HTMLHint vs. html-validate: Which HTML Linter Fits Your Project?

HTMLHint offers configurable hints and a documented VS Code extension; html-validate offers named presets for standards, accessibility, and document checks. Choose by testing the rules and workflow your templates need.

Choose HTMLHint if you want to tune individual rules through a familiar .htmlhintrc workflow or use its documented VS Code extension. Choose html-validate if you prefer named presets for standards, accessibility, and full-document checks. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on the rules your templates need, how your team configures tools, and what your development environment supports.

How the two HTML linters differ

Both are developer tools that analyze HTML files locally; neither is a hosted validation service. Their main difference is how they help a team define its checking policy: HTMLHint centers on configurable hints, while html-validate offers presets that group related checks.

Decision area HTMLHint html-validate
Configuration .htmlhintrc, CLI rule options, custom rule directories, and inline controls let teams select and tune hints. HTMLHint getting started and rule reference. JSON or JavaScript configuration, named presets, and configurable rule severities and options provide a preset-oriented starting point. Getting started and rule reference.
Scope of checks Its rule list includes tag pairing, obsolete tags, unique IDs, document metadata, image alternatives, and form-label checks. HTMLHint rule reference. Its reference groups checks across syntax, content models, security, SEO, style, and document concerns. Named presets include recommended, standard, a11y, and document. html-validate rule reference.
Standards and accessibility Review the enabled rules against your own standards and accessibility policy; an individual-rule catalog is not the same as a standards-validation preset. HTMLHint rule reference. The standard preset is described as validating against the WHATWG HTML Living Standard. The a11y preset enables accessibility-related rules and is recommended with other validation presets for broader coverage. This is not a guarantee of complete WCAG conformance. html-validate rule reference.
Editor and automation The CLI documents ignore patterns, output formats, and custom rule directories. A Microsoft VS Code extension reports findings in open HTML files. CLI usage and VS Code extension. The guide documents project configuration and a CLI. A complete editor or CI integration comparison is not established by the cited setup material. Getting started.
Runtime requirement The official setup guide specifies Node.js 22 or later. Check that requirement against the package release and environment you plan to adopt. Getting started. The cited setup guide demonstrates npm installation but does not state a comparable minimum Node.js version. Verify compatibility for the version you intend to install. Getting started.

Which tool fits your project?

Choose HTMLHint for explicit rule control

HTMLHint is a practical starting point if your team already uses .htmlhintrc, wants to enable or tune specific hints, or needs custom rules. Its documented VS Code extension is another concrete reason to consider it if that is your team’s editor. Inspect the actual active configuration rather than assuming every useful rule is enabled by default. Setup guide, rule reference, and VS Code extension.

Choose html-validate for a preset-based policy

html-validate is a natural starting point if you want a named baseline that distinguishes standards checks, accessibility rules, and document-level validation. Its standard, a11y, and document presets make those categories explicit. For teams using Prettier, its html-validate:prettier preset disables style rules that conflict with the formatter; the documentation recommends combining it with other presets rather than treating it as validation coverage on its own. Check whether templates are fragments or full documents

If your project lints component fragments or partial templates, pay particular attention to document-level rules. html-validate separates those into a document preset, so the configured scope should match the files being checked. For HTMLHint, inspect the selected rules and test them against representative fragments; the documented materials do not establish a direct rule-by-rule equivalence with html-validate. html-validate rule reference and HTMLHint rule reference.

How to install and run each tool

HTMLHint

  1. Confirm the project uses Node.js 22 or later, as specified in the HTMLHint setup guide. Getting started.
  2. Install HTMLHint as a development dependency using npm or yarn, then create a starter configuration with htmlhint --init.
  3. Run it against project files with npx htmlhint; configure the rules and CLI options for your repository’s needs. Getting started.

html-validate

  1. Install it as a development dependency with npm install --save-dev html-validate.
  2. Configure the project to extend html-validate:recommended, then add or adjust presets and rule options to match the intended checks.
  3. Run it against a file with npm exec html-validate yourfile.html. Getting started.

Accessibility, Prettier, and integration trade-offs

Accessibility checks

html-validate makes accessibility-oriented configuration easy to identify through its a11y preset, and describes its recommended preset as including WCAG-related rules. That helps establish a visible starting policy, but it does not prove complete WCAG conformance or establish that html-validate is superior to a carefully configured alternative. Compare the actual enabled rules with your project’s requirements. html-validate rule reference.

Prettier

html-validate documents a Prettier preset to avoid conflicting style checks. HTMLHint can be configured to align its rules with formatter behavior, but the cited documentation does not establish an official Prettier-specific preset for it. html-validate rule reference and HTMLHint rule reference.

Editor and CI workflow

HTMLHint documents a VS Code extension and CLI options for ignore patterns and output formats. For html-validate, the cited setup guide establishes CLI use and project configuration, not a complete editor or CI integration matrix. Check support in your actual editor and verify that either tool’s output works with your CI reporting and failure policy before standardizing. Are HTMLHint and html-validate interchangeable?

They overlap in the kinds of HTML concerns they check, but their documented rule catalogs and configuration models differ. No rule-by-rule equivalence table or comparative accuracy study is established by the cited references. Treat a switch as a change to your team’s rule policy, not as a guaranteed drop-in replacement: run the candidate tool on representative templates, compare findings, and confirm that the rules you rely on are covered. A practical way to make the choice

  1. List the checks your project needs, such as unique IDs, image alternatives, form labels, standards validation, or document completeness.
  2. Choose a configuration model: individually selected hints with HTMLHint, or named presets and rule options with html-validate.
  3. Run each candidate on representative full pages and fragments. Review false positives and confirm that findings match your team’s intended policy; this is a selection method, not a claim of comparative testing.
  4. Check runtime compatibility, editor support, CLI output, and CI behavior in the environments where the team will use the linter.
  5. Record the rules and presets you enable so the lint policy is reviewable and repeatable.

The official documentation describes setup, rules, and configuration, but does not establish head-to-head speed, accuracy, maintenance burden, adoption, or a complete integration comparison. Base the decision on required coverage and a trial against your own templates rather than an assumed universal ranking.
