To capture a transparent screenshot with HTML/CSS to Image (HCTI), set transparent_background to true and request PNG output. The setting works for both HTML/CSS renders and screenshots of a URL; JPG and WebP render with a white background for this feature. See HCTI’s transparent-background parameter reference.
Set a transparent background in an HCTI request
Use the transparent_background parameter on the create-image request. Provide either HTML to render or a URL to capture; HCTI’s API accepts one of those inputs, while CSS is optional. The transparency setting applies to either render path.

Use PNG and check the result
Transparency depends on the output format as well as the setting. HCTI states that JPG and WebP render with a white background for this feature, so use PNG when the image needs transparent pixels. If the result has a white canvas, first verify that the request sets transparent_background to true and that the output is PNG.
Use the CSS method for an existing workflow
HCTI also documents a legacy CSS approach. Pass body { background-color: transparent; } using the request’s css parameter. Its FAQ specifically directs users to the API parameter rather than relying on a <style> tag in the HTML. For new requests, the dedicated transparency parameter is the simpler documented choice; retain CSS when maintaining an existing CSS-based request.

Troubleshoot white or partly opaque areas
- The whole image has a white background: Confirm the output is PNG and that
transparent_backgroundis set totrue. If using the legacy method, check that the CSS is supplied through the API’scssparameter. - Only some areas are opaque: Inspect child elements and overlapping elements for their own background colors. Making the page background transparent does not remove backgrounds painted by those elements.
- The CSS fallback has no effect: Send the rule through the request’s
cssparameter instead of embedding it in a<style>tag.
Capture the full scrollable page separately
If the screenshot needs the entire page rather than only the visible viewport, HCTI’s FAQ documents full_screen: true for full-page capture. This is separate from transparency: use the transparency setting and PNG output for the background, and the full-screen option when the capture should include the scrollable page.
