The dependable way to convert HTML to PNG is to render the markup in a real Chrome or Chromium browser, then capture the rendered pixels. That approach handles modern CSS, web fonts, SVG, JavaScript charts, and responsive layouts far better than treating HTML as plain text. For a quick one-off, use an online converter. For repeated jobs, choose an HTML-to-image API or run a browser automation tool.
Choose the right conversion method
| Method | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Online browser converter | A single image without coding | Input limits, quotas and vendor privacy policies vary |
| Hosted HTML-to-image API | Applications, templates and repeatable jobs | Your markup or URL is sent to a third-party service |
| Headless Chrome or Chromium | Private infrastructure and maximum control | You maintain browser binaries, fonts, timeouts and scaling |
| Client-side html2canvas | A page already open in the visitor’s browser | Cross-origin assets and browser rendering limits can affect fidelity |
Fastest option: use an online converter
Paste your HTML and CSS into a browser-based converter, set the viewport dimensions, choose PNG, and download the result. This is appropriate for a mock-up, social card or one-off documentation image.
Settings that matter
- Width and height: Use the dimensions your destination expects. A responsive page can reflow when the viewport changes.
- Content-fitted or full-page sizing: Content fitting captures the whole rendered document; fixed sizing captures only the chosen viewport.
- Device scale factor or DPI: A higher scale produces sharper text but a larger file.
- Transparent background: Enable it only when the page and downstream format support transparency.
- Wait time: Delay capture until fonts, images, charts and asynchronous data have loaded.
- Selector capture: Capture one card or component instead of the entire page when the converter supports a CSS selector.
Ironfang documents PNG, JPG and WebP output, content-fitted or fixed sizing, transparent backgrounds and a 256 KB input limit. DynaPictures describes a no-account converter with viewport and pixel-density controls and a 20-render-per-day allowance on the retrieved page. Limits and allowances can change, so confirm them in the current interface before relying on a workflow.
Convert raw HTML with an API
Use an HTML endpoint when your application owns the markup. The request normally includes the HTML, an API key and rendering options such as width, height, format, full-page mode, delay or a selector to wait for. html2img documents POST /api/html, API-key authentication, dimensions up to 5,000 pixels, full-page capture, DPI, wait_for_selector, delay and webhooks. Its documentation also says the HTML and screenshot endpoints can return PDF through a format parameter.

Hosted APIs are useful for invoices, certificates, Open Graph cards and user-generated templates because the same rendering rules can run in a queue or background job. HTML/CSS to Image documents reusable templates, PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF output, plus signed image URLs for browser use without exposing a secret key. ScreenshotAPI documents raw markup rendered in Chromium, inline CSS and JavaScript execution, PNG/JPG/WebP/PDF output, thumbnails and retina rendering. html2png.dev documents raw HTML POST bodies, hosted output URLs, width and height, delay, zoom, selector, transparency and device-scale controls.
Raw HTML versus a public URL
- Send raw HTML when the source is generated by your application or contains private data that should not be hosted publicly.
- Send a public URL when the page already exists and you want its normal browser rendering, navigation, styles and scripts.
External images, stylesheets and fonts should use absolute HTTPS URLs or data URIs when a remote renderer cannot resolve relative paths. Confirm that the service permits the assets and that your origin allows them to load.
Do it yourself in the browser
A browser-backed workflow is the fidelity baseline for complex HTML. Chrome and Chromium implement CSS grid, flexbox, custom properties, web fonts, SVG and JavaScript as a normal visitor’s browser does.
Client-side capture with html2canvas
When the page is already open in a user’s browser, a client-side library such as html2canvas can rasterize a selected element. The page and its assets must be accessible to the browser; cross-origin images without appropriate permission may be omitted.

const element = document.querySelector('#receipt');
html2canvas(element, {
backgroundColor: null,
scale: window.devicePixelRatio,
useCORS: true
}).then(canvas => {
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.download = 'receipt.png';
link.href = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
link.click();
});
This method captures what the library can reconstruct from the DOM; it is not identical to a browser’s native screenshot for every CSS feature. Use server-side Chromium when exact layout, web-font timing, JavaScript charts or full-page output matters.
Headless Chromium workflow
- Launch a pinned Chromium version in your server or CI environment.
- Set the viewport width, height and device scale factor.
- Navigate to the URL or load the HTML.
- Wait for a specific selector, network idle, fonts and any application data.
- Capture an element or the full page as PNG.
- Close the browser and record failures, timing and output size.
Pinning the browser and fonts reduces visual drift between deployments. Give pages a bounded timeout; an endlessly loading tracker or third-party request should not hold a job forever.
PNG output decisions
- PNG: lossless, supports transparency and is suitable for text, diagrams and UI screenshots.
- JPG: smaller for photographic content, but lossy and unsuitable for transparent backgrounds.
- WebP: often smaller than PNG or JPG when your consumers support it.
- PDF: better for printing and multipage documents than a single raster image.
The WHATWG HTML Standard identifies image/png as a serialized image type and describes PNG fallback when a requested image type is unsupported. The renderer, not the file extension alone, determines the visual result.
Production checklist
- Use deterministic HTML and include all required CSS.
- Load fonts before capture; otherwise fallback metrics can change line breaks.
- Wait for lazy-loaded images and JavaScript charts.
- Set an explicit viewport and device scale factor.
- Use full-page mode only when a tall image is acceptable.
- Hide cookie banners, chat launchers and transient animations when they are not part of the design.
- Restrict outbound requests and protect secrets in custom headers or cookies.
- Store the renderer version, options and page URL with each generated asset.
Troubleshooting HTML-to-PNG conversion
The image is blank
The page may still be loading, may require authentication, or may have failed JavaScript initialization. Wait for a meaningful selector, verify the URL from the rendering environment, and capture browser logs. For raw HTML, ensure the document has visible content and valid CSS.

Fonts or icons are wrong
Use absolute HTTPS font URLs or embed the font as a data URI, wait for document.fonts.ready, and verify that the renderer can reach the font host. A missing font changes wrapping and element heights.
Images are missing
Check relative URLs, HTTPS certificates, CORS policy and lazy-loading behavior. Scroll or trigger the page’s lazy-load mechanism before capture, or use a renderer that explicitly supports full-page lazy-image loading.
The screenshot is cut off
Use full-page capture or increase the viewport height. For one component, capture its selector and ensure its height is settled after content loads.
JavaScript content is incomplete
A fixed delay can help, but waiting for a selector or network-idle condition is more reliable. Avoid waiting forever on analytics or streaming requests; block nonessential resources when your tool supports request filtering.

Privacy, reliability and cost
For hosted conversion, review the provider’s current privacy policy, retention terms, geographic processing and quotas before sending confidential markup. Keep API keys server-side and use signed URLs or short-lived jobs for public embeds. For reliability, log the requested URL, viewport, wait condition, renderer result and billing status. Cache deterministic pages, but choose a TTL that matches how quickly your content changes. A self-hosted browser avoids sending data to a vendor but shifts maintenance, patching and scaling to your team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a private HTML file with a URL-only screenshot API?
Usually not unless the file is temporarily reachable by the renderer. Send raw HTML to an HTML endpoint or render it inside your own browser process instead.
Why does my PNG look different from the live page?
Differences usually come from viewport size, missing fonts, unfinished JavaScript, blocked assets, device scale or animations captured at another moment.
Should I use full-page capture for a long document?
Use it when one tall raster image is required. Choose PDF or multiple sections when the document must be printed, shared or edited.
