HTML gives a web page its structure and meaning: it marks content as a heading, paragraph, link, list, image, or another kind of element. Think of it as the foundations and walls of a house. CSS is more like paint and finishes, while JavaScript adds mechanisms that respond to actions. The house comparison is a beginner-friendly analogy, not a literal description of how browsers work.
What is HTML?
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is markup used to organize the content of web pages. A browser reads an HTML document and uses its structure when presenting the page.

HTML does not, by itself, define a page’s complete visual design or interactive behavior. Its main job is to identify what the content is and how its parts relate. See MDN’s basic HTML syntax guide.
How does the house analogy explain HTML?
Imagine a house. HTML is like the foundations and walls: it gives the rooms and their contents a structure. CSS is like paint and finishes, shaping how those rooms look. JavaScript is like mechanisms that let parts respond when someone acts, such as opening a door.

The analogy helps distinguish the jobs, but a web page is not literally built like a house. Browsers process HTML, CSS, and JavaScript according to web standards; the comparison is only an entry point to the concepts. MDN also uses this house comparison in its explanation of the web standards model.
What do HTML tags do?
Tags are the written markers used to form HTML elements. The element is the meaningful part of the document; the tag is the notation used to write it. For example, <p> is an opening tag and </p> is a closing tag.
Rank #2
Many elements wrap content between an opening and closing tag. Some elements, including images, are void elements: they do not wrap text and do not use a closing tag. HTML tag names are case-insensitive, though lowercase is the usual style.
A small HTML example
<h1>Welcome</h1>
<p>This is my first page.</p>
<a href="https://example.com">Visit a site</a>
<h1>marks “Welcome” as a top-level heading.<p>marks the sentence as a paragraph.<a>creates a link; itshrefattribute specifies the destination.
The tag names tell the browser—and technologies that interpret the document—what role each piece of content has. MDN’s HTML elements reference describes the available elements and their roles.

How is HTML different from CSS and JavaScript?
| Technology | Main job | House analogy |
|---|---|---|
| HTML | Structures and labels page content. | Foundations and walls. |
| CSS | Controls visual presentation. | Paint and finishes. |
| JavaScript | Adds behavior and interaction. | Mechanisms that respond to actions. |
These technologies complement one another. A heading’s role belongs in HTML; choices about its color or spacing belong in CSS; a response to a user action can be handled with JavaScript.

HTML is maintained as a Living Standard, rather than as a sequence of frozen editions with a single current version number. “HTML5” is often used informally as a broad label for modern HTML-related web technology. It can also refer to a historical milestone, but it is misleading to treat HTML5 as a separate current edition. The WHATWG HTML Standard is the current standard; its search result reported a last update of 6 October 2026.
