Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android all capture the visible frame without extra hardware. Use a selected-area capture when you want to exclude browser tabs, notifications or other clutter.
The quickest method
- Open the YouTube video and seek to the exact moment you need.
- Pause playback. Use the frame-step controls or move the playhead slightly if the image is blurry.
- Wait briefly for the play/pause bar and other overlays to fade.
- Run your device’s screenshot command.
- Crop or annotate the result, then save or share it.
A screenshot records what is rendered on your display. It does not export the original video frame, so the result cannot be sharper than the paused image shown at your current player size and quality setting.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture only the video
- Pause the video at the desired frame.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool image overlay appears.
- Choose the rectangular snip mode and drag around the video image.
- Select the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Edit, copy, share or save the image from Snipping Tool.
This shortcut is for a still image. Do not confuse it with Windows + Shift + R, which opens video recording.
Capture the entire screen
Press PrtSc to copy a full-screen snapshot to the clipboard, then paste it into an image editor such as Paint and save it. A full-screen capture includes browser chrome, taskbars and notifications, so the rectangular Snipping Tool mode is usually cleaner.

Windows troubleshooting
- The overlay does not appear: open Start, search for Snipping Tool and launch it directly. Install pending Windows updates if the app is missing or fails to open.
- The image is black or frozen: click the browser window, pause again and retry. Hardware-accelerated video or protected content can restrict what a window allows the operating system to capture.
- The capture is in the wrong folder: check Snipping Tool’s save location or paste the clipboard image into an editor and save it manually.
Mac
- Pause the video on the target frame.
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open macOS Screenshot controls.
- Choose a full-screen capture or the selected-area option, then drag around the player.
- Click Options if you need to change the save location, timer or whether the pointer is shown.
- Capture, then open the thumbnail preview to crop or mark up the image.
You can also use Shift + Command + 4 for a selected-area capture or Shift + Command + 3 for the whole screen. macOS normally saves captures to the desktop unless you choose another destination. Apple notes that some apps may restrict screenshots of their windows; if a capture is blocked, try the browser’s visible player area rather than an application window protected by policy.
iPhone
- Pause the video and hide the player controls.
- Use the standard screenshot button combination for your iPhone model.
- Tap the thumbnail preview to crop, draw or share, or let it disappear to save automatically.
- Find the image in Photos, usually under the Screenshots album.
The button combination varies by hardware generation, so use Apple’s current iPhone screenshot instructions for your model instead of relying on a single universal shortcut. If the video rotates to landscape, hold the phone in the orientation that gives the largest clean player area before capturing.
iPhone troubleshooting
- Controls are visible: pause, tap an empty part of the screen and wait for the overlay to fade before pressing the buttons.
- Nothing is saved: check Photos permissions and available storage, then retry using the physical buttons rather than an unreliable on-screen gesture.
- The frame looks soft: set YouTube to the highest quality that your connection and display support, enlarge the player, seek a nearby frame and capture again.
Android phones and tablets
- Pause the YouTube video at the required moment.
- Use your device’s supported screenshot button combination or system screenshot action.
- Open the preview to crop or annotate, or wait for it to save automatically.
- Look in the Screenshots folder in Google Photos or your device’s gallery app.
Android screenshot steps vary with the handset maker, Android version and navigation settings. Google’s Android Help provides general instructions; if those do not work, consult the support page for your phone brand. Some devices also offer a Quick Settings screenshot tile, a gesture or a stylus command.

Android troubleshooting
- The button combination conflicts with another action: try the Quick Settings screenshot tile or the manufacturer’s documented gesture.
- The gallery cannot find it: search Photos for “Screenshots” and check that the device has not redirected captures to a custom folder.
- A protected screen is reported: the app or content may prohibit capture. You cannot reliably bypass an operating-system restriction with the ordinary screenshot tool.
Get a cleaner, sharper result
Remove overlays before capture
Playback controls, subtitles, recommendation cards and notification banners become part of the image. Pause, tap away from the controls and wait. Turn subtitles off if you do not need them, and close unrelated notifications before starting.

Expand the YouTube player or enter full-screen mode, then capture only the video rectangle. A larger displayed frame contains more pixels than a small embedded player. If you need surrounding context, capture the full browser window separately rather than shrinking the video.
Choose a good frame
Fast movement can leave motion blur even when playback is paused. Move a fraction of a second forward or backward and try again. Screenshots preserve the display’s aspect ratio and color handling; they do not recover detail that was never rendered.
Edit after capture
Crop browser tabs and status bars, straighten or annotate the image, and export in a format appropriate for your use. Keep an uncropped original if you may need to prove where the image came from.

What YouTube does—and does not—provide
YouTube’s official thumbnail-management guidance is for creators selecting or uploading a video thumbnail. It is not a general-purpose frame-export command for arbitrary videos. For an ordinary viewer, pausing and using the operating system’s screenshot function is the documented, practical route.

Taking a screenshot for private reference is different from publishing it, selling it or incorporating it into another work. YouTube explains that creators generally own copyright in original videos and identifies permission, Creative Commons terms, public-domain material and applicable copyright exceptions as possible routes for reuse. Exceptions differ by country or region.
Credit alone does not grant permission, and no screenshot is automatically fair use. Before publishing, check the creator’s permission or license and the copyright rules where you live. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I screenshot a YouTube video while it is playing?
You can, but pausing first gives you control over the exact frame and avoids motion blur.
Why is my screenshot lower quality than the video?
The screenshot contains the pixels displayed by your screen and player size. Enlarge the player and choose a higher YouTube quality before capturing.
Can I remove the YouTube logo afterward?
You may crop or edit an image for your own lawful use, but removing branding does not change copyright or permission requirements.
