Choose Html2Pdf.app if you want a hosted conversion API to accept a URL or HTML and return a PDF; choose Playwright if you want to run and control the browser yourself as part of an existing automation workflow. Neither option is established as universally faster, more accurate, or cheaper: the available official documentation does not provide a matched comparison. Validate both against representative pages, especially if they rely on JavaScript, custom fonts, or precise page breaks.
How the two approaches differ
| Decision | Html2Pdf.app | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | A hosted conversion service; send an authenticated request to its API. | A browser automation library; call the page’s PDF method in a browser you run or operate through your deployment. |
| Input and result | Accepts a public webpage URL or raw HTML and returns PDF bytes for a successful synchronous request. | Generates a PDF buffer from an automated browser page. |
| Document controls | Documented options include CSS media mode, format, margins, orientation, scale, headers and footers, and an asynchronous callback workflow. | Documented options include page formats and dimensions, margins, page ranges, print backgrounds, and scale. PDF generation uses print CSS media by default. |
| Infrastructure to own | The vendor operates the conversion service; you still own integration, credentials, error handling, and document validation. | Your deployment must provide and operate the browser execution environment and surrounding automation. |
| Comparable cost or quality | The official documentation reviewed does not establish a like-for-like total-cost calculation or cross-product rendering benchmark. Compare your actual workload and operating requirements. | |
When Html2Pdf.app is the better fit
Consider Html2Pdf.app when your application needs a hosted endpoint rather than a browser automation setup, and the vendor’s URL/HTML input and documented layout controls fit your documents. Its documented endpoint is POST https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate; send a JSON body and an X-API-Key header. On a successful synchronous request, the response is PDF data. See the Html2Pdf.app documentation for the current request schema and supported options.

Node.js: synchronous request
Keep the API key on a server or trusted job, not in browser JavaScript, a client-side template, or a public repository. This example saves the binary response and fails visibly on an unsuccessful HTTP status. Confirm the exact request fields against the vendor documentation before adapting it to production.
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
async function generatePdf() {
const response = await fetch('https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate', {
method: 'POST',
headers: {
'Content-Type': 'application/json',
'X-API-Key': process.env.HTML2PDF_API_KEY
},
body: JSON.stringify({ url: 'https://example.com' })
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`PDF request failed: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
}
await fs.writeFile('page.pdf', Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer()));
}
generatePdf().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
The url value represents the public-URL input described by the service. For raw HTML, use the documented html field and the current schema. Do not assume that a URL requiring your own login or private network access will be reachable by a hosted converter; verify access requirements with the service and avoid sending sensitive content unless your data-handling review permits it.
#1 Best Overall
Asynchronous generation
For background work, Html2Pdf.app documents a callBackUrl workflow. The callback includes a base64-encoded document and may echo a supplied state; the documentation says callback delivery may be retried up to three times. Design the receiver to tolerate repeated delivery, validate that the callback corresponds to a job you initiated, and decode the document only after validation. Consult the current vendor docs for the precise payload and authentication/verification details rather than assuming a callback is proof of authenticity.
Data handling
Html2Pdf.app says generated PDFs are processed temporarily rather than permanently stored, while selected request metadata and a source URL may be retained in logs. Treat that as the vendor’s stated handling, not a substitute for your own privacy, contractual, or compliance review.
When Playwright is the better fit
Playwright is a natural fit when PDF creation belongs inside an existing browser automation flow—for example, when the same run must navigate, interact with a page, and then save its rendered output. Its Page.pdf() method returns a PDF buffer. The example below uses Playwright’s documented API shape in Node.js; install Playwright and its supported browser before running it. See the Playwright Page.pdf() API reference for current options and setup instructions.

Node.js: create a PDF from a page
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const pdf = await page.pdf({
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' }
});
await fs.writeFile('page.pdf', pdf);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
networkidle is only a navigation wait condition; it is not proof that every application has finished rendering its document. If the page exposes a reliable ready marker, wait for that selector or application-specific condition before generating the PDF.
Print media versus screen media
Playwright’s API reference says page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS media by default. If the document should reflect screen styles instead, explicitly switch media before generating the PDF:
await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' });
const pdf = await page.pdf({ printBackground: true });
Use print media when the page’s print stylesheet defines the intended document layout. Use screen media only when you deliberately want screen styling; compare page breaks, colors, and content visibility for the pages that matter.

Options to evaluate
- Page size: choose a format or set dimensions to match the intended paper or output size.
- Margins and page ranges: set margins deliberately and restrict output to required page ranges when appropriate.
- Print backgrounds: enable
printBackgroundwhen background colors or images are part of the design. - CSS page sizing: consider
preferCSSPageSizewhen the page’s CSS declares its own paper size. - Scale: adjust scaling carefully; changes can affect line wrapping and pagination.
Html2Pdf.app documents overlapping controls—media mode, format, margins, orientation, scale, and headers/footers—but similar option names do not establish identical rendering behavior. Check each tool’s current API reference and compare actual output.

- Map the workflow. If a hosted URL/HTML conversion call meets the need, evaluate Html2Pdf.app. If PDF capture is one step in browser interactions you already automate, evaluate Playwright.
- List required controls. Write down media mode, paper size, orientation, margins, page ranges, backgrounds, headers/footers, and any page-specific interactions. Confirm each required control in the respective API documentation.
- Test representative documents. Include short and long pages, dynamic content, custom fonts, large images, and pages with important page-break requirements. Html2Pdf.app specifically cautions that media selection, available fonts and resources, and JavaScript timing can affect the result.
- Compare operational ownership. Include integration and credential management for the service, or browser installation, execution, monitoring, and maintenance for Playwright. The sources do not provide a universal simplicity or cost verdict.
- Review data exposure. Determine whether sending a URL or HTML to a hosted service is acceptable, and review the vendor’s documented retention and your applicable requirements.
- Measure your own workload. Record successful output, failures, rendering time, and infrastructure or service charges under the same pages and conditions. No matched performance test is established by the cited official references.
Costs and reliability considerations
Html2Pdf.app’s product page displays a free plan and paid plans with usage limits; those commercial terms can change, so check the live Html2Pdf.app plans page before estimating or purchasing. A hosted plan price is not directly comparable to Playwright’s total cost: a Playwright deployment also has browser runtime, infrastructure, and operational costs, which depend on your environment. The reviewed Playwright API reference does not provide an equivalent managed-service price.
Do not infer that either option guarantees fidelity or a particular processing time for your pages. Rendering depends on the document and its resources, and the available official material does not provide a controlled cross-product test. Test failure handling and output validation with your own pages before relying on either path for business-critical documents.

Troubleshooting common PDF problems
The service request fails
- Check that the request uses
POST, the documented endpoint, a validX-API-Key, and a JSON body matching the current schema. - Read the HTTP status and response body on failure instead of saving an error response with a
.pdfextension. - Keep credentials server-side and verify that the input URL is publicly reachable by the hosted service.
The PDF is blank, incomplete, or missing dynamic content
- Check whether the page needs additional time for JavaScript, fonts, images, or other resources to load.
- For Playwright, wait for a meaningful application-ready selector or condition when network idle is insufficient.
- For Html2Pdf.app, review its documented timing and media controls and test the same representative page again.
Styles or pagination differ from the browser view
- Check whether the PDF uses print or screen media; Playwright defaults to print media.
- Review print-specific CSS, declared page size, margins, scaling, and background printing.
- Confirm fonts and image resources are available to the renderer; test page breaks on long content.
Callback processing runs more than once
Html2Pdf.app documents that callback delivery may be retried up to three times. Make callback handling idempotent: associate it with a known job/state, prevent duplicate downstream processing, and follow the vendor’s documented payload validation approach.
