An HTML form cannot send an email by itself. It collects named fields and submits them to a receiver; a hosted form service or your own server-side endpoint must process the submission and send or trigger an email. For a static site, a hosted handler is usually the simpler route. If you need custom validation or integrations, use a server-side endpoint you control.
What happens when someone submits an HTML form?
The browser sends the form’s named values to the URL in its action attribute using the chosen method. The receiving service or server-side code then handles those values and can notify you by email. Adding an email address to HTML does not create that receiver, and a form element alone does not send mail.

There are two practical routes: use a hosted form handler, or post to an endpoint on your own site and have its server-side code handle delivery. The first avoids running your own form backend; the second provides more control but requires you to operate and secure the endpoint and its email delivery.

Hosted form handler
Choose this route if your site is static or you do not want to maintain a backend. Create a form with a provider, use the endpoint it assigns in the form’s action, and submit with method="POST". Give every field you want delivered a name. The provider receives submissions and offers its own settings for managing them and configuring notifications. Formspree documents an HTML form route that does not require you to write server code: Formspree HTML forms.

Server-side endpoint you control
Choose a custom endpoint when you need project-specific validation, routing, storage, or integrations. The browser posts values to your route or serverless function; that code validates and handles the submission, then uses an email delivery mechanism. Keep SMTP credentials and secret API keys on the server, never in browser HTML or JavaScript. The exact implementation depends on your framework and email provider.
Set up a Netlify form and email notification
For a site deployed on Netlify, form detection lets Netlify recognize forms in the deployed HTML and handle submissions. Follow the current Netlify Forms setup instructions:

- In your site’s Forms settings, enable form detection.
- Add
data-netlify="true"or thenetlifyattribute to the form, and give it a unique form name. - Give each submitted control a
nameattribute. Deploy the site so Netlify can parse the form. - In Forms, open Submission notifications and configure a notification to the inbox where you want submissions delivered. See Netlify form notifications.
If you add a field named email, Netlify can use the visitor’s address as the notification’s reply-to value. The notification itself is sent from Netlify, so replying to it does not automatically send a message to the visitor; it lets you reply using your email client’s reply function.

Netlify also documents AJAX submissions. The form still needs the Netlify attribute. If JavaScript creates the form and there is no hidden form-name field, include the form name in the request body. File uploads require the provider’s specific upload instructions; do not assume an ordinary URL-encoded example handles files correctly. See the Netlify setup guide.

Make submissions safer and more reliable
- Validate on the receiver. Browser-side checks improve the visitor’s experience, but submitted values must also be checked by the receiving service or server-side code.
- Plan for spam. Public forms can attract unwanted submissions. Netlify documents spam filtering and optional reCAPTCHA in its spam-filter guidance.
- Use email fields carefully. A visitor-provided email address can be useful as a reply-to value, but it does not prove the visitor’s identity.
- Limit personal information. Collect only what the form needs. Netlify recommends regularly exporting and deleting submissions containing personally identifiable information (PII), and taking extra care to protect PII in file uploads. It also sanitizes submitted code. These are platform-specific practices, not a general compliance determination; consult its submission documentation.
- Decide how files will be handled. Review the provider’s storage and access behavior before accepting uploads. A notification email is not a substitute for a deliberate policy for uploaded data.

Before choosing a hosted service, check that it supports your hosting setup and review how it handles notifications, spam, submissions, retention, and uploads. Pricing and account limits vary, so confirm current terms with the provider rather than relying on a general figure.
