To turn HTML into useful Markdown comparisons, handle the work in three separate stages: select the page content, convert it with fixed settings, then split and compare the result at stable structural boundaries. A diff can show that text changed; it cannot tell you whether the change matters to readers.
Build the pipeline in three stages
- Select: isolate the main content from navigation, cookie notices, timestamps, and other page chrome. Extraction rules are site-specific, so validate selectors against saved page samples.
- Convert: use a converter with deliberate, consistent options for headings, lists, tables, code, links, images, and whitespace.
- Chunk and compare: split the Markdown at repeatable structural boundaries, match corresponding chunks, and inspect their diffs in context.
Keep the original HTML and the conversion settings with each snapshot when auditability matters. That makes it possible to distinguish a source-page edit from a change caused by extraction, conversion, or configuration.

Choose and configure an HTML-to-Markdown converter
markdownify
markdownify’s documentation shows conversion from HTML strings and BeautifulSoup objects, with options for tag handling, heading styles, lists, line breaks, wrapping, code languages, tables, escaping, and parser configuration. When an option is not enough, its documented approach allows a custom MarkdownConverter subclass with per-tag conversion methods.

For a basic pipeline, install the package and pass the selected HTML to its markdownify function. The package page reports a release dated June 30, 2026; that is a release record, not evidence that a particular version is best for every project. Pin the version in a production workflow and compare representative outputs before upgrading.

html-to-markdown
The html-to-markdown API reference documents conversion to Markdown, Djot, or plain text. Its ConversionResult can include metadata, document structure, table data, inline images, and warnings when the relevant options are enabled. The reference displayed API version 3.17.1. Consider this option when structured results or conversion metadata fit the pipeline; compare its output on your own inputs rather than assuming one library is universally superior.
What to compare when choosing
- Output control: how each library handles tags, headings, lists, tables, images, code, links, escaping, and whitespace.
- Integration: whether your pipeline already has a BeautifulSoup tree, needs structured metadata, or requires custom per-tag handling.
- Stability: whether unchanged saved input produces the same Markdown with your pinned version and options. This needs to be checked on your target pages; the documentation does not promise universal stability for all inputs.
Normalize and split Markdown into stable chunks
Normalize conservatively. Remove only elements known to be volatile, and make consistent decisions about whitespace, generated dates, and URLs. Aggressive cleanup can erase a real edit; inconsistent cleanup can create apparent changes that are only formatting noise.

Prefer structural boundaries
Split at headings or other meaningful block boundaries where possible, and retain the heading path or another source identifier with each chunk. If a document has no useful structure, define a deterministic fallback based on paragraphs or sentences. There is no generally established best chunk size: choose boundaries that suit how the chunks will be reviewed or consumed.

When available, use a stable key such as canonical URL plus heading path to pair chunks across versions. Comparing only by position can make every later section appear changed after one section is inserted. For collections, record added and removed keys separately, and diff only chunks present in both versions.
Compare versions with Python’s difflib
Python’s 3.14 difflib documentation describes several useful presentations:
unified_diffproduces a compact, familiar patch.context_diffincludes surrounding context.ndiffgives line-level comparison hints, including within-line differences.HtmlDiffcreates a side-by-side HTML comparison.
Choose the display that helps a reviewer inspect the change. For a large snapshot collection, first compare maps of stable chunk keys, then render a diff for each modified matching chunk. Store the fetch time, source URL, converter name and version, and conversion options alongside each snapshot so a later output shift can be traced.

A textual diff is a review signal, not a verdict. Changes can come from edited wording, but also from altered markup, conversion settings, dynamic page content, or whitespace. Check the source HTML and chunk identity when a diff looks surprising, and verify that both versions used the same extraction and conversion configuration before treating it as a content change.
