HTTP 429 for 111 Days? What the Error Actually Tells You

HTTP 429 means too many requests over a period, but the standard sets no universal scope or expiry. Check response headers, traffic, and provider account rules to diagnose an error that persists.

A 429 response means the server considers requests too frequent over a period of time. But HTTP standards set no universal limit scope, counting method, or expiry date—so a 429 that persists for 111 days is not proof of a permanent rate limit, nor proof that the problem is something else. Check the response details, request activity, and the service’s account rules to identify what is being limited.

What HTTP 429 means—and what it leaves open

RFC 6585 defines 429 Too Many Requests as a response indicating that a client has sent too many requests in a given amount of time. The server may include a Retry-After header, but the standard does not require one. The RFC also leaves the server free to decide how it identifies a client and counts requests. RFC 6585, published in April 2012, does not set a universal expiration time for a limit.

That flexibility matters: a limit might apply to one resource, a whole server, or multiple servers. A service might associate requests with an IP address, a user, credentials, or another identifier. Consequently, the same 429 can have different causes and scopes on different services. MDN’s 429 reference also notes that implementations vary.

What a 111-day 429 does—and does not—tell you

The elapsed time is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis. HTTP defines no 111-day cutoff after which a 429 ceases to be a rate limit. A continuing error could reflect requests that are still being made, a limit shared across users or workers, or a provider-specific account or policy constraint. The response alone cannot establish which explanation applies.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Start with the exact response and the service’s own documentation. In particular, distinguish a temporary request or token rate limit from an exhausted credit balance or a usage cap if the provider reports those separately. Those distinctions are provider-specific, not part of the general meaning of HTTP 429.

How to investigate a persistent 429

  1. Record the response. Save the status, response body, relevant headers—especially Retry-After—and the timestamp with its timezone. Keep any request ID, endpoint, and details of the request. OpenAI’s support guidance recommends providing the exact error, code, request ID, time, and relevant account limit when seeking help. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance is specific to its services.
  2. Check whether traffic is still reaching the service. Look for automated retries, scheduled jobs, multiple workers, or applications sharing credentials or an IP address. Because the server chooses how to count requests and identify clients, activity from another worker may matter even if you have stopped making requests from one device.
  3. Follow a valid retry instruction. RFC 9110 defines Retry-After as either an HTTP date or a non-negative number of seconds. RFC 9110, published in June 2022, specifies this syntax. If the value is valid, wait at least that long before retrying. It tells you when to try again, not the complete reason for the limit or its scope.
  4. If there is no usable retry instruction, avoid rapid retries. For temporary rate-limit errors, OpenAI recommends bounded exponential backoff with jitter; repeated unsuccessful requests can contribute to per-minute limits. This is provider guidance, not a universal guarantee that a persistent 429 will clear. Do not leave an unbounded retry loop running.
  5. Read the provider’s error details and account context. For the OpenAI API, its guidance distinguishes request or token rate limits from credit balance and usage limits, and points users to check the organization or project used by the request. Apply those checks to OpenAI specifically; other services may define different categories and remedies.
  6. Escalate with useful evidence. If requests have stopped and the account state does not explain the error, consult the service’s current documentation or support channel. Include the captured response and request details so the provider can investigate the limit it applied.

Use the clues to narrow the cause

What to examine What it may clarify
Resource, endpoint, and shared traffic Whether the limit appears tied to one resource, a server, or requests associated with shared users, credentials, or an IP. RFC 6585 permits different scopes and identification methods.
Retry-After and response body Whether the server supplied a time or delay before retrying, and whether the body provides further service-specific information. The header’s syntax is defined by RFC 9110.
Provider error code and account state Whether that provider identifies a rate, credit, or usage constraint. OpenAI documents these as distinct API issues; do not assume every provider uses the same categories.
Service-specific rate-limit rules How a particular service applies and handles its limits. For example, Cloudflare documents its own 429 behavior; those rules do not establish how another provider works. Cloudflare’s 429 guidance is specific to Cloudflare.

What not to assume

  • There is no standards-based rule that a 429 must clear after a fixed number of days.
  • A long-lasting 429 does not, by itself, prove that the service has permanently blocked you or that changing networks will fix the problem.
  • An example delay in a standard is illustrative, not evidence of a typical wait. RFC 6585’s Retry-After: 3600 example does not establish that one hour is a normal rate-limit period.
