An HTTP 200 response means the request received a success status; it does not prove the page or API returned useful, correct application data. In Uptime Kuma, combine an appropriate status-code check with a keyword assertion for text or a JSON query for structured responses to catch some failures that status alone misses.
Why can a site return 200 but still not work?
HTTP status describes the response at the protocol level, not whether the application fulfilled its purpose. A server, reverse proxy, or application route might return a success status while delivering a login page instead of the expected API response, a maintenance page, stale or incomplete data, or an error message inside an otherwise successful response. These are examples of the general failure pattern, not reports of a particular Uptime Kuma incident.

A monitor that checks only status can therefore report success while the response fails the application’s contract. The right additional check depends on what the endpoint is supposed to return.
What should an Uptime Kuma monitor assert?
Monitor the route whose behavior matters, rather than a generic home page if that page does not exercise the function you need to watch. Then combine a status condition with a content or data assertion.

- Accepted status codes: Set the range appropriate to the endpoint. Uptime Kuma’s official internal API example stores accepted codes as
200-299; that is an example, not a recommendation for every service or route. The API documentation also warns that it is internal, primarily intended for Uptime Kuma’s own use, and may change without notice: Uptime Kuma internal API documentation. - Text or HTML response: Use a distinctive, stable phrase that appears on a successful response. Avoid text that could also appear on an error, login, or maintenance page.
- JSON response: Use the
Json Query Expressioncontrol to check a field and value that signal useful application behavior, rather than merely confirming that the response is syntactically JSON.
The English interface includes Keyword and Json Query Expression checks. Its localization text describes a successful keyword check and JSON query as distinct monitor concepts, but does not establish a version-by-version feature matrix or a verified click path. Neither check proves every user journey. A probe covers only the route, location, credentials, assertions, and schedule configured for it. For broader assurance, consider separate checks for critical workflows and dependencies; that is an operational design choice, not a product guarantee.

How do JSON failures affect retries?
Check the retry setting before interpreting alerts. Uptime Kuma’s English interface says: “If the status code check passes but the JSON query fails, the monitor will be marked as down immediately without retries.” This describes the behavior when the Only retry if status code check fails option is enabled. A content assertion may therefore change monitor state differently from a failed status-code check under that setting. The wording is documented in the English interface strings.

Availability and latency are separate signals. Uptime Kuma heartbeat examples include a status, message, and ping or response-time value. Its Prometheus integration documents the monitor_status and monitor_response_time metrics, allowing an existing metrics setup to track both: Uptime Kuma Prometheus integration.

Prometheus is relevant if you already use it to consume metrics; the documentation does not establish that every deployment exposes the endpoint identically or publicly. Treat response time as a separate signal from whether the configured assertions pass.

Not necessarily. Uptime Kuma’s status-page documentation says results are cached for five minutes and the page refreshes every five minutes; it also notes that updates are less responsive than the dashboard. A public status page is useful for external communication, but it is not a live diagnostic console. See the Uptime Kuma status-page documentation.
