Huawei’s smartphone emphasis is official; the newest launch claims are not
Huawei’s 2025 annual report says its Consumer Business Group continued to strengthen its presence in smartphones. The report names the Pura X widescreen foldable and Mate 80 Series as part of its portfolio. These are company-reported strategy and product details, not a market-share target or evidence of a particular sales outcome. Huawei’s 2025 annual report also quotes Chairman Liang Hua saying, “Our overall performance was in line with forecast”; that broad corporate comment is not specifically about smartphone or EV performance.

A ChinaTechNews report dated October 8, 2026, said Huawei planned a Mate 90 launch on October 1, 2026, and referred to a “LogicFolding” chip. Those details were not corroborated by an official Huawei announcement in the available sources, so they should be treated as that outlet’s reporting rather than confirmed Huawei product specifications. The same report described plans to expand HarmonyOS overseas in the next one to three years; that timeline likewise was not confirmed in an official announcement. ChinaTechNews’s October 8 report is the source for these claims.
What Huawei’s HarmonyOS figures do—and do not—show
Huawei’s annual report gives a picture of the ecosystem the company is building around its devices. By the end of 2025, Huawei reported more than 36 million devices running HarmonyOS 5 and HarmonyOS 6, more than 10 million registered developers, and over 350,000 apps and services in AppGallery. These are Huawei-reported figures; they do not establish that every listed app or service is available in every country, or that overseas versions of Huawei phones have the same software and services as models sold in mainland China.

The report also says Huawei spent CNY192.3 billion on research and development in 2025, equal to 21.8% of company revenue, and employed 114,000 people in R&D at year-end—about 53.7% of its workforce. Those company-wide figures indicate the scale of Huawei’s stated investment in technology, but they do not isolate spending on phones, HarmonyOS, or AITO.
Seres is taking control of AITO; Huawei retains a technology role
The EV relationship needs a separate distinction from Huawei’s phone strategy. A September 2026 report by Yicai, hosted by the Shanghai Stock Exchange, says Seres would take full control of the AITO brand. Huawei would continue to provide technology support and enable the ecosystem, according to the report. That arrangement does not make Seres’s vehicle handovers a measure of Huawei’s own EV sales. The same report gives Seres handover figures: 20,652 EVs in August 2026, 50% fewer than a year earlier, and 201,902 in the first eight months of 2026, down 14% year over year. These are reported Seres deliveries, not Huawei-wide sales. They support describing a downturn in Seres’s deliveries over those periods, but do not by themselves establish a broad decline across the entire EV market.
