For example, ISO/CIE 11664-5:2024 describes calculations in CIE L*u*v* and includes correlates for lightness, chroma, saturation, and hue. Those coordinates and an HSB picker’s controls should not be treated as interchangeable without an appropriate conversion and context.

Perceived color also depends on the stimulus and viewing conditions—including its spectral distribution, size, shape, structure, surroundings, the observer’s visual adaptation, and prior experience. For everyday editing, HSB gives an accessible set of controls. For precise technical comparisons, identify the color model and relevant viewing conditions.
