The tool behind this claim appears to be htop-win, a free, open-source Windows process monitor modeled on the Unix-like htop. It offers a terminal-first way to inspect processes, system activity and selected hardware metrics. Its project documents useful differences from Task Manager, but the available sources do not establish that it is objectively faster or better overall.
What htop-win is—and who may prefer it
htop-win is an interactive process monitor for Windows, written in Rust. Instead of Task Manager’s conventional graphical layout, it presents system and process information in a terminal-style interface that can be navigated with a keyboard and also supports mouse interaction. That can suit people who prefer keyboard-driven tools or want a compact, information-dense view; it is a workflow preference, not proof of superior performance.

The project documents configurable colors and columns, persistent settings, selectable meter display modes and an adjustable refresh rate. These are features described by the project, not independently tested results. See the htop-win project and documentation.

#1 Best Overall
- Full version, permanent License of Avid Pro Tools. Includes 1-Year of software updates and upgrades.
- Compose, record, edit, and mix high-quality music or sound for picture-on a Mac or PC-using Avid Pro Tools, the industry-standard audio production platform.
- Avid Pro Tools comes packed with over 60 amazing virtual instruments, effects, and sound processing plug-ins, so you can sound your best. Get the sounds of natural sounding spaces and classic stompbox effects.
- Software can be activated and used with iLok Cloud. iLok Key not included and not required.
- CPU usage by core, memory and swap usage, system uptime, and process and thread counts.
- Network and disk I/O rates, plus battery status.
- GPU monitoring and, on supported hardware, NPU metrics.
Hardware-dependent meters appear only when the project says supported hardware is detected. The project says GPU monitoring uses the D3DKMT statistics interface, which it describes as the same source used by Task Manager. It documents system-wide GPU utilization and per-process GPU and GPU-memory columns. NPU metrics are conditional on supported Copilot+ / AI PC hardware; their availability should not be assumed on every Windows PC.
Process inspection and controls
The project lists these process-focused capabilities:

- ONGOING PROTECTION Download instantly & install protection for 3 PCs, Macs, iOS or Android devices in minutes!
- TOP-PERFORMING VPN Faster speeds, more server locations, and greater connection control to protect your privacy across all your devices, including Smart TVs.
- ADVANCED SCAM PROTECTION Help spot hidden scams online. With the built-in Genie AI assistant, you’ll never wonder if a message or email is suspicious again.
- REAL-TIME PROTECTION Advanced security protects against existing and emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses, and it won’t slow down your device performance.
- DARK WEB MONITORING Identity thieves can buy or sell your information on websites and forums. We search the dark web and notify you should your information be found.
- Sortable columns, configurable process columns and a separate I/O tab.
- A parent-and-child process tree, live search and filtering, and the ability to tag multiple processes.
- Process termination, priority control and CPU-affinity controls.
- Windows-specific details such as Efficiency Mode, elevation status, process architecture and service accounts, as well as detection of modified or deleted executable files.
These functions make htop-win a candidate when you want process details such as per-process I/O or a keyboard-oriented way to work with process lists. Changing priority or CPU affinity can affect how an application runs, so use those controls only when you understand the setting you are changing.

Microsoft describes Task Manager as a built-in system monitor and startup manager. It shows running applications and CPU, memory, disk and network use; it can also end unresponsive programs, manage startup applications and monitor active user sessions. It already covers common performance checks without an additional download. See Microsoft’s overview of system configuration tools in Windows.

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
The feature distinctions below come from htop-win’s own comparison, not an independent audit of either application:
| Task | htop-win, according to its project | Task Manager, according to the project comparison and Microsoft |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal and keyboard operation | Project lists terminal and keyboard operation. | Not listed as an htop-win comparison strength; Task Manager is Microsoft’s built-in graphical tool. |
| GPU and NPU monitoring | Project lists GPU and conditional NPU monitoring. | Project comparison identifies GPU/NPU monitoring as an htop-win distinction; Microsoft’s cited overview lists CPU, memory, disk and network visibility. |
| Per-process I/O | Project lists a separate I/O tab and identifies per-process I/O as a distinction. | Project comparison identifies this as an htop-win distinction. |
| Custom columns and color themes | Project lists both. | Project comparison identifies these as htop-win distinctions. |
| Tree view, process search, CPU affinity and Efficiency Mode | Project comparison marks these available. | Project comparison also marks these available. |
For ordinary graphical checks, Task Manager may be more convenient because it is already part of Windows. htop-win’s appeal is the terminal-style workflow and the particular metrics or columns its project documents. Neither tool is the right substitute for every kind of process troubleshooting: if you need to identify which handles or DLLs a process has open or loaded, Microsoft’s separate Process Explorer can show those details and search for processes using a particular handle or DLL.

Windows support and per-user installation
The project documents support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, with separate release executables for x64 and ARM64. Its source-build requirement is Rust 1.85 or later. Check the project’s release page for the relevant build and its current installation and verification instructions.
The documented per-user install command is:
winget install faratech.htop-win
The project says this installs htop.exe in the user’s WindowsApps directory and adds it to PATH without requiring administrator privileges or UAC elevation. Follow the project’s current release and installation documentation for exact steps, since commands and release details can change.

Download verification, license and limits of the “beats” claim
The htop-win repository says its release binaries are signed with Azure Trusted Signing and verified with GitHub artifact attestation. It provides a GitHub CLI command for verifying a downloaded binary; consult the repository’s verification instructions and use them for the release you download. Those statements apply to the project’s releases, not to executables from arbitrary download mirrors. The project identifies its license as MIT; the repository’s license file contains the operative terms.
The project also describes its release binary as approximately 930 KB, but that is a project-reported size, not an independent measurement of speed or resource use. The reviewed sources provide no neutral benchmark, reliability comparison or evidence that htop-win is universally superior to Task Manager. “Beats” is therefore best understood as an opinion about features and workflow, not a demonstrated overall win.
Quick Recap
Should you try it?
- Consider htop-win if you want a terminal-based process monitor, prefer keyboard operation, or value the project-documented process tree, per-process I/O and configurable columns.
- Stay with Task Manager if its built-in graphical views meet your needs for common CPU, memory, disk and network checks, startup management or ending an unresponsive application.
- Use Process Explorer for handles or DLLs when that specific troubleshooting question matters; it is a separate Microsoft utility, not a feature of htop-win.
