To control the size and density of a Puppeteer screenshot, call page.setViewport() with explicit width, height, and deviceScaleFactor before navigating, then capture with page.screenshot(). For example, a 640 × 480 CSS-pixel viewport with a device scale factor of 2 is a practical starting point for a sharper capture. The scale factor is a browser setting; check the saved image’s actual pixel dimensions in your own setup rather than assuming a universal output-size formula.
Render HTML as an image with a controlled viewport
This complete example opens a page, sets its viewport before navigation, waits for the page to load, and writes a PNG screenshot. It uses Puppeteer’s documented page and screenshot APIs; it is an illustrative pattern, not a claim of having been run or tested.

Choose a viewport or emulate a device
Use a custom viewport for fixed render dimensions
Set width and height explicitly when a screenshot should use consistent layout dimensions across runs. Add deviceScaleFactor when you want to configure the browser’s device-pixel ratio for rendering. This gives you control over the viewport and scale without tying the capture to a named phone or tablet.

Use a device profile for a known device
page.emulate(device) applies both a device user agent and a viewport. Use it before navigation when you want the page to respond as it would to that device profile. For a custom size, set the viewport directly rather than assuming a device profile is necessary. See Page.emulate().
Understand viewport defaults and output dimensions
Puppeteer’s ConnectOptions documentation specifies an 800 × 600 default viewport when one is not configured. page.viewport() reports the viewport recorded by the last setViewport() call or the connection default; it does not inspect the browser’s actual viewport. See ConnectOptions and Page.viewport().

The screen-configuration guide describes screen information such as devicePixelRatio and says a headless screen defaults to 800 × 600 unless configured through the documented screen or window-size switches. Screen configuration should not be treated as a guarantee of screenshot raster dimensions. The documentation does not establish one universal output-dimension formula across screenshot options, so inspect the generated file if exact pixel dimensions are a requirement. page.screenshot() returns binary data by default and saves to a file when you provide path. PNG is the default image type. Use the option that matches the intended output:

For a normal viewport screenshot, defaults may be sufficient. Puppeteer also documents element screenshots; by default, it attempts to scroll an element into view if it is hidden. Consult ScreenshotOptions, Page.screenshot(), and the screenshots guide for the available options.
Troubleshoot unexpected captures
- The layout has the wrong breakpoints: Set the viewport before navigation, then capture after the page has loaded.
- The capture does not match a device: A custom viewport changes dimensions, but does not by itself apply a device user agent. Use
page.emulate(device)before navigation for a documented device profile. - The image dimensions are not what you expected: Do not infer output raster size from viewport dimensions alone. Check the saved image’s dimensions in your environment.
- Changing mobile or touch settings reloads the page: This behavior is noted in the
setViewport()documentation; configure those settings before navigation where possible. - A transparent PNG is still opaque: Set
omitBackground: trueand verify the page itself does not paint an opaque background. - The screenshot is cropped to the visible area: Use
fullPage: truefor the document orclipfor a deliberately defined region.

No. It configures the device scale factor; set the CSS viewport dimensions separately with width and height.
